Over the holiday weekend, Yahoo Sports’ Tim Brown Tweeted the Yankees and Andruw Jones were closing in on a one-year deal. One thing is all but official: Marcus Thames will not be back in the Bronx. Thames agreed to terms with the Dodgers, where he’ll likely participate in a left-field platoon.
Last week I compared Jones with another veteran outfielder, Johnny Damon. Though Damon would be the sentimental choice to return to the Yankees, Jones offers the ability to play all three outfield positions – even if he’s no longer Gold Glove caliber – and right-handed pop off the bench, something the Yankees need especially with Thames relocating west.
The Yankees are expected to formally announce the signing of Rafael Soriano sometime today.
UPDATE 12:30 p.m. Jon Heyman Tweets a couple of notes: Soriano is having his physical today and the Yankees hope to announce the deal tomorrow. And talks between Jones and the Yankees look promising.
