On this date in 1999, George Steinbrenner and Yogi Berra met face-to-face for the first time in 14 years. The Hall of Fame catcher had vowed not to step foot in Yankee Stadium after he was unceremoniously fired 16 games into the 1985 season, barely more than a season into his second stint as Yankees manager. The reunion was made possible by the efforts of Suzyn Waldman, currently the Yankees’ radio analyst, and Yogi’s son, Dale. At the 2:35 mark of the below clip of Waldman and John Sterling remembering Steinbrenner on the day of his death, Waldman tells the story on how she brokered the reconciliation between the two sides, which Michael Kay called “one of the great moments in Yankees history.” Working for WFAN in 1999, Waldman was assigned to cover the opening ...

When you first arrive to the Yankees’ Spring Training complex in Tampa, Fla., you see a life-size statue of George M. Steinbrenner, the team’s principal owner for 37 years. Long before Mr. Steinbrenner passed away one year ago today at the age of 80 the respect and admiration for him was clear in both Tampa and New York City. What opened as Legends Field in 1996 was renamed George M. Steinbrenner Field 12 years later. The location? One Steinbrenner Drive off the Dale Mabry Highway. If you enter the new Yankee Stadium – coined by many as “The House that George Built” – through Gate 2 you’ll see a replica of the statue. Inside Monument Park is an honor to the Boss that dwarfs even the storied five large red granite blocks that pay tribute to Babe ...

Aris Sakellaridis is a veteran sports photographer who has devoted a chunk of his time helping Yankees senior advisor Ray Negron promote the team's community endeavors and sharing some exclusive stories. His work from Tampa, Fla., has included the new generation of Hank's Yanks, the Baby Bombers' training regimen and Russell Martin's early influence. Aris recently reported an epilogue of George Steinbrenner's quiet benevolence: the story of Robert Vliet, wayward in Tampa before a chance meeting with the Boss changed his life. Below he documents a visit to children at St. Joseph Hospital in Tampa, Fla., by a group of "Baby Bombers" led by Slade Heathcott, the Yankees' first-round pick in the 2009 draft. ****

I’ve had the privilege of attending the annual awards dinner put together by the New York Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. The 88th edition will take place Saturday, January 22 at the Hilton New York (1335 Avenue of the Americas between West 53rd and 54 Streets). This is a fantastic event and this year’s agenda is no different. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. with the dinner to follow at 7. Among many baseball dignitaries scheduled to attend, former Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams, nominated for a Latin Grammy for his latest album, “Moving Forward,” will be on hand to perform live with members of his band.

The Expansion Era committee decided not to induct the late George Steinbrenner into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Former Yankees Ron Guidry, Tommy John and Billy Martin also didn't make the cut, while former Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Marvin Miller, who fell one vote shy, continued to be denied entry. Our Jack Curry Tweeted some feedback from the vote that saw former Yankees scouting director Pat Gillick get in. As for the Boss, the next time he'll be eligible will be in 2013.

The first annual Boss' Cup, in tribute to the late George Steinbrenner, was played Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Joe Auriemma was there to shoot video and informed me that Hank's Yanks defeated Team Mariano, 3-2. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Ricky Negron led off with a base hit, and Hank's Yanks scored three runs and held on for the margin of victory. The rally began against starting pitcher Mariano Rivera Jr., who silenced Hank's Yanks' offense until Negron's hit ended his day.
