John Wooden passed away late Friday nigt at the age of 99. His place as one of the most revered coaches in all of sports is long secure and spot in immortality permanent.

Wooden led the Bruins to 10 NCAA championships -- including winning seven in a row -- during a 27-year run. His teams won 88 consecutive games from 1971-74 and 38 consecutive NCAA tournament games from 1964-74, both records that still stand today.

"He has been, and always will be, the guiding light for our family," Wooden's children, Jim Wooden and Nancy Muehlhausen, said in a statement. "The love, guidance and support he has given us will never be forgotten. Our peace of mind at this time is knowing that he has gone to be with our mother, whom he has continued to love and cherish."

Hofstra University dropped its football program this morning. I can’t say I’m surprised. Attendance was always an issue, especially after the school expanded the seating capacity of Hofstra Stadium (now James M. Shuart Stadium) from 7,000 to 13,000 in 1996. There was little buzz – people talked about Hofstra football only when Wayne Chrebet and others became stars in the National Football League – and the program treaded water since Shuart – a former Hofstra player – left his presidential post in 2001.
