A cool story from Aris Sakellaridis about a release party for a new book on Yogi Berra:

****

The Chase Suite Hotel was the place to be on Friday where the “Wish You Were Here Productions” party took place.  Andrew Levy and Tim O’Neill’s annual bash honored the upcoming book release of “Driving Mr. Berra.” The book is a collaboration of stories from the legendary Yogi Berra and “Louisiana Lightning” Ron Guidry. Former Yankees Goose Gossage, Oscar Gamble, Roy White, Bucky Dent and Mickey Rivers, along with current coaches Tony Pena, Mark Harkey, and Mick Kelleher were among the celebrators.

Berra was surprised by a personal opera performance from former Yankees farmhand Adam Unger, who belted out a rendition of I’ Te Vurria Vasa

On this date in 1999, George Steinbrenner and Yogi Berra met face-to-face for the first time in 14 years. The Hall of Fame catcher had vowed not to step foot in Yankee Stadium after he was unceremoniously fired 16 games into the 1985 season, barely more than a season into his second stint as Yankees manager.

The reunion was made possible by the efforts of Suzyn Waldman, currently the Yankees’ radio analyst, and Yogi’s son, Dale. At the 2:35 mark of the below clip of Waldman and John Sterling remembering Steinbrenner on the day of his death, Waldman tells the story on how she brokered the reconciliation between the two sides, which Michael Kay called “one of the great moments in Yankees history.”

Working for WFAN in 1999, Waldman was assigned to cover the opening

Details are developing, but Newsday's Eric Boland Tweeted that Yankees legend Yogi Berra was taken to a local hospital in Clearwater, Fla., for precautionary reasons. Paramedics arrived shortly before 11:30 a.m. and loaded Berra on a private ambulance.

According to general manager Brian Cashman, Berra caught his sneaker on a carpet and fell, and did not want to go to the hospital. Manager Joe Girardi later said Yogi was smiling and joking afterward.

UPDATE 12:30 p.m. Here's the AP story. Berra fell on his backside and thankfully not his head.

UPDATE 4:15 p.m. Berra was discharged from the hospital at 4 p.m.

Happy 85th birthday to Yogi Berra, the greatest living Yankee and a true legend, icon and hero. A three-time American League MVP (1951, ’54-55) and 10-time World Series champion, Berra was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972. When he turned 18 he joined the Navy and participated in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach.

This AP photo is from July 18, 1999 on “Yogi Berra Day.” The special event began with a tribute to Berra and a first pitch from World Series perfect game pitcher Don Larsen. And what became proof that Yogi had stroke with the old Yankees Stadium ghosts, David Cone ended the afternoon with a perfecto against the Montreal Expos. (For trivia buffs, the Expos’ starter was a young sophomore right-hander named Javier Vazquez.)
