It was an afternoon in late July, and Mariano Rivera had stopped near the batting cage to speak with a reporter from a Latin sports outlet. The Yankee batters were beginning their practice and Rivera was headed toward the outfield with some of the other pitchers to catch fly balls. For Rivera, that has always been a pleasure; he has said that he would like someday to play center field, if only for an inning.

The reporter is a proper looking man of some years, thin, grey haired, with a neatly trimmed mustache.  Even in the midsummer heat, his attire is semiformal -- collared dress shirts and suspenders, when the younger members of the sports media will often wear golf shirts and khakis. Minutes after Friday night’s 4-3 Yankees victory over the Houston Astros, and Andy Pettitte’s 200th win as a Yankee, the press was gathered around his locker, waiting for him to emerge from the part of the clubhouse that is off limits to the media. His oldest son Josh, 15, was already at the center of the throng, standing with his back to the locker and the framed family photos always displayed there, also waiting, looking relaxed in his Andy Pettitte tee shirt and Yankee cap. The lefty’s younger son, Jared, had entered the clubhouse with his brother and scooted off somewhere away from the cameras and lights.

One of the reporters, mike in hand, joked with the teenager, pretending to mistake him for his dad. Hey, how did you feel about getting pulled in the eighth? What
