frown Why to teams have the complusion of giving an absorbment amount of money for mediocre pitching. Teams need to be more fiscally responsible. It is good for players, but not for fans whos tickets prices get jacked up every year.

watch for the dominoes to fall, this is just the beginning, i think ken rosenthal said that lilly is expected to get somewhere between 40-50 million and that is nuts

all these decent pitchers (#4's #5's) are going to get money that front of the line starters usually get

carpenter an ace in the NL is getting 5 yr 65 million and now we are going to see lilly or meche get 10 million a year

i am glad cash is staying out of this market

Ahh! Thanks for the translation. It is indeed exhorbitant -- what an outrageous haul for Padilla!!

Good for him, I guess. This is why I think Cashman is exactly right to focus on homegrown pitching. Really good pitching just isn't available on the open market, and what is available is grossly overpriced.

I love this, it's making me feel better and better about Carl Pavano's contract each day.

*big laugh*

I wouldn't go that far.

This is very similar to the late ninties. In 1998, the Yanks had the 3rd or 4th highest payroll. That payroll exploded once other teams gave outrageous contracts. The Dodgers with Kevin Brown, the Marlins with Gary Sheffield, the White Sox with Albert Belle, the Rangers with Alex Rodrigeuz, and the Red Sox with Manny Ramirez are perfect examples of this. In each case, the price for their own players went up. For example, the original offer to Bernie Williams was 7 - 9 million a year and thanks in large part to the Red Sox offering twice as much and the Marlins' contract to Sheffield, the Yankees had to pay a lot more. So their payroll went up significantly (the Yanks do bear responsibility as well, but that's another matter).

You can thank Omar for blowing up the market with that stupid contract to Kris Benson and now Lily wants 50 million, Zito wants over a 100 million, and Padilla gets 34 million.
