Update: Pioli Declines Giants GM Job

Scott Pioli, the New England Patriots VP of Player Personnel, has declined an opportunity to interview for the Giants' vacant GM job.

The Giants, as expected, officially requested to speak to Pioli yesterday afternoon and, according to a Giants official, permission was granted by the Patriots. But Pioli quickly sent word back that he was not interested in the Giants' job.

That was a bit of a shocker, considering Pioli is a native of Washingtonville, N.Y., which is about 60 miles north of Manhattan, and many believed he had coveted the Giants' job for a long, long time. A few people who knew him also thought he was eager to get out from under Bill Belichick's shadow.

Apparently they were all wrong.

That could push up the timetable of the Giants' GM search, especially since the Tennessee Titans are interested in Giants director of player personnel Jerry Reese, who is one of the leading candidates to replace outgoing Giants GM Ernie Accorsi. As of late this afternoon, the Titans had not asked the Giants for permission to speak to Reese, but they are expected to do so soon.

Since Tennessee is home for Reese, the Titans' job could be tempting. So if he truly is the Giants' choice, they might want to hire him soon.

The Giants have also interviewed three other in-house candidates -- VP of player evaluation Chris Mara, Assistant GM Kevin Abrams and Director of pro personnel Dave Gettleman -- and former Texans GM Charlie Casserly. Former Titans GM Floyd Reese is also said to be interested in the job, though he hasn't been interviewed yet.
