Bob Whitfield Announces Retirement After 15 Years in NFL

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ⁈“
Bob Whitfield enjoyed every
minute of his 15-year NFL career, including his final two seasons with
the Giants. In a perfect world, Whitfield might have played football
forever. But the NFL is a tough place to make a living for a
35-year-old offensive tackle. So Whitfield this week decided to retire.

⁈Å"It⁈⁚s time to hang it up and move on to the next thing,⁈ he said
today. ⁈Å"I can hang it up and be happy and move on. I had a great time -
I had a blast.⁈

Whitfield indicated whatever fleeting thoughts he held about
returning in 2007 were put to rest when he spoke with Coach Tom
Coughlin earlier this week.

⁈Å"In my conversation with coach, he indicated they were going to go
younger,⁈ Whitfield said. ⁈Å"So I⁈⁚m going to go ride ponies in the
sunset. I didn⁈⁚t want to wear out my welcome.

⁈Å"It⁈⁚s time to give other players the opportunity to come up in the
ranks. You have to move your older talent to make room for newer
talent. I recognize that. It was my thought after the season that I
would seriously consider retirement. So I⁈⁚m going to go ahead and move
on and give them an opportunity to let a Guy Whimper get some playing
time.⁈

Ironically, Whitfield is retiring when the Giants have an opening at
tackle; the team released starting left tackle Luke Petitgout on
Monday. Whitfield started nine games as an injury replacement in his
two seasons with the Giants. The team will perhaps look now at David
Diehl, who is entering his fifth season, and Whimper, a 2006
fourth-round draft choice who didn⁈⁚t play a down at tackle last season,
but who has exciting potential.

⁈Å"My steady joke with Guy last year was, ⁈
