Giants-Buccaneers scouting report

KICKOFF: Noon today

TV/RADIO: Channel 4; WHB (810 AM)

FAVORITE: Buccaneers by 3 (over/under 39 1/2 )

KEY INJURIES:Giants: Questionable ⁈” C Shaun O⁈⁚Hara (knee), LB Kawika Mitchell (knee), CB Sam Madison (abdominal strain); Buccaneers: Questionable ⁈” LB Cato June (foot).

Passing

EDGE >> BUCCANEERS The Giants⁈⁚ Eli Manning
is ranked 25th in the league in passing, and 11th among the 12 playoff
starters. He⁈⁚s without TE Jeremy Shockey, but Plaxico Burress is
coming on strong after battling ankle injuries. Bucs QB Jeff Garcia has
played fewer than six quarters of the last five games while resting or
recovering from a back injury and has thrown just 45 passes in that
time.

Rushing

EDGE >> GIANTS At 6-4 and 264 pounds, Giants
running back Brandon Jacobs is bigger than six of the team⁈⁚s
seven linebackers and two of its three tight ends ⁈” and
he⁈⁚s faster than all of them. He ran for more than 1,000 yards in
11 games for the Giants, who were fourth in the league in rushing. The
Bucs⁈⁚ leading rusher, Earnest Graham, was an undrafted free agent
in 2003 and spent parts of two years on the practice squad before
earning a role on special teams. He made his first career start in
mid-October after injuries to Carnell ⁈Å"Cadillac⁈ Williams
and Michael Pittman, and finished the regular season with 898 yards.

Defense

EDGE >> GIANTS The Bucs, playing in the
offensively challenged NFC South, have the NFL⁈⁚s top-ranked pass
defense, No. 2 total defense and No. 3 scoring defense, allowing just
17 points per game. But they are vulnerable to the run, ranking 17th.
The Giants led the NFL in sacks with 53 and were ranked seventh on
defense.

Intangibles

EDGE >> GIANTS The Bucs lost their last two
games to lowly San Francisco and Carolina when coach Jon Gruden shut it
down with the division clinched. The Giants, whose playoff berth was
locked in before the regular-season finale, gave their best effort of
the year in a 38-35 loss to unbeaten New England. We⁈⁚ll see whose
strategy pays off.

Face to face

BUCS QB JEFF GARCIA VS. GIANTS DE MICHAEL STRAHAN

Garcia
seems to have the Giants⁈⁚ number in the playoffs. He⁈⁚s 2-3
as a playoff quarterback, with both wins over the Giants. He beat them
in a first-round game on Jan. 5, 2003, with San Francisco when New York
coughed up a 38-14 third-quarter lead and lost 39-38. And he beat them
last year with Philadelphia, driving the Eagles to a game-winning field
goal as time expired. ⁈Å"You can see when he plays, he makes
everyone around him better,⁈ Giants defensive end Michael Strahan
said. ⁈Å"He⁈⁚s one of those guys, he⁈⁚s like a little kid
playing in the backyard. He just makes things happen and makes plays
out of improbable situations.⁈

Why the Giants will win

Coach Tom Coughlin saved his job with the performance against New England and won over the locker room with his approach.

Why Tampa Bay will win

Turnovers. Garcia has thrown just four interceptions this year; the
Bucs are an NFC-best plus-15 in turnover margin and scored 114 points
off turnovers. Manning threw 20 interceptions, tied for the most in the
NFL, and the Giants were minus-9. You do the math.

RANDY COVITZ⁈⁚S PICK: BUCCANEERS 16-13

Oh, look, it's 3rd and short, and the Giants' "great offensive line"...

FAILS TO GET IT DONE AGAINST A GOOD DEFENSE, AGAIN!

Why, I'm just shocked, and stunned by this development.

And I'm sure the loss of O'Hara didn't hurt that play, either. I'm so glad we played the starters the whole way to gain confidence, get the offense "hot", and oh, by the way, lose two starters, including the most important guy on the offensive line.

Two 3-and-outs already.
