James P. Dawson Award was named after the long time New York Times sportswriter who passed away in
1953.  James Dawson covered baseball and boxing for the New York Times Sports Page. The New York Yankees honored him by giving a Award in his name for the most outstanding Yankee rookie player in spring training camp. The Award  was started in 1956.  The1st James P. Dawson Award winner was OF Norm Siebren.

1956 James P. Dawson Winner Norm Siebern-LF (1957-1959)



Norm Siebren was the 1st Yankee regular position player for win the AL OF Golden Glove Award in 1958. He was traded to the Kansas City A's for OF Roger Maris in December 1959.

1957 James P. Dawson Award Winner OF/INF Tony Kubek (1957-1965)




 Tony receiving his 1957 American League  Rookie of the Year Award


Tony Kubek was named  1957 American League Rookie of Year Award Winner. Tony was
3-time American League All Star team member during his New York Yankees playing career.

I still remember that ball hitting him in the throat in that 7th game of the WS against the Pirates.

1958 Jame P. Dawson Award Winner  Catcher Johnny Blanchard




Catcher/OF1B  Johnny Blanchard (1955,1959-1965)


Johnny best  Yankees player season was in 1961. He hit 21 HRs with 54 RBIs in under 100 games. He hit 4 consecutive HRs 4 appearences in 3 games.

Outfielder Gordon Windhorn (1959)


Outfielder Gordon Windhorn came to the New York Yankees organization in a 1957 trade with the Boston Red Sox. He was sent to the Yankees AAA team, the Denver Bears. As a Yankee player, he wore uniform number 51. Gordy made it into 7 games in September  of 1959 with no batting average. After the 1959 American League season, Gordon was traded to the LA Dodgers for veteran  Pitcher Fred Kipp.
