I would. I know I sound like a broken record, but I would make that geat bat of montero into a RFer, so he gets over 600 ABs a year, and is not worn down form catching. Then i would focus on developing romine into the first catcher and cervelli as the back up.

Montero can flat out hit. With catchers it si a plus if they can hit, because they ae so important defensively. To take a budding awesome bat and make it into a catcher would in my eyes be crazy. If he cant catch great, then dont waste his bat trying to keep him there. I would rather have a below RFer, who can kill the ball for over 600 at bats, than a below average catcher, whos bat is restricted from limited at bats, and being worn down form catching.

Say this guy developes into a manny/pujos type, not claiming he will for sure, but if he did, do you think there would ever be a tram that would waste that bat as a catcher. That is why a guy like maurer will ens up at first base or somewhere else. You dont keep a guy that can hit .400 potentially in the catchers spot. Atleast in his case he is a solid catcher. If he was below average, it wouldnt even be a question, he would be in teh OF or 3rd base right now

I can agree with the logic, but I doubt it ever happens.

Montero should DH and backup catch like once a week. Eventually (like in 8 years) he can move to first. He will only be 26 when teix's contract runs out. I think he ends up at first base. But until then, he can DH and rake.

If Gary Sanchez is as advertised, he will be the every day catcher and Romine or Cevelli will be the backup. But that's all speculation at this point. In a year or two will have some very nice trade pieces, but Montero stays for sure. Beyond that who knows what happens.

All in all I wouldn't worry about Montero not getting AB's, he will get AB's. You find a spot in a lineup for a guy like that. At this point I would worry more about where he begins next season. I think a stint in the winter leagues is a great idea and then he starts at AAA in 2010. I keep that kid seeing AB's year round until he is ready to hit the bigs.

Good news is he is out with a broken finger. He can still work on agility and staying in shape over the next 6 weeks.

Among Cervelli, Montero, Romine, Sanchez, Higashioka, and Murphy, the Yankees have six potential big league catchers. Some are known more for their offense (ie Montero) and some are known more for their defense (ie Cervelli). Realistically, two of those guys will probably be catching on the Yankees by 2011, two of those guys will be playing other positions (whether it be outfield, 1B, 3B, or DH), and two of those guys will be trade bait for other positions of need (top-end starting pitching, SS, outfield, etc.)

Sanchez ...........Everyday Catcher
Cervelli..............Backup Catcher
Murphy..............OF (great athlete)
Romine..............trade bait
Higashioka........trade bait
