1938 New York Yankees: The Yankees sweep the Indians in a doubleheader, Monte Pearson throws 1st No-Hitter at Yankee Stadium.







August 27, 1938- In the 1st game of a twin bill at Yankee Stadium, New York Yankees CF Joe DiMaggio hits 3 consecutive triples. His offensive outburst helps the Bronx Bombers edge the Cleveland Indians by the score of 8-7. In the second game, Yankees starter Monte Pearson becomes the 1st pitcher to throw a no-hitter in Yankee Stadium.  Monte Facing only 27 Tribe batters, thanks to 2 Yankee double plays, beats his former team the Indians by the score of 13-0 for his 10th consecutive victory of the 1938 season. The Yankees playing their 6th successive doubleheader increase their American League lead to 12 games.

1978 New York Yankees: The Miracle Month for Catfish Hunter







August 28, 1978- The “Miracle of Catfish Hunter” continues as the veteran New York Yankees starter downed his former teammates the Oakland A’s by the score of 6-2. He finishes the month of August 1978 with a 6-0 record with a 1.64 ERA. The victory helps keep the Yankees stay at 7 ½ games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

1925 New York Yankees: Babe Ruth gets fined $5,000 and suspension from Manager Miller Huggins







August 29, 1925- After a night on the town, Babe Ruth shows up late for team batting practice. New York Yankees Manager Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps a $5,000 fine on him for disobeying orders on the field and team rules off the field. In the showdown between the Bambino and the tiny manager, New York Yankees Owner Jake Ruppert backs up his Manager. Babe Ruth is forced to apologize, before he's reinstated to the team 9 days later. The day after his return to the Yankees starting lineup, Babe Ruth hits MLB career HR # 300.

Happy Birthday to Former Yankees OF Archie Moore







August 30, 1941- Former Yankees Reserve OF Archie Moore (1964-1965) was born.
Before the start of the 1963 MLB season, the New York Yankees signed Archie Moore as an MLB amateur free agent. Archie appeared in 40 games for the 1964-1965 Yankees, while hitting .275 in a reserve role. He would leave the Yankees organization at the end of the 1967 season. He would play in the Cincinnati Reds organization from 1968 to 1969, then retiring as active player. Moore was the head baseball coach at Western New England College in 1970. Then he was head baseball coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 1971-1982.

1956 New York Yankees: Ike watches Nats Slugger Jim Lemon hit 3 HRS off of Whitey Ford, but the Yankees still win the game by the score of 6-4.

August 31, 1956- President Dwight D. Eisenhower is in attendance at Griffth Stadium in Washington, D. C., as OF Jim Lemon of the Senators slugs 3 consecutive HRs in a night game against the New York Yankees, but the Bronx Bombers still win the game by a score of 6-4. All 3 of Lemon’s HRs were hit off of Yankees Ace Whitey Ford, who won his 15th game of the 1956 season with relief help from Tom Morgan, who picks up his 3rd save of the season. Yankees slugger Mickey Mantle broke the 4-4 tie in the 7th inning with his 47th HR of the 1956 American League season. Nats starter Camilo Pascual takes the lost, he is now at 6-14 mark.

1931 New York  Yankees: Lou Gehrig's Power Streak Continues







September 1, 1931- Lou Gehrig hits his 3rd Grand Slam Home Run in 5 days and his 6th HR in consecutive games when he connects in a 5-1 second-game win over the Boston Red Sox. The blast‚ his 40th HR of the 1931 American League season‚ comes in the 3rd inning off of Ed Morris. Gehrig connects in the opener’s 11-3 win against Milt Gaston‚ belting his 39th HR in the 7th inning. Lou finishes the day with 6 RBIs, he has knocked in 21 runs in the past 6 games. With the Philadelphia A's losing to the Washington Senators‚ Yankees are a half-game out of 2nd place.

1996 New York Yankees: David Cone's Remarkable Comeback







September 2, 1996-New York Yankees veteran starter David Cone makes a dramatic return to the mound after his May operation to remove an aneurysm in his pitching arm by pitching 7 no-hit innings. The Yankees beat the Oakland A's by the score of 5-0, as reliever Mariano Rivera goes 2-innings of relief, gives up 1-hit to Jose Herrera in the 8th inning. David Cone's remarkable return sends veteran hurler Kenny Rogers to the Yankees bullpen.

1947 New York Yankees: Scorecard full of Yankee Singles at Fenway Park





September 3, 1947- At Fenway Park, New York Yankee batters Tommy Henrich and Joe DiMaggio lead the way with 4-hits each as the Yankees bang out a total 18-hits, all singles in defeating the Boston Red Sox by a score of 11-2 in the 1st game of a doubleheader. In the nite-cap, the Yankees made 16-hits and out-slugged the Red Sox by the score of 9-6.

1991 New York Yankees: What Asterisk? *







September 4, 1991- Removing an asterisk which really never existed, the Statistical Accuracy Committee decides to put Roger Maris '61 Home Run season ahead of Babe Ruth's 60 Home Run mark instead of listing it separately as it was from 1962 until 1991. Regarding the expunging of the asterisk, historian Bill Deane later points out, "It was an easy job: the asterisk never existed.  Roger Maris' record was, from 1962 until 1991, listed separately from Babe Ruth's and was never actually defined by 'some distinctive mark.”

Happy Birthday to Former Yankees Pitcher and Coach Gil Patterson








September 5, 1955- Former Yankees hurler  (1977) and minor league pitching coach Gil Patterson was born.
Gil Patterson was a 1st round 7th pick by the Yankees in the 1975 MLB amateur player draft. He appeared in 10 games for the 1977 Yankees, going 1-2. His MLB pitching career was ended by arm injuries, Gil had 8 arm operations. He began his pro career in fine form in the 1975 New York-Penn League, going 8-4 with a 1.95 ERA for the Oneonta Yankees. He was 3rd in the league in wins, 4th in ERA and his 97 strikeouts (in 106 innings) led the NY-P. In 1976, Gil moved up to the West Haven Yankees. In AA, he was 9-2 with a 2.07 ERA and allowed only 67 hits in 100 innings, throwing the Eastern League's only no-hitter of the season on June 28th against the Williamsport Tomahawks. Had he qualified, he would have been 4th in the league in ERA. Gil was promoted to the Syracuse Chiefs; Patterson was 7-2 with a 2.92 ERA and completed 6 of 10 starts. He was 2-1 with a 4.82 ERA for the Chiefs in '77 mixed in with his season in the MLB. He tried to come back in the low minors in the early 1980's, even trying to learn to pitch left-handed. The comeback started on a strong note, as he was 5-2 with a 1.58 ERA for the 1980 GCL Yankees, finishing 4th in the Gulf Coast League in ERA. He was 1-4 with a 3.20 ERA for the 1981 Fort Lauderdale Yankees and then 1-1, 1.33 ERA for the 1982 Fresno Giants to complete his comeback bid. He was 33-16 in his minor league career. He took a job parking cars at a restaurant that George Steinbrenner went to. Steinbrenner offered him a job as a minor league coach in the Yankees minor league system. He began coaching in 1984 with the Oneonta Yankees, but he was fired after the season for refusing to let Pitcher Al Leiter pitch with a sore arm. He moved in 1991 to the Oakland A’s organization. He was the pitching coach for the Madison Muskies in 1992-1993 and the West Michigan Whitecaps in 1994. In 1996, he was the roving minor league instructor. He joined the Arizona Diamondbacks organization as minor league pitching coordinator from 1997 to 2000. In 2001, he got a job with the Toronto Blue Jays as the MLB bullpen coach (2001) and then as MLB pitching coach (2002-2004). In 2005, Gil was a coach for the Columbus Clippers (AAA) and in 2006 with the GCL Yankees.
 
"He's one of the best pitching coaches anywhere, because he knows how hard pitching is, and he knows what a pitcher goes through to get to the big leagues." - Al Leiter, speaking about Gil Patterson. He is the current pitching coach for the Trenton Thunder (AA) in the Yankees organization.
