Francona managed the game great yesterday

No, I address my posts to the board, but I reply to you. I let you know what I'm saying. I'm not a pre-scholler who writes gossip threads about people to bait them into replying. That is troll behavior. I know, there's that word again. Some descriptions fit better than others.

And same goes for Ratman. No need to take cheap shots at him. His opinion is as valid as anyone else's.

He didn't do an overly impressive job last night, but he did great with what he had to work with.

Not overly impressive, but great? Does great mean anything anymore?

I'm not saying he was awful, he wasn't. But what did he do that was great managing? Putting in subs? One item I see people note is that he had Varitek catch but not bat, since his hitting is terrible this year. Ok nice, but that isn't great managing, especially not in-game managing. That was obviously pre-planned if he did that for that reason.

Again, my main gripe is how K-Rod and Mo shared the 9th. That was bad managing in a tie game, to only get 2 batters and 1 out from the saves leader. Also, the AL got stuck with having Navarro run for himself in extra innings, and he got thrown out at the plate. Now, I'm not complaining that Francona was out of subs because that is normal in an ASG, but to me "great" managing would have resulted in a pinch runner being available there.

Repeating myself, he was not terrible or bad, and he showed class. But he was not great.

Totally agree with you. He did a bad job with the 9th inning and everything else was by the numbers. There was nothing great about it. No one has named anything that he did that was great either. It's like just by being the manager, you automatically get accolades bestowed upon you.

Francona was classy and I'm not even saying he's a bad manager. But I don't see this great job that he did.

I think the point was that with what he had to work with he did great....and I'm not entirely talking about the baseball moves he made. Bringing replacements for Jeter and ARod was classy, pinch hitting for Varitek because he didn't deserve to hit...those things all make up for a great night of managing.

As for KRod and Mo sharing an inning. Had he not done that there would have been a possiblilty of not seeing one of them in the ASG, neither of which would have been OK to do. As I have said ASG managers have pitch counts and inning counts to work with that aren't there in other game scenarios. He did a great job with what he had to work with.

Only not using Mo would have been unacceptable, even to non-Yankee fan observers. K-Rod missing would have been ok. If the AL took the lead in the bottom of the 8th, would he have done the same thing? No way, Mo would have started the 9th and K-Rod would have missed the game, so Francona was willing to let that happen.

And to me there were worse possibilities by doing it the way he did it. What if K-Rod gave up a run in those first 2 batters? Mo comes in while trailing? Awful.

What if it was first and third thanks to K-Rod? Mo comes into a situation where a run is very likely to score? Awful.

What if Mo used a few more pitches to get out of the 9th, and threw a few more in the first 2or 3 batters in the 10th, does Francona remove Mo (pitch count) in the middle of an inning? Awful.
