LA Times:

.....Joe Torre is talking about extending his contract as manager with the Dodgers and remaining beyond next season.

"Where did you get that?" Torre says

But it's true, Torre says, "we're talking about it."

...."We were talking about my coaches and I've been thinking about it," Torre says while mentioning General Manager Ned Colletti's name and plans to chat again once Torre returns from a charity function in New York.

"It's been fun. When I came here, I was curious about how it might go. But the last two years have been invigorating. You see progress and your ego tells you maybe you had something to do with it."

....But what would that mean for Don Mattingly, who had interviews with Cleveland and Washington a few weeks ago about managerial openings and who has been mentioned as heir apparent to Torre?

"We'll discuss Don this winter as well," Colletti says. "We believe he wants to stay here and we'll see where that goes.

....Mattingly is in Indiana, and with nothing to do there, he was obviously available take a call. He says, 'it doesn't bother me at all Joe wants to work another year or whatever.

"I really like it there and that's key for me. They've shown me tremendous loyalty and I like the club. I can't say assurances have been given to me [about becoming Torre's successor], but I like the way talks are going. That's a place where I want to be."

Don has years and years of possible managerial employment ahead of him -- no rush. Wink

I think Torre's shine got dimmed greatly when the Yankees won the World Series without him. I think that's perhaps the reason why he wants to continue on managing.

Michael Kay, on his show, has said several times that Torre isn't exactly as "saintly" as he appears to be; that he's out only for one person in baseball...and that's himself.  From the Rick Downs story, to him advising Bernie Williams to swallow his pride, and even to his own situation regarding his perception of being insulted....this situation with Dodgers seems to be a continuation of a Torre trend and i would be surprised if the Yankees 27th World Championship has something to do with it.

As far as I'm concerned Torre used the word himself ... this is the problem with Torre.

yep, Donnie has to stop being the guy waiting in the wings. Donnie is my favorite player of all time, but enough already, go out and manage a  team, Torre's ego has gotten as big as his nose,  Donnie needs to stop waiting for the stars to align.  The way I see it is, the Dodgers org is not stable with all the McCourt divorce talk, after Torre and McCourt are ready to hand it over there may not be anything there to hand over. I think the Nats would be a perfect fit, no expectations, got some good prospects, tough Division but is in the Nations capital and the eastern div. Like Girardi did with the Marlins, treat it like a internship, gain some experience and when a real team is looking for someone, they can not hold the lack of experience against him.  Torre will only hand something over willingly when it is entirely not worth having.

I wonder if anybody asked the Dodgers if they wanted to sign him to an extension.   The McCourts are going thru a nasty divorce and they'd probably love to cut that salary off their payroll and give the job to Mattingly who would be a lot cheaper.

You "fans" are way too quick to turn on someone who was at the helm for 15% of your WS rings as well as numerous play off appearances.

I think you have something there, IMO, Torre wants to win away from NY to show everyone that he can.

DC do you really think Torre is responsible for all those rings, gimmie a break. I defended him for years, but Joe lost me after the Cleveland series, and the final nail in his legacy was his greaseball book.  Some people on these boards confuse baseball with Football, managers can only lose games in baseball, they dont win them.

I agree ... Donnie should move on ... it's time he strikes out on his own.
