Odds & Ends: Chapman, Cubs, Holliday, Damon

Links for Saturday afternoon ...

  • Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News spoke with a baseball executive who believes the Yankees will wind up with Aroldis Chapman.  "My bet is that it'll come down to the Yankees and Red Sox, like it always does..." said the executive. "And I think the Yankees will get him.  They can give him a big-league contract over five years for $20 million and they don't even feel that."

  • Meanwhile, Phil Rogers of The Chicago Tribune posted his projections on where some notable free agents will land. He sees Matt Holliday signing with Boston, while both Jason Bay and John Lackey land with the Angels.

  • The Yankees' biggest focus right now is finding a "common ground" with Johnny Damon, according to Newsday's Ken Davidoff. Hideki Matsui seems to be less of a priority

Would Yanks pass up Holliday, Bay for Crawford? — 12:00 p.m.

Two years ago, the Yankees held off trading for left-hander Johan Santana so they could wait for CC Sabathia to hit the free-agent market the following winter.

Might they take the same strategy this offseason, bypassing free-agent outfielders Matt Holliday and Jason Bay in order to wait one more year for Rays left fielder Carl Crawford?

The Yankees might not be thinking that far ahead, but Crawford could be available for them at the right time.

Say the Yankees re-signed Johnny Damon to a two-year deal and lost their other big free-agent bat, Hideki Matsui. Crawford could take over for Damon in left in 2011, with Damon getting more at-bats at DH.

Of course, the Yankees would face competition for Crawford; White Sox general manager Ken Williams loves him, the Angels undoubtedly would see him as a perfect fit, and the Astros would love to bring him home to Houston. And those are just three teams.

Then again, the Yankees generally get the players they want. Crawford will be only 29 when he hits the open market. For a team seeking to get younger and more athletic, he would be an ideal choice.

Dare I hope????

Do not be shocked if Crawford signs an extension with Tampa.   He wants to stay and they want him.   Of course they're also very cheap so it may never come to pass and they may just be trying to appease their fans with their comments.   I don't see anyway the Yankees are spending big money this offseason unless Damon goes elsewhere.  Even then I don't see them getting Holliday or Bay.  I think they'd take a cheaper route.   That could lead room for Crawford after next year if he does become available.   My prediction:  Damon,  Matsui and Andy are all resigned on short term deals.   I would personally go for Halladay and wouldn't think twice about it,  but I don't think they do that unless it becomes apparent Boston is going to sign him.   I think they'll look for a cheaper alternative for the rotation like a Sheets or Harden.

BG- I have an idea - how about: Wang, Kennedy, Igawa and Shelley Duncan for Doc????? Now that is a TRADE!!!!!! I agree, we re-sign Pettitte, Damon and Matsui to a one or two year deal and get Crawford next year......but we get Doc this year ---oh my God, I think I'm having a hotflash!! LOL

Thanks BG.... I also found the 2 articles by Chad Jennings in his LOHUD blog... I guess Dunn is already on the 40 man roster so he is safe. I couldn't understand why they would put a hard throwing lefty at risk for another team to pick up...  Here are his 2 articles

Was that a joke proposal or a serious one?  If you were the Blue Jays, would you give up one of the top pitchers in baseball for a guy who hasn't pitched in 2 years, a guy coming off a serious surgery who is unproven in the majors, and 2 guys not good enough to be in the majors?

That's obviously a joke Marc.  The lol (laugh out loud) is the dead give away.   By the way,  welcome aboard.

I've seen worse suggestions :D

Some of the pro-Yankee arguments can be pretty ridiculous.  I heard one person argue that CC should have had the Cy Young because people didn't try as hard against an easy team like the Royals.  I don't get that, but it was the argument.
