Will Gardner Get A Chance To Shine?

With Melky no longer in the picture, could Gardner finally be looking to get a REAL chance to showcase his talent for at least half a season (if not a full season)? I don't think it would hurt to at least try. If he's absolutely awful, the Yankees could always make a move prior to the trade deadline. I, personally, want to see what he REALLY has to offer.

This has NOTHING to do with having a "mancrush" or that other silly thinking that some of you think of it as. When I see or have seen someone who looks to have some promise and potential, I want to see them get a chance to really show themselves. A player involved in a handful to very limited amounts of games can't really be judged. At least a half season as a full-time player will give you some sort of indication about that particular player.

Looking at this potential situation for a minute, the Yankees could end up having Gardner and Granderson (2 basestealing threats) at the top of their lineup. With basestealing threats in front of good hitters such as Jeter, Teixeira and A-Rod, the Yankees are most likely to score early in games Of course, both Gardner and Granderson have to get on base first. I think they'd do a good job in that situation.

Just a thought.

he'll be shining in his now secure job.... 4th outfielder.

also I doubt we'll se granderson at the top of the lineup. with the projected yankee lineup for 2010 he'll be slotted somewhere in the 7-9 hole.

So far the only thing that shines with Gardner is speed ... and at times he certainly doesn't look like he handles the base paths all too well ... so that speed doesn't even work for him at times.  Doubt very much the Yankees plan on keeping Gardner as their everyday leftfielder ... Cashman was already talking on MLB Network last night about looking into a leftfielder ... here's to hoping they come up with someone.  However, if Gardner is the price we have to pay for getting Vazquez and not seeing Joba and Hughes in the rotation at the same time in 2010, I'll take the trade off ... and hopefully the people who continue to think that Gardner is the second-coming will realize after a decent amount of consistent playing time, that he is a mediocre player at best.

Gardner is a nice piece of the overall puzzle.  He can be the fourth outfielder and provide pinch running in the later innings.  That is, if he doesn't get picked off!!

Gardner will not be the everyday left fielder. I agree with sports  radio , if he is  ,he will be exposed for the  4th outfielder he is

.

When Gardner can figure out how to steel first base then he will be a every day player.. The kid just can't hit and if you can't hit your not going to be a corner outfielder.. I don't care how fast you are, he doesn't put the bat on the ball near enough either.. Way too many K's...  And as is I don't like our starting out field..  There's no way Gardner is going to be our everyday LF'er...

Jimmy, I agree wholeheartedly with both of these thoughts.  Granderson should not bat any higher than 7.

If the season started today, who would you have in the top 3 slots of the lineup? Also, who would you have protecting A-Rod? The way I see it, I don't think there's anyone in the Yankees lineup (other than Teixeira) who I'd want protectin A-Rod. That was Matsui's role, but now he's gone (sadly). And Posada, Swisher and Cano aren't exactly "scary".

Mo, no one (well, not me) is expecting Gardner to be an all-star or anything like that. Some just want to see what the guy has to offer on a consistent basis. Besides, there doesn't seem to be too many reliable options on the market since Damon, Bay and Holliday are demanding contracts that certain teams prefer not to deal with or simply can't afford. If Gardner shows that he's nothing more than a 4th OF'er, then he goes back to the 4th OF'er role. Then perhaps, there's the possibility he becomes the Yankees version of Jacoby Ellsbury. Either way, it can't hurt the Yankees so I don't understand why people aren't willing to try it out.

I wonder if people here would rather overpay for an aging Damon or give Bay or Holliday the long term contracts they're seeking than to give someone within the organization a shot?
