MLB - Sports Rumors

Mariano RiveraRemember when closer John Wetteland left the New York Yankees back in 1996 after a World Series victory and there was concern about whether setup man Mariano Rivera(notes) could handle the closing duties?

Obviously, there was nothing to worry about. Rivera has only become basically the best closer in history since then. And even though his contract runs out at the end of the year, it doesn't appear that Yankees fans should be concerned in the slightest, according to the New York Daily News.

"I have a contract this year, that's all I need to know," Rivera told the Daily News. "The rest is out of my control, therefore I don't have to worry about it." The 40-year-old also made it clear that he intends to retire in pinstripes after pitching for as long as his arm holds out.

The contracts of Derek Jeter(notes) and manager Joe Girardi also run out at the end of the year and it is expected that both of them will also re-sign at season's end without any real drama.

That is one thing I really like about Girardi. How many other managers will actually do the ST streching and running drills with their players???
