04/13/2010 - TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT RUNNING BACKS: *Ryan  Mathews, Fresno State, 6-0, 218, 1: Mathews led the nation in rushing in high  school and college, but NFL scouts seemed to remain skeptical until he dazzled  them at the combine, where his best time over 40 yards was 4.37 seconds. He is a  decisive, strong, cut-and-go runner who uses exceptional leg and body strength  to run through most tackles. He also is an effective blocker on passes and in  space and has soft, reliable hands as a receiver. In 2009, Mathews rushed for  1,808 yards despite missing a game and a half because of injuries. He was at his  best against the best on the Bulldogs' schedule, such as Boise State (234 yards,  three touchdowns), Wisconsin (107 rushing yards), Cincinnati (145 rushing yards,  touchdown) and Illinois (173 rushing yards, three touchdowns). - Frank Cooney,  The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY

04/02/2010 - When top receiving prospect Dez Bryant was  showing his skills to more than a dozen NFL teams Tuesday in Lufkin, Texas,  Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland and football boss Bill Parcells hung  behind at the team's Davie facility. They instead were getting a closer look at  Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain, another prospect who was visiting  with the Dolphins. So does that mean McClain has a better shot at being the  team's first-round pick (12th overall) in the draft? Have fun trying to read  those tea leaves. Here's what is worth noting: Bryant's Pro Day on Tuesday  wasn't overly impressive ... but it wasn't devastating, either. His 40-yard  dash, when taking multiple reports into account, ranged from 4.52 to 4.68  seconds on different attempts. Those times were measured with and against the  wind. The Dolphins weren't represented at the Pro Day by any of their top  officials, unlike several other teams around the league, but they did have an  area scout in attendance. Then again, consider this: Two years ago, when the  Dolphins had the No. 1 overall pick, they had only one scout at tackle Jake  Long's Pro Day. McClain's presence still is worth noting. He surely won't be  available in the second round, so if the Dolphins decide they want him, they  will have to take him with the No. 12 pick ... even though they recently signed  Karlos Dansby. - Jeff Darlington, The Miami Herald

04/13/2010 - Even though two defensive linemen could be  taken in the first three picks, there is a good chance that an appealing one  will fall to the Ravens near the bottom of the first round next week. Penn  State's Jared Odrick, the consensus No. 3 defensive tackle in the draft, fits  the personality of the Ravens' defense. In commenting on Odrick's high-energy  play and toughness, one team official recently said, "He plays like a Raven."  Odrick was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year by the league's  coaches after he recorded 43 tackles last season for the Nittany Lions. He also  had seven sacks and 11 tackles for losses. The biggest reason why Odrick could  last into the second half of the first round is he's not considered flashy. He  stops the run and rushes the passer equally well, but isn't dominant in either  area. "The fact that he's got a great motor and had great production in college  is his highest testament," said Mike Mayock, the NFL Network's draft analyst.  "It will be tough for some of those teams at the end of the first round to pass  on him." The Ravens, who hold the 25th overall pick, are likely among those  teams who won't pass on Odrick. - Jamison Hensley, The Baltimore Sun

If the Giants got Spiller, that's an outstanding selection. He was the premier return man in CFB last year.
