With Brewers hiring new manager Roenicke, do you think Rick Peterson is available as an option for pitching coach?  Do you think Yankees have any interest in him???

Brewers Hire Ron Roenicke As Manager

The Brewers have hired Ron Roenicke as their new manager, tweets Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times.  The report has been confirmed by Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (Twitter link).  Bobby Valentine, Bob Melvin, and Joey Cora were also  reportedly candidates for the job.  Roenicke has served as a coach with  the Angels for eleven years, managing in the minor leagues before that.   Roenicke spent eight seasons playing outfield in the Majors for the  Dodgers, Mariners, Padres, Giants, Phillies, and Reds.

I would be very surprised if Rick Petersen didn't at least get an interview.   He's got a good background,  mostly from his A's days.  I personally like Gil Patterson.   I thought he did a really good job when he was up at Toronto a few years ago.

Hal Steinbrenner: Payroll staying “within the same level”

Posted by: Chad Jennings

After  attending the Yankees organizational meetings the past two days in  Tampa, Hal Steinbrenner did a pair of radio interviews this afternoon —  one on ESPN, one on WFAN — to discuss the state of the Yankees and what  comes next.

Most of it was fairly predictable, and Steinbrenner went into very  few details. He did say the Yankees payroll will not shift drastically  one way or the other this winter.

“I can safely say we’re going to stay within the same level, but I’m  obviously not going to get into details,” he said during The Michael Kay  Show. “We know we’re expected to field a championship caliber team and  we’re going to do what it takes to do that. If we have to get creative  in a trade, or we have to go after a big free agent, we’re going to do  that. We do have some money coming off.”

A few minutes later, Steinbrenner was asked a similar question by Mike Francesa.

“I’m not going to get into specifics, but yes we’ve got a good idea  of where we’re going to try to end up,” he said. “We have some money  coming off the payroll. Obviously re-signing Derek and Mo is going to be  a priority to try to do that, but we’re still going to have money  leftover. These meetings are pretty initial at this point, but it’s all  about prioritizing what we need to do and looking at the free agent  market and eventually looking at possible trades to try to improve.”

A few bullet-point items that were discussed.

• On the approach to Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera: “Derek and Mo,  obviously we want them back. They’re hopefully lifelong Yankees. They’re  great leaders. They’ve been great Yankees, but we’re running a  business. If there’s a deal to be done, it has to be a deal that both  sides are happy with.”

• Steinbrenner said he wasn’t sure he could directly address Cliff  Lee rumors. Instead, he simply said: “We are looking at the free agent  market as we do every year.”

• Steinbrenner said Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg called him “within an  hour or two” of Greenberg’s comments going public yesterday. The  Yankees had already contacted Major League Baseball to let them know  they planned to respond “in an aggressive way.” They agreed to hold off  until after the World Series game, and ultimately Steinbrenner was  satisfied with Greenberg’s apology. “I believe he’s sincerely sorry,”  Steinbrenner said. “You either forgive him or you don’t. You either move  on or you don’t.”

• The Yankees could not find evidence of any specific incident that  would have bothered Cliff Lee’s wife during the ALCS. “As far as I could  tell, we couldn’t find anything,” Steinbrenner said.

• Steinbrenner said he did not watch the World Series “inning to  inning,” but he did watch some of it. He was impressed by the Giants  pitching (obviously).

• On ticket prices: “The Legends section is the section everybody  seemed to focus on. We did very well there this year. I think the price  reduction really worked. We were about 92, 93 percent as I recall. The  numbers were very close to that, anyway… That area did very well, but  we’re going to do this every year. We’re going to talk to our fans.  We’re going to look at every single section, and we’ll make price  adjustments as we need to. Some sections may be overpriced. Some may be  underpriced, quite frankly. That’s something we’re going to do, and  should be doing, on an annual basis.”

I think Hals taking the high road and handling this in the best way possible....I'm still pissed as a Yankee fan, but I'm ready to move on. Greenberg and the Rangers would love to get in a media war with the Yankees to try and scare Cliff Lee off.

Sincere is not the correct word to describe this scenario as Selig coheres Greenberg into making his apology public. A fine is at hand otherwise.  To me his apology rings hollow.

I agree lauren.... I don't care if he's sincere or not. Hal's doing the right thing though... Take the high road. Let the story die, Greenberg's just looking to get into a media war with the Yankees. He's probably the one who started the bogus Mrs Lee story.

The more I think about, you are correct.  With security in place, I don't see this occurring without any fanfare or ejections.  I believe Greenberg was looking for a reason to make head lines and the overly sensitive Mrs  Lee supplied it.  Perhaps words was heard from her direction as she amped it up with her sensibilities.  Her husband must be far from pleased.  He needs the Yankees to jack up his value....Cool

Hal talks playoffs, Jeter, payroll, plans

By Benjamin Kabak

Hal Steinbrenner has vowed to make the 2011 Yankees a World Series-caliber team. (AP Photo/Kathy Willens)

Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees’ Managing General Partner and  co-chairman, took to the airwaves this afternoon and spent around 20  minutes chatting with Michael Kay and then Mike Francesa on New York’s  two sports talk radio stations. While keeping the Yanks’ offseason plans  close to the vest, Steinbrenner let slip a few choice words on the  playoff scheduling, Chuck Greenberg’s recent comments, the clubs’ payroll and the Yanks’ willingness to dip into the free agency pool.

We’ll start with the sexy stuff. Hal opened both interviews with his assessment of the team’s performance in the playoffs.  Both times, he blamed the days off in between the end of the ALDS and  the start of the ALCS. “We seemed a little bit cold in that series,” Hal  said of the ALCS. “I don’t know if it was the long layoff or not.” I’ll  have more on the playoff format and the unnecessary days off later  tonight, but the Yanks never seemed to click during the ALCS. Having to  stop play for six days probably didn’t help.

As a side note, Hal also called the 2010 season “very disappointing.”  I don’t find myself too disappointed by a six-game ALCS series even  though the Yanks lost. Counting the playoffs, they won 101 games this  year, tops among AL teams and just one fewer than the World Series  champion Giants. It was disappointing to see them go down against Texas,  but this was a fun season.

The Yanks’ co-owner shifted gears after that to talk about Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.  “We absolutely want [Jeter] back. We absolutely want Mo back,” he said.  Having said that, we’re running a business.” In fact, that’s a point  Hal stressed in both radio appearances. The Yanks are a business and  with Derek, the Steinbrenners want “a deal both sides are happy with.”

Hal seemed less nostalgic and sympathetic to the idea that Jeter  deserves a huge contract than either Kay or Francesa wanted him to be.  While noting that Derek is one of the all-time Yankee greats, he warned  Kay, “There’s always the possibility that things could get messy.” To  Francesa, he elaborated, “I want to get a deal done that he’s happy with  but also that I’m happy with.”

In addition to resigning their own players, the Yankees will be active in the free agent market.  Without naming specifics, Hal committed to spending the organization’s  money. “We are looking at the free agent market as we do every year,” he  said. “We certainly have money to spend and we’re going to look into  it.” The team’s payroll, Hal said, will likely be on  par with 2010′s though. So we shouldn’t expect too many big-ticket  purchases if the team adheres to that budget.

Steinbrenner also stressed the team’s strategy. The use the free  agent market to complement their youth movement, but they’re always  going to spend money. “The fans need to know we’re not putting money in  our pockets left and right,” he said. “We put most or all of it back  into” the team. He also mentioned that the Legends Suites were sold at  rates above 90 percent this year and that the franchise may adjust some  ticket prices for 2011.

Finally, Hal talked about Chuck Greenberg’s comments.  The Rangers CEO accused Yankee fans of being both violent and  apathetic, and the Bombers were prepared to retaliate. These were  “inappropriate, ridiculous comments,” Hal said. While the club accepted  Greenberg’s apology, Hal was fairly merciless. “Stupid comments…they  were inappropriate, “he said. “You need to apologize to our fans.”

At the end of both interviews, Hal said it was there intentions to  build up the 2011 Yankees a “World Series-type team.” Whether it be via  trade, free agency or both, the Yanks have a busy Hot Stove League ahead of them.

Harkey gets ‘serious consideration’ for pitching coach spot

By Mike Axisa

Via Sweeny Murti,  bullpen coach Mike Harkey is being given “serious consideration” for  the team’s vacant pitching coach position. He’s served as the Yankees’  bullpen coach since 2008, and although he has no full-time experience as  a pitching coach in the big leagues (remember he did fill in for a  month while Dave Eiland was on personal leave in June), he’s done it at  the Triple-A level. Harkey’s familiarity with the staff certainly works  in his favor.

Steinbrenner: Jeter Deal Must Work For Both Sides

Derek Jeter is  almost certainly going to re-sign with the Yankees this offseason, but  the Bronx Bombers aren't going to hand their shortstop a blank  check. Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner told Michael  Kay on 1050 ESPN that a deal between Jeter and the team would have to  work for both sides (Click here to listen in). Steinbrenner says doesn't assume negotiations with the franchise icon will go smoothly.

“There’s always the possibility that things could get messy,” Steinbrenner said.

The Yankees don't expect talks to get ugly and they have been in contact with Jeter's representatives because they want to reach a deal.

“We absolutely want him back. We absolutely want [free agent closer Mariano Rivera] back. They’re career Yankees,” Steinbrenner said. “But having said that, we’re running a business here. So if there’s a  deal to be done, it’s going to be a deal that both sides are happy  with.”

Steinbrenner said the team's payroll will remain at a similar level  in 2011. The Yankees entered the 2010 season with a payroll over $200MM,  so they will presumably have the means to offer Cliff  Lee, Jeter and Rivera generous deals.
