Nuggets grant Nets permission to speak with Anthony

By David Aldridge, TNT Analyst

A  league source said Sunday that the Denver Nuggets have granted the New  Jersey Nets permission to speak directly with Carmelo Anthony about the  proposed trade that would send Anthony to New Jersey, and about  potentially signing the three-year extension that the Nets insist  Anthony agree to before they agree to make the deal.

Anthony has made it clear  that he would like to be traded to the Knicks. But the Nets have been in  the lead for weeks now, because of their unique ability at the moment  to give the Nuggets a package of young players and draft picks Denver  wants. The Nets have offered to send first-round pick Derrick Favors,  two draft picks and other players to Denver for Anthony and guard  Chauncey Billups, with guard Rip Hamilton coming from Detroit to Jersey  in exchange for forward Troy Murphy.

Under normal rules, direct  contact with Anthony by Nets officials, up to and including majority  owner Mikhail Prokhorov, would be tampering. But if Denver gives New  Jersey permission to contact Anthony, the Nets can make their sales  pitch to Anthony about their team without being subject to penalties.  Prohkorov, according to league sources, believes he can sell Anthony on  the Nets if he can get in front of him.

Anthony has declined to  sign the $65 million extension in Denver for months, with momentum  building toward a trade in the last few days. Sources indicated last  week that they believed the three-team deal would be consummated this  week.

With Denver constantly renegotiating the deal, I don't hold that same confidence. The Nets are ready and willing, the Pistons are definitely ready and willing, who knows with Melo at this point... and Denver just constantly changes their demands. I'd love for this all to be over by the end of next week.

Now 'Melo is saying he doesnt want to talk to anybody because thats the  front office's job.  I've got to disagree with 'Melo here.  If infact  Denver really did grant the Nets permission to speak with him then  obviously Denver has already negotiated and is willing to make the deal.  Why on earth would Denver grant the Nets this permission if they  werent finally ready to do the deal? Doesnt 'Melo see that?  Maybe its a  stall tactic til the Knicks (maybe) get a first round pick for  Randolph. I hope not.

Melo is really being a major prlck here. He can really watch all these negotiations and distractions going on for weeks and weeks without even releasing whether he will be willing to play for the Nets or not?? The Nets are sacrificing all but 5 players on their roster for his services, and he won't even give a straight answer... he just tries to play dumb and act like he hasn't heard anything about a trade or talks. Just say whether you are willing to meet with Proko, Avery, and King or turn the Nets down... don't drag this out.

AP: It's Not 'Melo, It's the Nuggets

Tom Canavan, the AP writer who covers the Nets,  reports Tuesday that the main holdup is NOT Carmelo Anthony's  willingness to sign a $64.47 million extension with the Nets, but the  Nets and Nuggets' unwillingness to "to agree on the exact price that will  persuade the Nuggets to finally part with their franchise player."

Canavan doesn't detail what the Nuggets want that the Nets won't give  up, but does quote "a person with knowledge of the proposed trade"  saying the Nets believe 'Melo will sign with them.  "The Nets are not  concerned about Anthony's commitment to the  franchise for the long term  should the trade be completed," he writes, "They  are convinced the  26-year-old will sign a $65 million, three-year  contract extension if  New Jersey, Denver and Detroit can agree on the  other parts of the  deal."

Earlier Tuesday, there were reports the Nuggets want the Nets to give up Damion James and accept Renaldo Balkman.   Fred Kerber also wrote the two teams are haggling over draft rights.   The Nets are willing to give up two of their own, he reported, but the  teams have not reached agreement on the third pick.

I guess I can understand the Nets haggling over giving up a 3rd draft pick (and if so, which pick they have to give up).  But arguing over Balkman and Damian James? Come on. Who cares? Tiny pieces like that shouldnt matter at this point.

But I see the Nets being pissed too.. offering Favors/ Harris/ Morrow/ 2 first rounders and then being told we need another pick on top of it and you need to take Balkman off our hands for Damian James. The whole thing just needs to end already. Its getting to be almost as bad as Lebron's "decision".
