August 28th

1875- Former Yankees INF Joseph “Little Joe” Yeager (1905-1906) was born.
In 1905, Joe Yeager was with the New York Highlanders, hitting .267 as the team's regular 3rd baseman. Joe's batting average was 19 points higher than the team batting average of .248. He hit .301 with a .407 on-base percentage in 1906, but only appeared in 57 games, mostly at 3rd base but also sometimes at shortstop. In the off-season, the Highlanders traded him to the St. Louis Browns for Catcher Branch Rickey.

1892- Former Yankees 3B/OF Bobby “Braggo” Roth (1921) was born.
On December 31, 1920, Bobby Roth was traded by the Washington Senators to the New York Yankees for OF Duffy Lewis and P George Mogridge. In 1921, Bobby hit .283 in 43 games for the Yankees. Bobby’s brother Frank Roth was the Yankees MLB pitching coach in 1921.

1896- Former Yankees INF/OF Aaron Ward (1917-1926) was born. (1896-1961)
Aaron Ward was the 2B for the New York Yankees in the days before Tony Lazzeri. Coming up in 1917 at age 20, he was one of the youngest players in the American League. He became a regular in 1920. Aaron was in the World Series of 1921, 1922, and 1923 (he hit .417 in the 1923 World Series, which the Yankees won).  Ward was one of several players who held out at the start of 1922 for better contracts. Ward succeeded in getting a big raise.  Aaron’s best Yankees season was in 1921, when he hit .306. Aaron hit .286 in 3 World Series with the Yankees. On January 13,1927, Aaron was traded by the New York Yankees to the Chicago White Sox for C Johnny Grabowski and INF Ray Morehart.

1907- New York Highlander P John "Tacks" Neuer begins baseball's most successful short career by besting the Boston Red Sox 1-0 in his 1st MLB start, the nightcap of a doubleheader. In 1 month, he will pitch 6 complete games, win 4, including 3 shutouts, and then disappear from the MLB scene. In the 1st game, veteran Boston Red Sox starter Cy Young wins his 20th game, defeating the Highlanders by a score of 5-3.

1916- Former Yankees reserve OF Michael “Shotgun” Chartak (1940) was born.
Reserve outfielder Mike Chartak appeared in 12 games for the 1940 Yankees, hitting just .100. On May 10,1942, Mike was purchased by the Washington Senators from the New York Yankees.

1921- Despite 3 doubles by Yankees slugger Babe Ruth, the Detroit Tigers drop the Yankees by score of 7-3. Ruth starts a record streak in which he gets at least 1 extra-base hit in 9 straight games. Into the record books go his 119 extra-base hits, 177 runs, and 457 total bases. His  .846 slugging average is one point behind that of a year ago.

1924- Despite Babe Ruth's 2-HRs, the Washington Senators beat the New York Yankees by the score of 11-6 and move into 1st place. The Yankees will tie them for 2 days in September, but otherwise the Washington Senators stay on top till the end of the 1924 AL season.

1924- The New Yankees purchased hurler Walter Beall from Rochester (International League) for $50,000. He went 4-5 for the Yankees, before being sent to Washington Senators.

1938- Former Yankees reserve OF Billy Cowan (1969) was born.
On December 2,1968, Billy Cowan was drafted by the New York Yankees from the Philadelphia Phillies organization in the 1968 MLB Rule 5 player draft. Billy hit .166 in 38 games for the Yankees, before being sent to the California Angels during the 1969 AL season.

1943- Former Yankees OF (1974-1984), MLB Coach, Manager (1986-1988) and General Manager, Lou Piniella was born.
Originally, the Cleveland Indians signed Lou Piniella in 1962. In 1969, he was drafted in the AL expansion player draft by the Seattle Pilots, who during spring training traded him to the Kansas City Royals. In 1969, he won the AL Rookie Of Year award with the Royals hitting .282. In 1972, he was a member of the AL All Star team. On December 7,1973, Lou was traded by the Royals along with P Ken Wright to the Yankees for veteran hurler Lindy McDaniel. Lou hit a career .295 in 1,037 games as a Yankee from 1974-1984. He was a clutch hitter in the post season play with a BA .300.  In 4 World Series, Lou hit .319 for the Yankees. After retiring as an active player in 1984, he became a Yankees MLB coach.

1946- Former Yankees P Mike Torrez (1977) was born.
On April 27,1977, Mike Torrez was traded by the Oakland A’s to the Yankees for P Dock Ellis, INF Marty Perez, and OF Larry Murray. In his only season he was a Yankees, Mike went 14-12 in 31 games with 15 complete games. He left the Yankees for MLB free agency, signing with their rivals, the Boston Red Sox.

1948- The New York Yankees stroll into 2nd-place by edging the Cleveland Indians by score of 3-2. Ahead 2-1, Tribe hurler Sam Zoldak wilts in the 98-degree weather and Gene Bearden replaces him in the 9th inning. Joe DiMaggio is hit, and 2 wild throws brings in Ed Klieman, who finishes the walk to Yogi Berra. A Bobby Brown sac bunt, and an intentional pass to Phil Rizzuto load the bases. Cliff Mapes walks to force a run and a grounder brings home the winning run.

1950- Former 1978 AL Cy Young winner Yankees pitcher and MLB Pitching Coach Ron “Gator” Guidry (1975-1988) was born. 
On June 8,1971, Ron Guidry was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 3rd round of the 1971 MLB amateur player draft. He went 170-91 with a .651 WP in 14 seasons with the Yankees. His best Yankees season was in 1978, when he went 25-3 in 35 games with 16 complete games, 9 shut outs with 1.78 ERA. In 1978, Ron won the Cy Young Award and the MLB Player of the Year Award. He was an AL ALL Star team member in 1978-1979 and 1982-1983. He led the AL in ERA in 1978-79. He was an AL Golden Glove winner from 1982-1986. His Yankees post season pitching record was 2-1 (3 World Series) 3-1 (LCS) and 6-2 in post season games.

1951- The Boston Braves sell veteran starter Johnny Sain to the New York Yankees for $50,000 and a young hurler named Lew Burdette. It is another late-season insurance measure for the Yankees. Lew Burdette would come back to haunt the Yankees in 1957 World Series with the Milwaukee Braves, beating them 3 times for the 1957 World Championship.

1952- The New York Yankees purchased veteran hurler Ewell “The Whip” Blackwell from the Cincinnati Reds for $35,000 and 4 players: pitchers Johnny Schmitz and Ernie Nevel, Outfielders Bob Marquis and Jim Greengrass. Blackwell will go 3-0 with 2 saves in September of 1952 and during the 1953 AL season. On March 30,1955, Ewell Blackwell was purchased by the Kansas City A’s from the Yankees for $50,000.

1960- At Yankee Stadium, the Yankees snap a 3-3 tie, when Mickey Mantle hits a 2-run HR in the 5th inning and Yogi Berra follows up with a solo HR. The New York Yankees top the Detroit Tigers by a score of 8-5.

1962- At Yankee Stadium, Mickey Mantle connects for a 2-run shot in the 4th inning off of Tribe starter Jim “Mudcat” Grant to give the Yankees a 2-1 win over the Cleveland Indians.

1972- Former Yankees reliever Jay Witasick (2001) was born.
On June 23, 2001, Jay Witasick was traded by the San Diego Padres to the New York Yankees for minor league INF prospect D'Angelo Jimenez. Jay went 3-0 in 32 games with the Yankees. On December 13, 2001, Jay was traded by the Yankees to the San Francisco Giants for OF/1B John Vander Wal.

1977- New York Yankees starter Ron Guidry fires his 3rd shutout of the 1977 AL season, a 1-0 whitewash of the Texas Rangers. Guidry faces just 28 Ranger batters, allowing only 2 hits.Yankees 3B Graig Nettles scores the winning run after belting as triple.

1996- The Seattle Mariner's 10-2 win over the visiting New York Yankees is delayed 10 minutes by a bench clearing brawl in the 8th inning following a close pitch by M's rookie Tim Davis. The M's John Marzano and Yankees OF Paul O'Neill and P Jeff Nelson, all receive 2-game suspensions, with the Yankees players, each getting fined $1,000. Yankees reliever Jeff Nelson opened the 8th inning by plunking Seattle Mariners batter Joey Cora.

1998- The Seattle Mariners clout 3 HRs in a 10-3 loss to the New York Yankees, making them the 1st team in history to reach the 200-HR mark for a season in 3 consecutive seasons. Shane Monahan, Russ Davis, and Rob Ducey, each belts a solo-HRs for the Seattle Mariners.

2008- The New York Yankees salvage the last game of a three game series with the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium with a 3-2 victory with Jason Giambi providing the Yankees offense with a game tying HR and the game winning a single in the 9th inning. Yankees starter Jim Mussina scattered 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 6 Red Sox batters, moving past Frank Tanana for sole possession of 20th place on MLB strikeout list with 2,778 career strikeouts.

August 29th

1888- Former Yankees P Ensign Cottrell (1915) was born.
On April 7,1915, Ensign Cottrell was purchased by the New York Yankees from the Boston Braves. Ensign appeared in 7 games with the 1915 Yankees, posting a 0-1 record.

1925- After a night on the town, Babe Ruth shows up late for batting practice. New York Yankees Manager Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps a $5,000 fine on him for disobeying orders on the field and team rules off the field. In the showdown between the Bambino and the tiny manager, New York Yankees Owner Jake Ruppert backs up his manager. Ruth is forced to apologize, before he's reinstated to the team 9 days later. The day after his return to the Yankee lineup, Ruth hits MLB career HR number 300.

1927- In St. Louis, the Yankees win their 18th game of the 1927 AL season against the Browns without a loss by the score of 8-3.

1928- Former Yankees P Mickey Dermont (1956) was born.
After being acquired from the Washington Senators, Mickey Dermont went 2-6 with the New York Yankees in 1956, before being sent to the Kansas City A’s in February of 1957, in the Bobby Shantz trade.

1931- In his 1st start following his loss, Lefty Grove fans the side (Sammy Byrd, Joe Sewell, Babe Ruth) in the 1st inning, hands out a walk to Lou Gehrig to start the 2nd inning, and records 3 more K's (Ben Chapman, Lyn Lary, Bill Dickey). Lefty has 2- K's in the 3rd inning but develops a blister from gripping the ball. Gehrig knocks Grove out of the box with a 6th-inning grand slam, but the Philadelphia A's lefty still wins the game by the score of 7-4. The Yankees Lou Gehrig now has 142 RBIs. Jimmie Foxx knocks in 5 runs for the A's.

1937- Former Yankees P Hal Stowe (1960) was born.
Before the 1959 AL Season, the New York Yankees signed Hal Stowe as an MLB amateur free agent. Hal went 0-0 in one game with the Yankees during the 1960 AL season. He remained in the Yankees minor league system during the mid-1960’s, never to pitch at the MLB level again.

1950- Former Yankees reserve INF George Zeber (1977-1978) was born.
On June 7,1968, George Zeber was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 5th round of the 1968 MLB amateur player draft.  He won the 1977 James P. Dawson Award for the best Yankees rookie in spring training camp. George appeared in 28 games with the Yankees hitting .296. He appeared in 2 games of the 1977 World Series against the Dodgers.

1951- The New York Yankees pick on the lowly St. Louis Browns for a 15-2 win at Sportsman's Park. Mickey Mantle has 4 RBIs including a 3-run HR in the 9th inning off of veteran hurler Satchel Paige. Browns starter Ned Garver (15-9) is the loser for the Browns.

1964- On ” Elston Howard Night” at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees take 2 games from the Boston Red Sox by the scores of 10-2 and 6-1. Joe Pepitone's 3 HRs, including a grand slam HR, and Roger Maris 6-singles lead the Yankees offense. Mickey Mantle hits MLB career HR number #447 in the opener and ties Babe Ruth's MLB career strikeout record (1,330) in the nightcap.

1965- Former Yankees OF Paul “Big Poison” Waner (1944-1945) passed away.
Paul Waner was at the end of his fine Hall Of Fame career, when the Yankees picked him up in 1944. He appeared in only 10 games for the Yankees, hitting just .143. He was elected to the Hall Of Fame in 1952. His brother Lloyd played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was nicked named “Little Poison”.

1966- Former Yankees reserve C Al DeVormer (1921-1922) passed away. (1891-1966).
Reserve C Al DeVormer hit .275 in 46 games with the New York Yankees, before being traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1923  along with cash for P George Pipgras and OF Harvey Hendrick.

1967- The Boston Red Sox tie an AL record it originally set on July 4,1905 by playing 29 innings in a doubleheader. Boston wins the 1st game against the Yankees by the score of 2-1, and then drops the nightcap in 20 innings by the score of 4-3. The Yankees winning P Fred Talbot has a single in 20th inning, off of Red Sox hurler Darrell Brandon, to set up Horace Clarke's game-winning single. The game lasts 5:15 and is the 3rd game this AL season of 18 innings or more for the New York Yankees.

1969- AL golden Glove 1B Joe Pepitone quits the New York Yankees after being fined $500 for leaving the bench during a game. He will return to the team, but he will be traded to the Houston Astros in the off-season for former Yankees minor league OF/1B Curt Blefary.

1970- Former Yankees All Star CF and MVP Mickey Mantle returns to the New York Yankees organization as MLB 1B coach.

1972- New York Yankees CF Bobby Murcer hits for the cycle against the Texas Rangers. He's the 1st Yankee player to hit for the cycle since Mickey Mantle in 1957. The next Yankees player to do this feat will be shortstop Tony Fernandez in 1995.

1973- New York Yankees C Thurman Munson gets a tainted 1st-inning hit as a pop fly drops between 2 California Angels infielders calling for it. It turns out to be the only hit allowed by the Angels starter Nolan Ryan as he beats the Yankees by the score of 5-0.

1977- The New York Yankees top the Kansas City Royals by the score of 5-3 on a 3-run pinch-hit HR in the 8th inning by 1B Chris Chambliss.

1978- Against the California Angels, the New York Yankees go into the record books by receiving 5 intentional passes in the 11-inning contest.

1985- In the New York Yankees 4-0 win over the California Angels, Don Baylor is hit by a pitch from Angels hurler Kirk McCaskill for the 190th time, breaking the AL record of 189 set by former AL star Minnie Minoso.

1996- The last-place California Angels defeat the New York Yankees by the score of 14-3, behind OF Garret Anderson's 7-runs batted in. Anderson has 2 doubles and a HR in the game.

1998- Derek Jeter hits his 17th HR of the 1998 American League season to establish a new mark for Yankee shortstops. The infielder also scores 4 times in an 11-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

August 30th

1905- Making his MLB debut, Ty Cobb doubles off of Highlander's Jack Chesbro in a 5-3, Tiger victory at Detroit's Bennett Park.

1906- Right-hander Slow Joe Doyle of the Highlanders becomes the 1st 20th century player to start out with 2 shutouts, when he beats the Nationals by the score of 5-0. Of his 23 lifetime victories, 7 will be shutouts. He is nicknamed "Slow" because of his time-consuming pace on the mound. The Yankees take the nightcap as well, winning by the score of 9-8, to begin a sweep of 5 doubleheaders in 6 days. They'll outscore their opponents 76-31.

1906-The Yankees 1B Hal Chase becomes the 1st franchise player to hit 3 triples in a game during a Yankee 9-8 victory over the Washington Senators.

1910- New York Yankees starter Tom Hughes pitches a no-hitter for 9 1/3 innings before giving up a hit to Indians' Harry Niles. Hughes then collapses, allowing 5 Tribe runs in the 11th inning to lose the game by the score of 5-0.

1917- Former Yankees P Charles “Red” Embree (1948) was born.
On December 11,1947, Red Embree was traded by the Cleveland Indians to the New York Yankees for OF Allie Clark. Red went 5-3 with the Yankees before being sent to the St. Louis Browns in 1948. On December 13,1948, Red was traded by the Yankees along with C Sherm Lollar, P Richard Starr and $100,000 to the Browns for C Roy Partee and P Fred Sanford.

1918- Former Yankees INF Billy “Bull” Johnson (1943,1946-1951) was born. (1918-2006)
Before 1936 AL Season, Billy Johnson was signed by the New York Yankees as an MLB amateur free agent. Billy was 1947 AL All Star team member. He appeared in 4 World Series with the Yankees.  He appeared in 735 games for the Yankees, hitting .275 with 45 HRs with 388 RBI’s. On May 14,1951, Billy was traded by the Yankees to the St. Louis Cardinals for 1B Don Bollweg and $15,000.

1922- After hitting HR No. 28 in the 1st inning, New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth argues too strongly over a called strike on his next AB,  he is thrown out of the game. He'll be suspended for the 5th time of the 1922 AL season, and is out for 3 days.

1925- Former Yankees OF George “Teddy” Wilson (1956) was born. (1925-1974).
On August 22,1956, George Wilson was selected off waivers by the Yankees from the New York Giants. He hit .167 in 11 games. Also George appeared in 1 game for the Yankees in the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1931- At Fenway Park, Ben Chapman and Lou Gehrig each have 4 hits and together total 9-RBIs as the Yankees roll over the Boston Red Sox by the score of 14-4. One of Gehrig's hits is a HR, his 37th, and 2 of Chapman's leave the park. Hal Rhyne has 4 hits for the Red Sox.

1939- New York Yankees rookie hurler Atley Donald pitches a baseball at 94.7 miles per hours to establish a new record for a fastball.

1941- Former Yankees reserve OF Archie Moore (1964-1965) was born.
Before the 1963 AL Season, the New York Yankees signed Archie Moore as an MLB amateur free agent. Archie appeared in 40 games for the 1964-1965 Yankees hitting .275.

1945- New York Yankees rookie hurler Floyd Bevans, 28 years old, retires the 1st 18 Red Sox batters before giving up a walk and a double to Bob Johnson, the only hit for the Boston Red Sox. Bevans wins the game by a score of 7-1, defeating Red Sox starter Boo Ferriss, who was trying for his 21st win of the 1945 AL season.

1956- Former Yankees P Roger Erickson (1982-1983) was born.
On May 12,1982, Roger Erickson was traded by the Minnesota Twins along with C Butch Wynegar to the New York Yankees for P John Pacella, INF Larry Milbourne, P Pete Filson, and cash. Roger went 4-6 in 21 games for the Yankees. On December 8,1983, Roger was traded by the Yankees along with 1B/DH Steve Balboni to the Kansas City Royals for P Mike Armstrong and minor league player Duane Dewey.

1961- Mickey Mantle connects for HR  #47 off the Minnesota Twins hurler Jim Kaat as the Yankees win the game by the score of 4-0. He'll hit HR #48 tomorrow, off of Twins hurler Jack Kralick, in the Twins 4-3 win over the Yankees.

1967- Former Yankees P Andy Cook (1993) was born.
The New York Yankees in the 11th round of the 1988 MLB amateur player draft drafted P Andy Cook. Andy appeared in 4 games for the 1993 Yankees, posting a 0-1 record. On August 31,1993, Andy was released by the Yankees.

1972- The New York Yankees obtained reliever Casey Cox from the Texas Rangers for P Jim Roland. A classic nothing for nothing trade.

1977- Against the New York Yankees, the Seattle Mariners tie the score, 5 -5, in the 8th inning, then lose the game in the 11th inning by the score of 6-5, when Mickey Rivers leads off the inning with a home run.

1986- Two Veteran Yankee hurlers Tommy John (43) and Joe Niekro (41) become the first 40+ pitchers since 1933 to start both ends of a doubleheader. John loses his start by the score of 1-0, while Joe Niekro pitches 5 innings for a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

1989- The New York Yankees send veteran slugger DH/1B Ken Phelps, hitting just .249, to Oakland A’s for minor league P Scott Holcomb.

1989- Former Yankees 1B/OF Joe Collins (1949-1957) passed away.
Before the 1939 AL Season, the New York Yankees signed Joe Collins as an MLB amateur free agent. In 10 seasons with the Yankees Joe hit .256, never really living up to the hitting promise that the Yankees had hoped for. Joe appeared in 7 World Series with the Yankees.  He was replaced by Bill Skowron as the regular Yankee 1st baseman in 1957. On March 20,1958, Joe was purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Yankees. Joe retired from MLB, turning down a $100,000 contract offer from the Phillies. He told the NYC media that he wanted to be remembered as a Yankee.

1996- Adding their 8th new player this month, the Yankees reacquired 3B Charlie Hayes from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a player to be named. This makes current Yankees 3B Wade Boggs, a platoon player and he angrily states, "I'll get my 3,000 MLB hit somewhere."

1997- New York Yankees starter David Wells strikes a familiar note as he threatens to punch out owner George Steinbrenner during a clubhouse argument. Reportedly, the argument began after the team's 7-2 loss to the Expos, when a play occurred that was similar to last year's ALCS. This time it was against the Yankees; Darrin Fletcher's gets a HR when a fan in RF reaches over and snagged the ball before Paul O'Neill could catch it. Wells voiced to Steinbrenner that extra security should be added in RF to prevent this sort of incident, George answered that Wells ought to stick to his pitching. When Wells said that Steinbrenner could trade him, the Yankees owner answered that no one wanted the lefty. It was then that Wells joined the ranks of earlier Yankee players, who have wanted to flatten the feisty owner since 1973.

2005- In the long tradition of the Yankees, All Star 3B Alex Rodriguez becomes only the 2nd right-handed batter in Yankees history to hit 40 HRs in a season. The Yankee's 3B joins Joe DiMaggio, who hit 46 HR s in 1937, making it the only time  "Joltin' Joe” reached the 40 HR mark in his MLB career.

August 31st

1916- Former Yankees reserve INF Ray Mack (1947) was born.
On December 6,1946, Ray Mack was traded by the Cleveland Indians along with C Sherman Lollar to Yankees for OF Hal Peck, P Al Gettel, and P Gene Bearden. Ray appeared in 1 game for the Yankees in 1947, before being sent to the Chicago White Sox.

1925- New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth meets with New York Yankees team owner Jacob Ruppert, he learns that the owner is 100% behind Yankees Manager Miller Huggins suspension and fining of Ruth. He announces that Ruth will remain suspend until he apologizes to Huggins, and until such time as Huggins decides to lift the player’s suspension. The $5,000 fine is the largest ever given by a MLB team to one of it’s own players, would stick.  It was later refunded to Babe Ruth in 1929 after Miller Huggins death.

1929- The New York Yankees open a home stand by beating the Boston Red Sox by a score of 10-3.  Babe Ruth hits HR No. 43 and leads his Yankees teammate Lou Gehrig by 2 HRs. The Yankees with an 89-37 record, they now lead the 2nd-place Philadelphia A's by 17 games.

1931- Against the Senators' hurler Lloyd Brown, Lou Gehrig belts his 2nd grand slam HR in 3 days, but the Washington Senators hang onto 2nd place in AL by beating the Yankees, by the score of 6-5.

1936- Yankees Manager Joe McCarthy consents to Dixie Walker as a temporary substitute while the Chicago White Sox patch up Mike Kreevich, who is spiked on a play. Walker runs for Kreevich but does not replace him in the outfield.

1942- The New York Yankees obtained veteran OF Roy Cullenbine from the Washington Senators on waivers. Roy will hit .364 as part-time OF and pinch hitter for the 1942 Yankees.

1942- Former Yankees minor league P Tom Dukes was born.
Before 1962 AL season, the Yankees signed Tom Dukes as an MLB amateur free agent. Tom never pitched for the Yankees at MLB Level. On June 16,1965, Tom was traded by the Yankees to the Milwaukee Braves for veteran reliever Bobby Tiefenauer.  At the time of the trade, Tom was pitching for the Richmond Virginians (International League, AAA) for the Yankees.

1945- The Washington Senators again muff a chance to go into 1st place in the AL, by dropping a pair of games to the New York Yankees by the scores of 3-2 and 3-1. In between games, Nats hurler Bert Shepard receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for his military service in World War II. Shepard lost his leg in combat.

1948- At Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers score 4 runs in the 8th inning but the St. Louis Browns come back with 5 runs in the 9th inning off of Yankees closer Joe Page to make it close, but the Yankees prevail to hold on to a 10-9 victory. Yankees1B Tommy Henrich has a HR and an unassisted Double Play to help starter Allie Reynolds to the win the game. The Yankees remain a game behind the Boston Red Sox.

1953- Former Yankees reserve INF Juan Bernhardt  (1976) was born.
On August 1,1970, Juan Bernhardt was signed by the New York Yankees as an MLB amateur free agent. He appeared in 10 games for the Yankees in 1976, hitting just .190. On November 5,1976, Juan was drafted by the Seattle Mariners from the Yankees as the 20th pick in the 1976 AL player expansion draft.

1954- The Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees by the score of 6-1 to record their 26th win of the month, tying the American League mark set by the 1931 Philadelphia A's.

1954- Former Yankees OF/DH Claudell Washington (1986-1988,1990) was born.
On June 30,1986, Claudell Washington was traded by the Atlanta Braves along with minor league INF Paul Zuvella to the New York Yankees for veteran OF/1B  Ken Griffey Sr. and INF Andre Robertson. His best Yankees season was in 1988, when he hit .308.  After the 1988 AL season, Claudell left the Yankees for MLB free agency, signing with the California Angels. On April 29, 1990, Claudell was traded by the Angels along with P Rich Monteleone to the Yankees for OF/DH Luis Polonia. He finished his 17-year MLB career with the Yankees in 1990, appearing in only 33 games, just batting .162.

1956- President Dwight D. Eisenhower is in attendance at Griffth Stadium in Washington, D. C., as Jim Lemon of the Washington Senators slugs 3 consecutive HRs in a night game against the New York Yankees, but the Bronx Bombers still win the game by a score of 6-4.

1966- New York Yankees veteran AL All Star 2B Bobby Richardson (1955-1966), age 31, announces his retirement, as an MLB player.

On June 12,1953, Bobby Richardson was signed by the New York Yankees as an MLB amateur free agent. Bobby would become the Yankees regular 2B in 1959, hitting .301. He was the only Yankees regular to hit over .300 that season. He would be an AL All Star 2B in 1957, but didn’t play in the game; he was named to the 1959,1962-1966 AL teams. He hit .307 in 7 World Series for the Yankees. With his best World Series being in 1960, winning the World Series MVP Award, after hitting .367 with 1 HR and 12 RBI’s. Bobby would hit .302 in 1962. He would lead the AL in singles in 1961-1962 and 1964. Bobby led the AL in Sac hits with 20 in 1962 and 16 in 1964. Bobby won the AL Golden Glove for 2nd base from 1961-1965. In 1963, he won the MLB Lou Gehrig Memorial Award.

1977- New York Yankees reliever Sparky Lyle records his 3rd win in 3 games, all won on late-inning HRs by Bronx Bombers. Graig Nettles' 2nd HR of the game gives the New York Yankees, a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

1981- Former Yankees minor league P Ramon Ramirez was born.
Ramon Ramirez was originally signed by the Texas Rangers and was released. Then Ramon pitched in Japan. Ramirez was posted via the Posting System in February 2003 to the Yankees for a total of $300,050. In his 1st year with the Yankees' organization, he went 3-10 with a 4.43 ERA in 20 games with the A Tampa Yankees, AA Trenton Thunder, and the AAA Columbus Clippers. He was named the number 5 ranked pitcher in the Yankees organization by Baseball America that year. During Ramirez's 2nd year with the Yankees, he started out at Columbus, struggling going 0-3 with a 8.50 ERA in 4 starts, as a result, he was sent down to Trenton where he went 4-6 with a 4.62 ERA in 18 starts. He had the top K/per 9 IP ratio among all Eastern League starters that year with 10.1K/9IP. Again, Ramirez opened up the 2005 season with Columbus, but struggled again going 1-3 with a 5.33 ERA in 6 games. He was sent back to Trenton, where he went 6-5 with a 3.84 ERA in 15 games. The Yankees traded Ramirez to the Colorado Rockies along with minor league P Eduardo Sierra on June 28, 2005 for P Shawn Chacon. He never appeared with the Yankees at the MLB level.

1993- The St. Louis Cardinals traded veteran All Star closer Lee Smith to the New York Yankees in exchange for P Rich Batchelor. Smith would go 0-0 in 8 games with 3 saves for the  1993 Yankees. He left the Yankees for MLB free agency after the 1993 AL season, signing with Eastern Division rivals, the Baltimore Orioles.

1993- Former Yankees OF Jesse Hill (1935) passed away.
On January 19,1932, Jesse Hill was traded by Hollywood Stars (Pacific Coast League) to the New York Yankees for OF George Quellich, P Myles Thomas and cash. Jesse Hill appeared in 107 games for the Yankees in 1935, hitting .293. On January 17,1936, he was traded by the Yankees along with P Jimmie DeShong to the Washington Senators for P Bump Hadley and OF Roy Johnson.

1994- Former Yankees C Mike Garbark (1944-1945) passed away.
Catcher Mike Garbark was a member of the New York Yankees in 1944-1945. He showed a lot of hustle, hitting 7 triples in 475 at-bats. His brother Bob Garbark was in the majors as a catcher at the same time, and the 2 brothers each hit .261 in 1944. Mike appeared in 149 games for the Yankees, finishing with a .249 BA.

1995- New York Yankees' OF Paul O'Neill homers in his 1st three at bats. He drives home 8 runs in leading the Bronx Bombers to an 11-6 win over the California Angels.

1997- In front of a crowd of 55,707 fans, Don Mattingly's Yankees uniform number 23 is added to the list of retired numbers on the wall at Yankee Stadium's Monument Park.

2009- Andy Pettitte of the New York Yankees retires the first 20 Baltimore Orioles batters, he faces before an error and a hit spoil his bid for immortality. New York wins the game easily, by the score of 5-1.

September 1st

1903- Former Yankees P Foster “Eddie “ Edwards (1930) was born. Eddie Edwards was 0-0 in 2 games for the Yankees in 1930.

1905- The New York Yankees sell veteran P Jack Powell (1903-1904) to the St. Louis Browns for cash. Jack Powell had won 23 games in 1903, before slipping to 8-13 mark in 1904.

1906- The Highlanders win their 6th game in 3 days from Washington Senators‚ sweeping their third straight doubleheader‚ 5-4 and 5-3‚ for an AL record. Three days later‚ they will move into 1st place‚ sweeping the Boston Red Sox by scores of 7-0 and 1-0 for their 5th straight doubleheader sweep‚ a MLB   record.

1920- New York Yankees submarine hurler Carl Mays shuts out the St. Louis Browns by the score of 3-0 on 4 hits for the Yankees.

1927- Former Yankees MLB pitching coach and minor League manger Cloyd Boyer was born.
Cloyd Boyer was the oldest of the three-Boyer brothers to play in the MLB. He pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City A’s. Boyer was a coach for the Richmond Virginians (AAA) in 1962. He was the Yankees minor league pitching coach in 1963-1964,1974-1976. Boyer scouted for the Yankees from 1964 to 1974, he replaced minor league managers in mid-season in 1962,1963 and 1968. He was a MLB pitching coach for the Yankees in 1977. Also he worked for the Toronto Blue Jays organization.

1928- In Washington, D.C. at Griffith Stadium‚ Republican presidential candidate Herbert Hoover looks on as "Approximately 99 % of the spectators wore their straw hats‚ hoping the Senators would give them a chance to get excited and hurl them away" (NY Times). Alas‚ the Yankees win the game by a score of 8-3. Yankees starter Waite Hoyt is the winner and beneficiary of Bob Meusel's 4-for-4 hitting. Meusel has 3 RBIs for the Yankees. Garland Braxton takes the loss for the Senators.

1930- A Labor Day crowd of 72‚000 fans packs Yankee Stadium to see the World Champion Philadelphia A's split a double header with the Yankees. The A's take the opener by the score of 3-2‚ with reliever Lefty Grove striking out Yankees slugger Babe Ruth with 2 men on to end the game. Babe Ruth drives in a run in the nightcap for a 2-0 Yankees win. Yankees starter Red Ruffing pitches his second 2-hitter in 2 weeks to beat A’s starter George Earnshaw.

1931- Yankees 1B Lou Gehrig hits his 3rd grand slam HR in 5 days and his 6th HR in consecutive games when he connects in a 5-1 second-game win over the Boson Red Sox. The blast‚ his 40th HR of the season‚ comes in the 3rd inning off of Ed Morris. Gehrig connects in the opener’s 11-3 win against Milt Gaston‚ belting his 39th HR in the 7th inning. 1944- Desperate times call for desperate measures. The Washington Senators start semi-pro pitcher Jug Thesenga‚ who holds the New York Yankees scoreless for 5 innings before the roof caves in. But the Senators rally to win the game by a score of 10-7‚ behind reliever Roger Wolff‚ who snaps his personal 11-game losing streak.

1953- Chicago White Sox veteran hurler Virgil Trucks surrenders a HR to Mickey Mantle in the 7th inning that proves to be the game-winner‚ as the White Sox lose to the New York Yankees by a score of 3-2.

1957- The New York Yankees obtained veteran NL hurler Sal “The Barber” Maglie from the Brooklyn Dodgers for $25,000 cash and 2 minor league players, but he is ineligible for 1957 World Series play. 1963- New York Yankees CF Tom Tresh joins teammate Mickey Mantle among the 4 AL and 5 NL players to hit HRs left- and right-handed in 1 game. The Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 5-4. A tired Mickey Mantle‚ who had partied the night before‚ adds a pinch HR in the 8th inning‚ jumping on the 1st pitch from Orioles veteran hurler Mike McCormick.

1972- New York  Yankees Ace starter Mel Stottlemyre hurls a 4-hitter to stop the Chicago White Sox by the score of 4-0. Yankees Rookie OF Charlie Spikes has 2 hits in his MLB debut‚ drives in a run and saves a run with a sparkling catch in right field.

1986- The Oakland A's rookie OF Jose Canseco goes 4-for-5 and hits his 28th HR to become the 1st MLB player with 100 RBIs this season. The A’s defeat the New York Yankees by the score of 9-8.

1990- The 3rd inside-the-park grand slam HR of the 1990 AL season is hit by Boston's Mike Greenwell off of New York Yankees hurler Greg Cadaret‚ as the Red Sox beat visiting Yankees at Fenway Park by the score of 15-1. Greenwell's grounder eludes Yankees OF Jesse Barfield in the RF corner: Barfield's shoe-top miss on August 14th gave Luis Polonia his slam. The last MLB season with 3 inside-the-park slams was in 1947. Greenwell's only other inside-the-park slam was also off Cadaret‚ in 1989 at Fenway Park. The Red Sox batters jumps on Yankees starter Andy Hawkins who lasted 1/3  of an inning. Hawkins has now pitched a total of one inning in 3 starts at Fenway Park and given up 18 runs (ERA 162.00).

1997- Before 50‚869 fans at the Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia‚ the Phillies defeat the New York Yankees by the score of 5-1‚ behind starter Curt Schilling‚ who fans 16 Yankee batters in 8 innings of action‚ he does not walk a man. The Phillies will win the next day to sweep the series with the defending 1996 World Champs.

September 2nd

1908- Former All Star Yankees P Monte Pearson (1936-1940) was born. (1909-1978.) 
In 1935, Monte Pearson was acquired by the New York Yankees in trade that sent P Johnny Allen to the Cleveland Indians. In 1938, Monte pitched the 1st no-hitter at Yankee Stadium. He pitched for the Yankees from 1936-1940. His best Yankees season was in 1936, when he went 19-7. He made the American League All Star team. He appeared in the 1936-1939 World Series with the Yankees going 4-0. His Yankees pitching career record was 63-27. He was sold to the Cincinnati Reds for $20,000 and INF Don Lang in December of 1940.

1912- In a rainy doubleheader at the Polo Grounds, Boston Red Sox ace Joe Wood tops the Yankees in the nightcap by the score of 1-0, for his 30th win of the season and his 13th straight victory. It is Wood's 8th shutout and 2nd in a row. Boston takes the opening game, by the score of 2-1 to finish the year in New York with 10 wins in 10 tries. With 3 wins last year, and 5 wins in their 1st 5 road games with New York in 1913, Boston ties the MLB record for most consecutive wins on the road against one team (18).

1922- New York Yankees starter Carl Mays wins his AL record 23rd straight game over the Philadelphia A’s. Although the A’s knock him out of the box for the 1st time in his win streak. He leaves with 1-out in the 6th inning with the Yankees winning by the score of 7-2. The Yankees prevail to win the game, by the score of 11-6, in game 1, but the A's win the nightcap by the score of 4-0, behind starter Bob Hasty.

1928- The Washington Senators top the New York Yankees by a score of 2-0, as starter Fred Marberry does it all, shutting down the Yankees and driving in both Nats runs. Yankees OF Bob Meusel's hitting streak is stopped at 6 straight games. The New York Yankees AL lead is now 1-1/2 games over the Philadelphia A's, winners of an exhibition game in Lycoming, PA.

1932- The New York Yankees keep their scoring streak alive by scoring in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat the Washington Senators by the score of 1-0.  Lou Gehrig triples off of P Firpo Marberry to score Babe Ruth for the winning run

1933- Former Yankee 1B/OF Marvin  “Marvelous Marv” Throneberry  (1955,1958-1959) was born. (1933-1994)
In 1952, the New York Yankees signed Marvin “Marv” Throneberry as a MLB free agent. He appeared in 1 game in 1955 for the Yankees. He would win a triple crown while playing with the Yankees Denver Bears AAA farm club under Manager Ralph Houk. He would hit 118 HRs in 3 years with the Bears. He made the American Association All Star team. He joined the Yankees in 1958, as a back up to 1B Bill  Skowron. He appeared in 1 game of the 1958 World Series against the Milwaukee Braves.  During the 1959 AL season, he had a chance to play 1B on a regular basis, when Bill Skowron broke his arm.  Marv hit .240 with 8 HRs and 22 RBI’s. Like the other younger players on the Yankees (Jerry Lumpe, Bobby Richardson, Norm Siebern and others) Marv was verbally abused by Yankees Manager Casey Stengel, who picked on the young Yankee players that AL season.  Marv was packaged in the Roger Maris trade with the Kansas City A’s in December of 1959. Later he played for the Baltimore Orioles, before finishing up with the New York Mets, finishing with a MLB career BA of .237. He later appeared in the great Miller Beer commercials of the 1980’s. His brother Faye played the OF for several teams in the AL during the 1950-1960’s, making them one of many brother combos of that baseball era.

1952- New York Yankee hurlers Tom Gorman and Ewell “The Whip” Blackwell shut out the Boston Red Sox by the scores of 5-0 and 4-0 in a doubleheader.

1955- Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle celebrate Billy Martin's return from active duty in the US Army. Whitey Ford throws 6 innings of no-hit ball against the Washington Senators before Carlos Paula spoils it in the 7th inning with Nats's only hit. The Yankees win the game by the score of 4-2, as Mantle hits his 36th HR, a 3-run shot. Mantle is 10 HRs ahead of his AL rivals Tigers’ Al Kaline and Red Sox Ted Williams. The Yankees stay a half game behind the Chicago White Sox, who beat the 3rd-place Cleveland Indians. Billy Martin will hit .300 in September, the Yankees will go on a 17-6 tear to win the 1955 AL pennant by 3 games.

1958- At Yankee Stadium, New York Yankees snaps a scoreless tie with the Boston Red Sox, when Bronx Bomber sluggers Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle crash back-to-back 6th inning HRs off of P Dave Sisler. Mantle has hit 3 HRs this season off of P Dave Sisler. The Yankees win the game by a score of 6-1. Mantle, now with 38 HRs leads the 1958 AL HR Crown race. Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra will hit back-to-back HRs, 12 times together, and homer in the same game, 50 times before they are through as active Yankees players.

1960- Baltimore Orioles starter Milt Pappas stops the New York Yankees on 3-hits, with 2 hits by Tony Kubek to give Baltimore, a 5-0 lead in the 1st of a 3-game series. The Orioles now trail the 1st place Yankees by .003.

1960- Former Yankees reserve INF Rex Hudler (1984-1985) was born.
Rex Hudler was a 1st round draft pick by the New York Yankees in 1978. He played in 29 games for the Yankees in 1984-1985, before being traded along with P Rich Bordi to the Baltimore Orioles for OF Gary Ward and a player to be named later.

1961- Against Detroit's Yankees Killer starter Frank Lary, Roger Maris doubles and takes 3B on a misplay. Mickey Mantle, hurting from a pulled muscle in his forearm, lays down a perfect drag bunt to score Roger. Maris then blasts HRs in his next two-trips to the plate, and Elston Howard adds a
3-run HR for a 7-2 win over the Tigers.

1965- Mickey Mantle hits a 1st inning HR with 2-runners on as the Yankees score 5 runs on their way to an 8-1 win over the Angels. Yankees veteran All Star starter Whitey Ford is the winner.

1967- The Washington Senator's hurler Bob Priddy loses his 1-0 lead to the New York Yankees, when Mickey Mantle clouts a 2-run pinch-hit HR in the 8th inning as the Yankees win the game by the score of 2-1. Yankees starter, Mel Stottlemyre is the winner, allowing only 6-hits with no walks. For Mickey Mantle, it is his 14th game-winning hit of the 1967 AL season, 8 of them were HRs.

1969- New York Yankees Manager Ralph Houk signs a new three-year contract with the team at $65,000 a season, the highest managerial salary in either league. Yankees veteran All Star 1B Joe Pepitone is reinstated to the team.

1978- New York Yankees starter Ed Figueroa wins his 14th game of the 1978 AL season. Reggie Jackson and Chris Chambliss, each hit a HR, as the Yankees dump the Seattle Mariners by the score of 6-2.  The victory moves the Yankees within 5 1/2 games of the 1st place Boston Red Sox in the AL East. Reggie Jackson’s 20th HR makes him the 19th player in MLB history to hit 20 or more HRs for 11 straight seasons

1996- New York Yankees veteran starter David Cone makes a dramatic return to the mound after his May operation to remove an aneurysm in his pitching arm by pitching 7 no-hit innings. The Yankees beat the Oakland A's by the score of 5-0, as Mariano Rivera goes 2-innings of relief, gives up one-hit to Jose Herrera in the 8th inning. David Cone's remarkable return sends veteran hurler Kenny Rogers to the Yankees bullpen.

2001- The New York Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 1-0, as starter Mike Mussina comes within a strike of hurling a perfect game. Red Sox PH Carl Everett's 2-out, 2-strike single in the 9th inning ruins Mussina's gem. It is the 3rd time in his MLB career that the “Moose” has taken a perfect game into the 8th inning. The Yankees score the only run of the contest in the top of the 9th inning on Enrique Wilson's double. Opposing Red Sox hurler David Cone, former Yankee, who takes the loss, is the most recent pitcher to toss a perfect game. The Yankees sweep of the Red Sox was the 1st history by a team that did not score in the first 7-innings of any of the games. In a move that enrages many players, Red Sox GM Dan Duquette abruptly relieves P coach John Cumberland of his duties just minutes after the game. A visibly angry Cumberland, who was promoted from bullpen coach to pitching coach last month, when Joe Kerrigan became manager, said Duquette told him he was being reassigned to the team's training facility in Fort Myers, Fla.” I'm not going,” Cumberland said. “That's official, that's for damn sure. That's OK. We've had a lot of good people leave this organization, and now it's going to be me because I'm not going to be reassigned.”

September 3rd

1906- New York Yankees Kid Elberfeld, the hotheaded, “Tabasco Kid,” assaults Umpire Silk O'Loughlin. He is forcibly removed by NYC police in the 1st game of a doubleheader, a New York's 4-3 win over the Philadelphia A’s. In the 2nd game, Yankees base runner Willie Keeler collides with Shortstop Lave Cross trying to field a ground ball, and 2-runs score. O'Loughlin sees no interference, a call so hotly disputed by A's captain Harry Davis that, after 8-minutes of arguing, the umpire forfeits the game to Yankees. For New York, it is a MLB record 5th straight doubleheader sweep in 5 consecutive days.

1921- Powered by Babe Ruth's 50th HR and the pitching of starter Carl Mays, the New York Yankees down the Washington Senators by the score of 9–3 at Griffith Stadium.

1927- The Philadelphia A’s starter Lefty Grove pitches his only shutout of the 1927 AL season beating the New York Yankees by the score of 1-0.

1934- Labor Day doubleheaders define the standings for the final AL pennant surge. Detroit Tigers are rained out in Chicago, hold a 5-game lead over the New York Yankees, who split a pair with the Philadelphia A's. Yankees starter Lefty Gomez wins his 24th game of the 1934 AL season and 10th straight game in the opener, and the A’s slugger Jimmy Foxx hits his 40th HR of the 1934 AL season in the nightcap.

1939- When Babe Dahlgren strikes out while being given an intentional walk and George Selkirk and Joe Gordon try to steal home on successive pitches by trotting to the plate, Boston Red Sox fans throw a barrage of garbage onto playing field at Fenway Park to protest the Yankees making deliberate outs to take advantage of the 6:30 PM Sunday curfew. Umpire Cal Hubbard rules the Boston crowd's action makes it impossible to continue the game and awards the game as a forfeit to the Yankees with a 9-0 “official” score, but AL President Will Harridge subsequently overrules him and fines the Yankees for their tactics.

1947- At Fenway Park in Boston, Tommy Henrich and Joe DiMaggio lead the way with 4-hits each as the Yankees bang out a total 18-hits, all singles in defeating the Red Sox by a score of 11-2.

1951- Newly acquired veteran hurler Johnny Sain from the Boston Braves, tosses a 5-hitter to beat the Philadelphia A's by the score of 3-1. The A's top the Yankees in the 2nd game, winning by the score of 3- 2.

1952- Philadelphia A’s  starter Harry Byrd, one-hits the New York Yankees winning the game by the score of 3-0.

1954- The New York Yankees snap Tribe starter Bob Lemon's 11-game win streak to beat the Cleveland Indians by the score of 3-2 and move 3 ½ games from 1st place. Mickey Mantle's gigantic blast into the RF upper deck in the 6th inning, started the Yankees scoring.

1954- The New York Yankee purchased veteran P Tommy Byrne from Seattle Rainers (PCL) for an undisclosed amount of cash and other considerations. He will go 16-5 in 1955 for the Yankees. Tommy will end his Yankees pitching career with a 72-40 mark (1940,1946-1951,1954-1957).

1958- The New York Yankees spot the Boston Red Sox, a 5-3 lead before Mickey Mantle HRs in the 8th inning. Then Yogi Berra cracks a 3-run HR in the 9th inning to win it by a score of 8-5. Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, each have 85 RBIs for the 1958 AL season.

1960- The Baltimore Orioles hand New York a 2nd straight shut out loss, winning the game by the score of 2-0 and replacing the Yankees in 1st place in the AL by a game. Brooks Robinson has both RBIs to back starter Jack Fisher's 7-hitter. During the game at Memorial Stadium, home plate Umpire Larry Napp is struck 3-times by foul balls. Charley Berry finishes the game behind the plate, as Larry Napp is carried off the field.

1961- After taking the 1st of 2 games against the Detroit Tigers, Yankees are down by the score of 5-4 in the 9th inning, when Mickey Mantle ties the game with his 2nd HR of the day. Elston Howard wins it with a 3-run HR drive into the LF stands and the Tigers leave town 4 1/2 games in back of the Yankees. Mickey Mantle is now at 50 HR mark, while teammate Roger Maris is at 53 HR mark, they are 1st teammates in MLB history to hit 50 HRs in the same MLB season.

1963- Former Yankees P Eric Plunk (1989-1991) was born.
The New York Yankees drafted Eric Plunk in 1981 in 4th round of the MLB amateur player. He was traded to the Oakland A’s in 1984 along with pitchers Tim Birtas, Jay Howell, Jose Rojo and OF Stan Javier for A’s All Star OF Rickey Henderson, Bert Bradley and cash.  He returned to the Yankees in 1989 from the A’s along with P Greg Cadaret, OF Louis Polonia for Yankees OF Rickey Henderson. 1970- Former Yankees reserve INF Craig Wilson (2006) was born.
Craig Wilson was obtained from Pittsburgh Pirates for P Shaun Chacon during the 2006 AL season.

1973- After 11 years at the helm of the New York Yankees (944-806 .539), long-time Manager Ralph Houk resigns as the New York Yankees skipper. The 'Major' will manage the Detroit Tigers next season.

1978- In the greatest relief performance of the season, flame-thrower Rich Gossage enters the game in the top of 9th inning with Seattle Mariners runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, with the Yankees clinging to a 4-3 lead. Gossage proceeds to throw 11 pitches and strikeouts the side. The win enabled the Yankees to keep pace with the 1st place Boston Red Sox, 5 1/2 games out of 1st place in the AL East.

1988- Oakland Closer Dennis Eckersley sets an A's team record with his 37th save of the 1988 AL season in Oakland's 5-4 win over the New York Yankees. Eckersley will save 45 games this season, 1 shy of Yankees closer Dave Righetti's MLB record.

1990- Former Yankees reliever Marshall  “Sheriff” Bridges (1962-1963) passed away. (1931-1990)

Marshall Bridges was a former Negro League star, who was signed by the New York Giants in 1953. The New York Yankees obtained Marshall from the Cincinnati Reds in the fall of 1961 for reserve C Jesse Gonder.  He went 8-2 in 52 games with 18 saves in 1962. He appeared in 1962 World Series against the San Francisco Giants, allowing the 1st grand slam HR ever hit to a NL player in a World Series, Giants 2B Chuck Hiller. In November of 1963, he was sold to the Washington Senators.

1990- Chicago White Sox Closer Bobby Thigpen sets a MLB record with his 47th save as Chicago defeats the Kansas City Royals by the score of 4-2. The White Sox reliever breaks New York Yankees Dave Righetti's closer mark of 46 saves established in 1986.

1995- The New York Yankees drop a 10-9 decision to the Oakland A’s as shortstop Tony Fernandez hits for the cycle. Fernandez scores 3-runs and has 3 RBI’s for Yankees. The last Yankee player to hit for the cycle was Bobby Murcer in 1972.

2001- At the Sky Dome in Toronto, the Yankees beat the Blue Jays by the score of 7-5 by scoring 2 runs off of reliever Billy Koch in the 9th inning. Mendoza picks up his 6th save while Mark Wohlers gets his 1st victory of the 2001 AL season. The Yankees hit 5 doubles during the game.

2008- Instant replay is used for the 1st time in a MLB game. Alex Rodriguez homers to left off of Tampa Bay Rays closer Troy Percival in the 9th inning as part of an 8-4 Yankees victory.  AL Umpire Brian Runge calls it a HR and has his call upheld upon review.

2009- Yankees C Jorge Posada hits his 20th homer of the 2009 AL season, as he drives in 4 runs as New York defeats the Toronto blue Jays by the score of 7-5. The Yankees now have 7 players with 20 or more homers on the year, matching a record set by three other teams. Derek Jeter currently has 17 home runs and may yet lead the Bronx Bombers to a new record.

Joe   Pepitone's 3 HRs, including a grand slam Home Run, along with Roger Maris six-singles lead the Bronx Bombers offense. Mickey Mantle hits MLB career Home  Run number #447 in the opener then he ties Babe Ruth's MLB career  strikeout record (1,330)  in the nightcap.

August 31, 1977- New  York Yankees Closer Sparky Lyle records his 3rd win in 3 games, all  won on late-inning Home Runs by the  Bronx Bombers. Graig Nettles' second Home Run of the  game gives the New York Yankees, a 5-4 victory over the Seattle  Mariners.

1955 New York Yankees; Billy Martin returns from the Service

September 2, 1955 -New York Yankee teammates  Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle celebrate Billy Martin's return from  active duty in the US Army. Whitey Ford throws 6 innings of no-hit ball  against the Washington Senators before Carlos Paula spoils it in the 7th  inning with Nats's only hit. The Yankees win the game by the score of  4-2, as Mickey Mantle hits his 36th HR, a 3-run shot. Mantle is 10 HRs ahead of  his American League rivals Detroit Tigers’ RF Al Kaline and Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams. The New York Yankees  stay a half game behind the Chicago White Sox, who beat the 3rd-place  Cleveland Indians. Billy Martin will hit .300 in September, the Yankees  will go on a 17-6 tear to win the 1955 American League pennant by 3 games.
