Joe should have been "retired" 15 years ago. PSU used him for their own benefit, and Joe stayed because he got to keep his celeb status as a icon. I have no pity for them. They either tried to cover it up, or they were inept. Either way, children suffered at the hands of a monster under their roof. Good riddance.
He didn't do anything illegal. He followed government law and reported the allegations to his superiors. That was his only legal obligation and he did that. Morally though, that's where he has fault. You can't go to jail just because you did something immoral.
There are others at PSU who did worse than Paterno did. PSU just fired him to make it seem like they care. People higher up then Paterno have known this for 9-10 years and didn't do anything. That shows that PSU hasn't really cared all too much for the most part. Now they everything has publically came to light, PSU suddenly acts as if they care.
This was swept under the rug, not just by Paterno (though he did what he was legally obligated), but by high up people than Paterno.
PSU knew that if these allegations came to light, even at the time the acts were first reported, the university would take a huge hit in many ways. Now the allegations have came to light with it being reported and PSU is trying to use Paterno as their scap goat. Truth is, PSU is now in 10x deeper water than what they would have been had they reported things when they first came to light. All that is going on now is finger pointing.
