Red Sox select Bobby Valentine as manager

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff  November 29, 2011 07:03 PM

Robert John Valentine will be the 45th manager of the Boston Red Sox, the team selecting him within the last few hours.

No contract is in place. But Mike Lynch of Channel 5 is reporting that the Red Sox have a "verbal agreement" with Valentine to be their next manager.

Major league sources told Globe colleague Nick Cafardo just prior to that report that Valentine would be the next manager but a deal was not done.

Red Sox team sources, who have been fairly open about the process so far, would not comment on Lynch's report.

Valentine, 61, could be introduced as soon as tomorrow or Thursday.

More to come.

He's a good baseball guy.  I'll have a much easier time learning to hate Valentine than I did the classy Francona.  lol

I can't stand the guy. I might learn to hate the Red Sox just because of Valentine

Valentine knows alot about baseball. He can be entertaining. He's slightly charismatic. Why don't I like the guy? Why do I always listen to him for three minites and then he does something and I change the channel and say, "why'd you watch him? You don't like him." Valentine is the guy at the cookout you have a laugh with and listen to him tell a story and suddenly you have this urge to flip his hamburger in the air or burp just as he giving the punchline. I hope Bobby does well......NOT.

So now any team (including us) who wants Darvish will have to spend more than they originally intended. V knows him from managing in Japan, has praised him often, and probably will try to convince the Sox management to go all out to get him if Darvish indeed gets posted.  The first victory over V's Sox should be getting Darvish ourselves.

Their rotation is filled with signing mistakes of Lackey and Dice-K and they have Beckett and Lester as well and if Buchholz comes back healthy well then that's their starting 5.  No way the Red Sox even look at Darvish.

Wonder if he still has his mustache ready for Boston. They'll like him now but just wait..........  The NY press will love him now, too.
