Yankees In Serious Discussions With Raul Ibanez
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 6 at 6:12pm CST]
The Yankees are in serious discussions with free agent Raul Ibanez, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. The ACES client is willing to take less money to play for the Yankees.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported earlier tonight that the Yankees could add a left-handed hitter such as Ibanez, Johnny Damon or Hideki Matsui within a week. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said last week that he would like to see GM Brian Cashman add a bat before Opening Day.

Ibanez posted a .245/.289/.419 line with 20 home runs in 575 plate appearances as the Phillies' everyday left fielder last year. The 39-year-old could provide the Yankees with an option at designated hitter or in the corner outfield positions. He owns a .286/.351/.488 line against right-handed pitching in 16 MLB seasons and appears to be a possible platoon partner for Andruw Jones.

I'll take him.  He has good career numbers against righty pitching, and that's how he'll be used.

Would you pick Damon or Ibanez? I would preferably want Johnny Back...but I don't hate the idea of Ibanez.

Damon was my 1st choice all along, but Ibanez has always hit righties pretty good. He was my 2nd choice. Damon gives you a lot more on the basepaths, but Ibanez can still play a corner outfield spot if needed.

Rosenthal's also reporting that Ibanez is willing to take less money to play for the Yankees than he would have gotten elsewhere.  Maybe if Johnny felt the same way he'd be here instead.

Not sure Ibanez has anything left. If they sign him, we have to hope his off-season work with Jaramillo pays off.

Missing out on one of these guys won't impact our season in the least, can't we hold out and try to deal for a versatile infielder that swings a potent bat against righties?  I think we can pull a few more wins out of having 12 or 13 pitchers on the club rather than over pay for a declining veteran bat.

Ibanez still only managed a .307 OBP against righties (against lefties you don't want to ask) we should just pass.

Wasn't that what Cashman wanted to do to begin with?  Apparently he couldn't get a trade done or they wouldn't be going the FA route.  They could try Ibanez until July and see if a better option becomes available via trade then.  He'll probably also act as their 5th outfielder meaning Dickerson's days are numbered.  He's out of options too.

I dont see how this helps us. We dont need a 6th outfielder, we need more infield help and a lefty stick....Chavez anyone? or a like player.

Dickerson did little against righties in a terribly small sample last year but his career splits are not bad compared to the guys we are looking at, I'd prefer platooning Dickerson until something better comes along.  At least it wouldn't be an ugly divorce and he wouldn't be granted a prolonged slump due to his name and contract.  When we do cut Dickerson I don't think he'll be missed.
