This is very strange. With all the starting candidates I wouldn't think the Yanks would need to add another especially for $2.5M. That's quite a risk to take when they were crying poor about not wanting to spend for a DH.

They must be really concerned about the starting pitching. Although, I did say in another thread that it would only take Andy until Memorial Day to be better than Kuroda or Garcia. maybe the Yanks feel the same way. We shall see!

This is not strange at all. Raul Ibanez was had for only 1.1 mil. By adding 2.5, the Yankees spent a total of 3.6 mil for two veteran players, with one being Andy Pettitte. LOL...that's still 1.4 mil short of what was rumored Johnny Damon was asking for.

The Yanks supposedly only had a couple of million to spend filling out the roster which included a DH. I'm not making the DH a big issue, just mentioning that because the Yanks pretty much said they were tapped out. Now they spend $2.5M on a retired pitcher when they already have 6 starters and 4 or 5 kids in the minors. I like Andy, and as I said a few weeks ago, if he could back into shape he probably would be better than Kuroda or Garcia.

What I meant by strange, is this whole scenario. From a purely objective point of view it doesn't make any sense to sign Pettitte unless the Yanks know something. Maybe Andy has been working out and is actually in good form and just needs some live competition. Neither Kuroda nor Garcia can be traded until June so that will create a bit of a log jam.

UPDATE, 2:01 p.m.: Cashman just spoke on YES Network and told the story of Pettitte’s signing. Turns out, the Yankees offered Pettitte a substantial deal in December but Pettitte turned it down because he wasn’t sure he wanted to come back. Pettitte started working out to get in shape, but when the Yankees made their moves for Pineda and Kuroda, Cashman told Pettitte he no longer had the money to make the signing. Pettitte shut it down briefly, then resumed throwing and approached Cashman during that brief stint as a guest instructor late last month. Earlier this week, Pettitte sneaked into camp for an early morning bullpen in front of Cashman, Joe Girardi and Larry Rothschild. Cashman confirmed that Pettitte will have to go through his own sort of spring training and pitch in some minor league games before he’s ready to join the big league rotation.

This is glorious news! Andy is a winner and a man of character. His presence on the mound will give this team the kind of lift that may propel us to a 28th world championship. A great day for Yankee fans!
