but last year in the playoffs, our pitching was OK, it's our offense that couldn't hit above average pitching

Last year in the playoffs, the Yankees scored 28 runs in 5 games. They scored 4 off Verlander and lost that game. If you score 4 runs off Verlander with your ace on the hill, you have to win that game. If you don't, you can't expect to advance.

It was a good series. The offense can't score 9 runs every game in the playoffs. Sometimes, a pitcher has to step up and win a game 3-2 or 2-1. Last year, the Detroit pitchers did, and that's why they won.

People care because it affects us getting other players and keeping ones like Montero around.

Who are these other players? The team has the best infield I've ever seen -- maybe even the best ever. The guy in center was an MVP candidate last year. Swisher has been fairly solid, and Gardner is a nice little player. They have a good catcher. Sabathia's one of the best pitchers in the game, and they have a solid rotation behind him. They probably the best bullpen in the majors.

What else, or who else, do you want?

Best Infield? Well for me that would be this one...

Chris Chambliss

Willie Randolph

Bucky Dent

Graig Nettles

Thurman Munson

IMO Id toss Donnie in at first over Chris 78...Gotta have Derek in over Bucky too ya think?

I think folks were listing the best infield that played together...

Our Board President is correct...Best Yankee infield that I saw play together

I would take the 98 infield over this one.

I would argue that a team that has made the post-season 16 of 17 years, won 7 AL titles and 5 World Championships has very little on the problem side...  but Hank did mess up with the ARod deal, Boras pulled a Brinks job on the Yanks with that deal...

It's true that for the most part we are always in the mix with a chance to win and what more could you ask for but we accomplished that while overcoming more than our share of unproductive moves where the correct move was probably to stand put.

if you followed any other team you would have the same complaints...  when you play a sport where 70 losses is a good year then there are MANY ways to second guess the guy in charge...    Piniella a genius?  I bet the Cubs forums said otherwise...   and then there's the Red Sox who didn't win anything for almost 100 years and the guy who gave them 2 titles is bashed for every loss...   some failures can be related to a bad decision, but most are just the nature of the game...  don't fool yorself, our success since 1995 will never be duplicated again in our lifetimes, I enjoyed every second of it.

that success from '95 on is incredible, almost unreal. The younger ones who have only seen this are spoiled Artie. Its all they know, we know of horrid Yankee teams that sucked.

All this hatred for Ibanez and the guy has already come through in the clutch more times than the rest of the team combined (except for maybe Granderson). I've never seen people dwell over a misplayed ball in the outfield for so long before. If Swisher made that error, people would have stopped talking about it by now, and Swisher can't even buy a hit in a big spot. I said before the season started that Ibanez was a great sign and the team that let him go would regret it; he seems to be working out quite well thus far.

Burying your argument with the facts.

i always thought he was a solid player .. as a FA the yankees should have signed him, but he signed with the Phillies.. dont remember if cashman was even in on him at the time.  good post AJ.
