Nova is everything Hughes isn't.

Hmmm...there might be something to this. It's just an impression I get watching them, but Nova throws with conviction; he knows his stuff is good enough to get the batter out. Hughes hopes he doesn't make a mistake, and isn't sure he can get the batter out.

Nova has a purpose to his pitches. A couple of times last night he set up batters with pitches off the plate and then ran the ball in on them and jammed them. Maybe I am drawing a blank but I never really see Hughes do that. Maybe that is why he can't put guys away. Nova just seems to have better pitching smarts and quite frankly better stuff.

The Angels are far from a potent lineup. They are getting a great deal of support from older players who weren't expected to contribute this much, like Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells, similar to the situation the Yankees have right now with Ibanez. I think Nova's major issue was the long layovers between innings. If you looked at his pitches, he clearly had his good stuff today, but just made a few mistakes locating it. Yankee Stadium seems to be playing very short in right field again early in the year, and the 2-run HR he gave up would have been a double in every other park in the league. That, plus the fact that he had a big lead and could afford to be less picky about his location.

Good post AJ, right on target.Smile

valid point . Hughes should be made to watch films of Nova. "Hey PHil, this is what  a major league  pitcher looks like".

The Angels probably have the 5th or 6th best lineup in the AL behind, NY, Bos, Det and Tex. Usually their pitching is really, really good. We just matched up a lot better with their #5 than they did with Nova. Wehn Morales comes back that lienup will be even better. Pujols, Morales, Trumbo, Hunter, Hunter, Wells and Kendrick is pretty stout lineup. Hell, any lineup with Pujols in it can do some serious damage.

In deed Lola, he has two victories. We had a great game Friday and a great Sunday, so we took 2 out of 3 from the Angels. The best thing was Sunday game was on ESPN, I am sure they all were eating crow. We need to keep on a roll so we can take first place.

NOVA is WINNING and that is the bottom line.  I just hope that he settles down and gives up a LOT LESS runs!

I say sophomore Jinx because of his ERA this spring and his struggles so far even though he is 2-0.  The Yanks have had to overcome big deficits and get him leads of 4 runs or more.  I AM happy that he is 2-0 and that Raul Ibanez (who had a GOD AWFUL spring) has also pleasantly SURPRISED me with his production so far.  When they got him I thought that it was 2yrs. too late.  I still think that a return of Matsui & or Damon would have been a better DH scenario than Jones/Ibanez!

You say sophomore jinx because you're obviously watching a different game than everyone else is or you just like to think negatively. What "big deficit" did you see? I only saw him down by 1 run. Is that a "big deficit"? What were you drinking?

I liked watching Nova before cable came out - now with Nat Geo, History and Discovery there are plenty of good science shows to go around.  I used to like the Bio channel when it had actual biographies on it but now it's usually the life and times of Nicolas Cage or Snooki...   still not sure how watching Nova can help his pitching but I bet it'll make Hughes smarter...

The only reason that he's giving up so many runs is because he has had a big lead in each game. That is what good pitchers do, give up runs to get through an inning, but not so many to get the team in trouble.
