Cot's doesn't list a no-trade. Kind of surprising though if it's accurate. Rafael Soriano rhp 3 years/$35M (2011-13) 3 years/$35M (2011-13) signed by NY Yankees as a free agent 1/14/11 11:$10M, 12:$11M, 13:$14M Soriano may opt out and take $1.5M buyout after either 2011 or 2012 seasons

I didn't know he was getting 14 mil next year. There would have to have money going to the other team and no way he opts out unless he goes somewhere and pitches like his last year in Tampa . Even then that would be stupid on his part because every team knows his act now.

Yep... Yanks are stuck with him. Thanks Hal, et al. Nobody's going to pay him that $$ even to close, so he won't opt-out. If the Yankees could eat a chunk of money in a deal while getting a valuable young player back that would be great IMO. Those are tough things to work out though, especially during the season. This thing with the Giants probably goes nowhere, but it's fun to ponder. I think they have other guys in the pen, and they have a minor league reliever they're pretty high on apparently.

Ponder?  lol  I doubt it would go anywhere either, but it is an interesting idea.  That opt-out clause and his amount would be the killer.  If the Yanks wanted a good young guy in return they'd have to kick in a chunk of money especially with that opt-out clause.  The Giants would probably be more willing to deal a young guy if they knew they'd have Soriano for at least the next 2 years with the Yankees paying some of that money.

Eat not one DIME!  If this deal ever came to fruition, it'd be the Yanks turn to do the squeezING of the cajones rather than being squeezed. IMO some folks here get too worked up over Soriano's demeanor. I'm far from his biggest fan but,  I could care less whether he ever smiles if he gets hitters out.

LOL..  Nice!  You laughed at my word, and then repeated my ponder right back to me... Or would it be my "ponderance"?  Yeah, that's it.

I'm betting Ca$hman would move him in a heart beat.. We have pitchers that can replace him.. Hughes if he can't stay in the rotation and Phelps is in the waiting as well.. Yankees would most likely pay some of his contract if they could get a decent young prospect in return...

I'd love to move him. I was completely behind signing him, i thought it would make us unstoppable, but i hate his attitude and he can't get big outs. my patience with him has been exhausted, i'm done supporting him.

I'm not a Soriano fan, but he has value and as many others have said, I wouldn't eat too much of his $$$.  Do the Giants have a solid young OF or 3B??  I think that would be of interest to the Yanks.

Right now his only "value" is as trade bait to an NL team that is desperate.  That team is the Giants.  PICK UP THE PHONE!

I agree. It can't hurt to call. Soriano is a sulky sourpuss who hates being the 7th inning guy. He wants to close.

Sends  him to a place where he will close.

Yanks  would  probably have to offer some cash, but with that they would have leverage to ask for a decent

prospect or  2 .

Looking into this idea yesterday led me to lurking on a Giants message board or two to get a sense of how they felt about the closer situation.  The overwhelming consensus was that trading for a closer is a bad idea.  They have a couple of in house candidates, and a highly touted prospect (Heath Hembree) at AAA who they feel could be their next closer.  While this initially seemed like an intriguing idea to me, I honestly don't see a fit here.  I can't see the Giants using financial or prospect resources to address their closer vacancy when they have in-house options they like.  That's my take at this point anyway.

Soriano is signed only through 2013, so his salary is not a factor against the luxury tax in 2014.  And if he really is set to make $14 mil for 2013 there is NO chance that he will opt out after this year unless he goes to SF, is lights out as their closer and his agent convinces him that he can sucker some team into giving him another dumb contract like the Yanks did.

For the Yanks, to simply be able to dump a malcontent and his salary is a plus because they may well be looking for a place to put Hughes when Pineda and Pettitte return.  But if I’m SF, I have no interest in Soriano unless I really feel that with a decent closer I have a real shot at the playoffs.
