Pitching staff with a 4-5 record and an ERA of over five

People can gripe about our offense not getting clutch hits (like tonight) or the RISP but the fact remains we have scored five or six runs in several of the games we ended up losing. And when that's the case, you point to your pitching, not the offense. Yes, I would like to see walk off rallys like we did in 09 but what I would like to see more is us not having to rally back in the first place.

Pitching wins championships, period. And if someone thinks they can slug their way to a World Series Trophy, the Texas Rangers say hi.

A rough start. They aren't alone. Lots of top tier pitchers have had bumps so far. Hopefully Andy gets here sooner than later, and adds his usual stability to the rotation. Apparently noone else is capable right now......They don't get back on track by mid May, people will be calling for Grandpa Larry's head on a plate.

Agreed. The starters havent been doing the job. We also had situations to win soem of the games despite the pitching but failed. Too many hitters are falling short too.

I know I've harped on this several times, but last night when Swisher came to the plate in the 7th inning, runners on first and third and he was swinging so hard, I've always thought that when you took that full hard swing from your heals, (so to speak) you can never be as selective at knowing if what the pitch coming is.. I know they are pros, but he swung at a pitch that actually bounced in the dirt, for a strike out.. We have too many players doing this, can't Long see what is so obvious ??? We are such a feast or famine team, I just can't see us beating good pitching taking this approach at the plate...

The hitters are (like Swisher did) but like the original poster said, when you need to put up seven or either runs to win a game..that's a problem.

+1. I had similar post in another thread. Once Swisher swung at changeup for strike 2 it was a matter of time that he went fishing for ball in dirt. Granderson also has no discipline at plate.  He already has 14Ks in 48 ABs. That is almost a 30% clip. I am getting tired of watching these guys flail away. You would think Swisher would try and cut back his swing with 2 strikes to make contact.. but no swinging from the heels as usual and missing the ball by 2 feet.

Until we have players who can push these guys for playing time they have no incentive to change. Now with Gardner out 15 days, we have a starting outfield with Jones that would be 1,2 and 3 in Ks by the end of the season if they played every day.

All that off-season effort to upgrade the starting pitching sure has paid off.

And we thought that with AJ gone we wouldn't be tearing our hair out every 5th day.

ABout the only thing that makes me feel better is the fact I have friends who are fans of other teams who are feeling the same way right now. Here's the thing...really good pitchers aren't going to hit the market anymore unless they want to.

No question! But, my point was, that the other teams pitching has set the table for our hitters and we didnt get the job done. We had the opptys to pick up our pitchers and failed.

I know we did..Jeter's home run came too late and once again our RISP was bleh. But at the end of the day,it's not supposed to be the offense's job to bail out the pitching staff every single game..which is what we've had to do.
