Thoughts On Phil Hughes

I'll admit that the ups and downs with Hughes have been frustrating.  I find the amount of trashing he's taking to be somewhat surprising though.  He hasn't been a bad guy, and though he's had some set-backs, he hasn't hung his head or whined as far as I've seen.  He certainly hasnt quit on himself or the team.  He came to camp out of shape last season, and that was inexcusable.  By all accounts he came in this year in great shape and worked hard.  I guess he got the message.

Hughes is only 25 years old.  The same age as David Phelps and DJ Mitchell, and a year older than Adam Warren and Dellin Betances.  Everyone still seems pretty excited about most of those guys, and they've contributed nothing to the ML club yet.  I often read posts of regret for prospects that get away due to the impatience and pressure of NY, most recently those lamenting the decision not to try harder with Ian Kennedy.  I think I even detected some Melky-love in a thread this morning.

So my question is this...  Do we really think that Hughes is a bust, or are we just fed up with watching him develop at the ML level?  Sometimes I think that because of the original hype, Hughes has become something in people's minds other than what he really is, which is a 25 year old pitcher with mixed results so far, but some real ability and upside.  Are we ready to cut our losses at this point and move on?  Because it seems like many people are.

Just my thoughts...  Have at it.

I believe Hughes turns 26 in June, but don't quote me on that.  I'm too lazy to look it up.  It's time for Hughes to step up.  If he has another bad start tonight I'd send him back to AAA for awhile to get straightened out, or back to the bullpen where he's had success.   They can't keep sending him out there and having him pitch poorly, not in this division with the competition they have.  If they could send a winning pitcher like Nova down last year, then Hughes can certainly be sent down.  Obviously I'm rooting for the guy to bounce back tonight with a good game. He needs it, and this team needs it more.  Just my opinion.

here is a deep thought on Phil Hughes:

If Phil Hughes asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell
him is, "God is crying."  And if he asks why God is crying, another cute
thing to tell him is, "Probably because of something you did."

Hughes does turn 26 on June 24. I was too lazy to look it up also, so I asked my wife if she would google Phil Hughes. I guess she doesn't quite understand the meaning of google because she gave me this icy stare. Wink

OK... then he's almost 26.  I'd still maintain that he's not much older than the guys I compared him to, who have all had more developmental time.  I'd have no problem sending him to AAA if they thought he could benefit, and I agree he needs a good start tonight.  I guess I'm puzzled mostly by the amount of hate he gets sometimes.  We always hear the narrative about the Yankees not being patient enough with young players.  Every time a hot new prospect emerges people can't wait to see him, and they swear they can be patient if he struggles.  It never seems to happen that way though.  I do realize he's been here for a long time now, and it's time to make some strides, but he seems to be healthy and he's only had a couple of starts.

I believe his confidence is shot. He's thinking to much and not focused on just throwing the ball. If he can get through 5 innings without getting shelled it may help him build up his confidence. He's playing in a tough market and he knows Andy Pettittes breathing down his neck. I think it's especially difficult for pitchers to focus mentally in NY .....It's a make it or break it town!

I don't see hate I see frustration with him, Joba also .  Instead of getting better they regressed. Joba more injury related. Hughes is a stand up guy but that only gets you so far. He has to produce this year. I think he was more of a pitcher when he got called up that 1st start against Texas then he is now. I see him trying to muscle up and throw a 94 MPH heater and hit or miss location. No changing speeds. He might pitch great tonight but if not he has to go down and have someone help him figure it out. You can tell he's pretty frustrated also.

You may be right Lola... confidence could be a big part of it.  I'd like to see a start where Martin calls the game and Hughes just lets it fly as called.  No thinking, just execute the pitch he calls for.  He might as well let it all go at this point.

Hate wasn't the right word probably.  The level of frustration has led to some taking some shots at him.  I've probably done it myself at times.  I'm not really defending him entirely, just trying to get a more reasonable perspective.

I still reserve the right to b1tch and moan in the game thread tonight if things don't go well.  ;)
