Cashman would say Nick Johnson is the next Mickie Mantle if he wanted to. Let's calm down a bit with this Cashman would call anyone stuff. That's his job and please give a young kid more than S.T. to consider Pineda a bust. We always preach patience and make excuses for the young kids, well believe it or not, Pineda is young and has the potential to pan out. Just like Montero. I know that's a tough concept to swallow ... Patience ... But still, some needs to be shown here.

Answer does not change.  We need that spot to keep our 30 something players healthy.  The days of full time DH in the al is fading.

So in other words even if the Yankees had a young borderline hall of famer like Edgar they should still keep the DH open? If that's the case, I don't buy it. The DH is open for Jeter and Arod. They could both DH a game each week and that would still leave a good hitting DH somewhere around 500 AB's.

You are comparing Montero to Edgar?  Boy, that's a stretch.

The GM compared him to Carbrea

And also to Piazza

Then went on to say the Yankees are taking all the risk

How can the fans have patience when the Yankees themselves don't have it.

Cashman: Pineda needs to develop a change-up

They don't? Then why are Chamberlain and Phil Hughes still with the Yankees? Why is Nunez still batting in the lineup? Or the fact they didn't give up on Brett Gardner when he was struggling? They don't excercise patience at times but they still stick with players they believe in. Pineda still has time to pan out, he needs to go down, work on his change and then return to the Majors. He's still young but some are acting like he's some mid 30's has-been.

They have an romotinal tie to Hughes because he was the first player in a long time in a barren farm system.

They gave up on Joba as a starter when he was 23 and banished him to the pen.

They love Nunez and Gardner

Of course he isn't some mid 30s has been but the injury is a concern

Yanks should have stopped with the Nelson and Tino trades.

Noesi and Montero haven't exactly been tearing it up.

True! Don't get me wrong I don't know if Pineda is going to be a bust or not. But IMO, if you think that you have Piazza, you keep Piazza.

That's only if you know you have Piazza.  They didn't.  Then you make Piazza a DH... They couldn't.  Anybody want a butcher at C for 10 years with young pitchers on the way?  Nope.

Piazza didn't hit .262 with 2 HR and an OPS under .800.

If you're satisfied that that's what he'll end up hitting, fine. But why the premature, defensive (not to mention derisive) put-down if you're so certain? He's 22-23; lots of time to learn and develop--even how to catch better than he's showed well as well as get used to hitting against major league pitchers. The "experrt" prognosticators were predicting last year in spring that if JM made the team (NYY), he'd probably end up batting around .270-.280 with about 25 homers. Take away five or so of the latter because of Safeco's field configuration and his tendency to hit right-center, and he's probably still within range of that prediction. It wouldn't be bad for a first-year player. Cf. Mantle's first-year offensive stats. In the meantime, we'll see if Pineda can win 17-18 games consistently in the future, that is, assuming he's not seriously injured or that his second half last year was just a blip rather than a symptom of his pitching ability.
