SWB Game 5-6 Andy Pettitte

BigGuy Posts: 37,991	SWB AAA Yankees Game 5-6-12 The SWB Yankees dropped a 7-5 decision to the Pawtucket Red Sox. 13,584 were at Rochester to see Andy Pettitte pitch. The loss was the Yankees 4th in a row and drops their record to 14-14. Pitching: Andy Pettitte made his 4th start on his comeback trail. 1st inning: he gave up 2 runs ( 1 unearned because of a Steve Pearce error on a foul pop), on a 2 doubles, and 2 singles before recording an out. He struck out the next 2 batters, and picked a runner off 1st base to end the inning, as Pawtucket took a quick 2-0 lead. 2nd inning: The defense stuggled again as Brandon Laird made an error on a groundball from the leadoff hitter. Francisco Cervelli then had a passed ball with the runner moving up to 2nd base. Andy then got his 3rd K and walked a batter. An infield hit to 3rd loaded the bases with 1 out. Another walk forced in another unearned run. Pettitte got a doubleplay to end the inning with Pawtucket leading 3-0. 3rd inning: A leadoff double, 2 strikeouts, and a line-out to right stranded the runner at 3rd. Thru 3 innings 65 pitches--43 strikes. 4th inning. For the 4th inning in a row the leadoff runner reached base, this time on a single. A rbi double drove in another run with the runner moving up to 3rd base on the throw home. An rbi sac fly scored the 2nd run of the inning. Another flyout and infield groundout on a nice play by Pettitte ended the inning with the PawSox up 5-0. 5th inning: Andy retired the side in order on flyout to right, line-out to short, and flyout to left. He finished strong retiring the last 6 men he faced. Pettitte's line: 5 IP, 5 runs (3 earned), 8 hits, 5 K's--2 walks. Pitches 95--strikes 62, 3 flyouts--4 groundouts. Adam Miller came on to throw a scoreless 6th issuing a walk and getting a DP. Miller gave up to singles to start the 7th, but a DP helped get him out of the jam. Juan Cedeno pitched the 8th giving up a run on a solo homer to up the Pawtucket lead to 6-3. Cedeno gave up another run in the 9th to give Pawtucket a 7-5 lead. Offense: Doug Mathis got the start for the PawSox. The Yankees had a threat in the 3rd inning when Cole Garner was hit by a pitch and Yadil Mujica singled, but Garner was picked off 2nd base. In the 4th, Colin Curtis and Jack Cust walked, and Steve Pearce reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out. A run scored when Brandon Laird hit into a doublplay. The 2nd run scored when Ronnie Mustelier reached on a 2-base error (should have been a double), to cut the PawSox lead to 5-2. In the 5th, Yadil Mujica doubled scored when Colin Curtis hit a rbi single to cut the lead to 5-3. In the 8th, Steve Pearce and Jack Cust singled, and Brandon Laird walked to load the bases. Ronnie Mustelier followed with a 2-rbi single. With the tying run at 3rd base Francisco Cervelli and Cole Garner struck out. Pawtucket 6-5 after 8 innings. Yadil Mujica led off the 9th with his 3rd hit, but was stranded. Notes: Francisco Cervelli went 1-4 with a strikeout and passed ball. He's batting .222. Stratocaster Posts: 6,405	Craner is one heck of a good luck charm, isn't he? I bet he tried to get them to validate his parking when he went through the turnstiles. ;)

yankeeoldfan Posts: 5,409	Not bad, but not great either.. Sounds like better defense could have helped, but of course it always does.. Will he be up for his next start or do the Yankees want to see more out of him ??

If he's stretched out enough to throw 90+ pitches then I say let it fly.

He wasn't great, but he got no help from the defense those first 2 innings. He was forced to throw a lot more pitches and could have easily gone 6 innings. There was no need to rush, because it’s difficult what I’m trying to do. I’m excited to get back, and I believe everyone is excited to get me back. I’m looking to go up there and do my part. I think everybody knows what to expect from me. I don’t go out there and throw shutouts or complete game shutouts. I’m going to battle and give six, seven, eight innings. kingj Posts: 372	It's probably hard to "get up" for minor league starts when you're a 39-year-old with Andy's pedigree. If his arms and legs are there, bring him up. He'll be fine. Until he proves otherwise, no one I'd rather see get the ball in a big spot.
