Fans don't have Nunez to kick around anymore....Surprised

As reported,,
,
....The Yanks sent Eduardo Nunez to the minors to make room for Chavez. Girardi said they want him to play every day at SS.

....Yanks want Nunez to get regular reps at SS because they c him as every day SS. But, with Jeter here at least thru 2014, will Nunez stagnate?

....Girardi said the team had asked Nunez to fill a utility role typically filled by a veteran player. Said it was unfair to his development.

.....Girardi framing Nunez demotion as a chance to give him regular work at SS/2B.

Always proud to be a Yankee fan.

Yanks activate Eric Chavez, send Eduardo Nunez to Triple-A

By

Via Marc Carig, the Yankees have activated Eric Chavez off the 7-day DL and sent Eduardo Nunez to Triple-A in a corresponding move. They want him to play shortstop and second base on an everyday basis in an effort to improve his defense. Jayson Nix will remain with the team as the utility infielder.

Joe and I talked about the possibility to sending Nunez down at length in today’s podcast. I didn’t think it would happen mostly because it seemed like one of those ideas that wouldn’t even have been entertained had he not made those two errors last night. Something had to give with the kid’s defense though, hopefully he can find some consistency down there. Nix has a ton of experience at second and third bases but just a handful of games at short in each of the last few years. He could fake it once a week but not if Derek Jeter were to miss some time.

Chavez, meanwhile, returns to the team after missing a week with whiplash and possible concussion. He was eligible to come off the DL yesterday but had to wait for MLB clearance to be activated. He’s in tonight’s lineup at DH.

The Yankees obviously still think this guy's the future shortstop when Jeter packs it in.  I'm not so sure about that but a SS is a lot harder to find than an outfielder.  Let him try to improve there first.  If he can't hack it there a switch to the outfield can be made over winterball and spring training.  The sad part about this is the kid was never ready defensively and should have been down at AAA all last year.  Backup infielders are a dime a dozen and you usually look for a good glove man first.  Nunez was the oppositie with a good bat and speed, but no glove.  They made a mistake with this kid and put him in a bad position.  I hope for his sake and theirs that he can improve defensively.

Marc Carig

  • Girardi said it was a difficult call to send Nunez to Triple-A: "It's tough because he's a great kid with a great work ethic that's willing to do anything for you, that provides a lot of excitement. But for his development we thought it was more important to get him playing at short again."

Had to be done. You can't have a utility infielder that can't field. Besides SS I would wish they could work him in the OF once in awhile because with the Yanks that's where his future is unless they want to trade him.

Actually Nunez should be kicking himself around ... he should be ashamed of his defense and welcome the trip to AAA to help him work on it!

He might as well do his best down there... he can play SS every day.  He wasn't going to develop in NY.  This isnt the worst thing for him.
