Yankees will give Smith first taste of Majors

It's shaping up to be quite a week for men named Will Smith.

The actor will see the premier of his third "Men in Black" movie this weekend, but first, the pitcher will make his Major League debut for the Royals on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

Smith was called up from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday, following Chris Getz's left ribcage injury, which forced the second baseman to the disabled list. Smith has spent five seasons in the Minor League systems of both the Royals and Angels. He joined the Kansas City organization during the 2010 season, coming over with Sean O'Sullivan in a trade that sent Alberto Callaspo to Anaheim.

The left-hander entered the season ranked as the Royals' No. 15 prospect by MLB.com. He pitched well last season, going 13-9 with a 3.85 ERA in 27 starts for Double-A Northwest Arkansas. In nine starts with Omaha this season, Smith went 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA.

As Smith makes his first career start, Yankees lefty Andy Pettitte will make career start No. 482. Pettitte has made two starts so far this season, and his last performance was brilliant. The Yankees southpaw looked like the Pettitte of old in a win over the Reds, throwing eight shutout innings, striking out nine batters and allowing just four hits and a walk.

The 39-year-old Pettitte has always fared well against the Royals, against whom he made his big league debut back in 1995. In 23 career games against Kansas City, Pettitte is 13-3 with a 3.48 ERA. The last time the veteran squared off with the Royals was on April 10, 2009, when he worked seven innings and allowed just one run on three hits and a walk.

Always proud to be a Yankee fan.

Lately, I feel the term "rubber" is appropriate. We could use some protection in these games!Tongue Out
