S.F. native DiMaggio honored with all-star stamp

Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? To the front of our envelopes!

Stamps featuring San Francisco native and all-star slugger Joe DiMaggio will become available for the first time on July 21, the United States Postal Service announced Thursday.

The stamps feature a series of old-time all-stars including DiMaggio, Larry Doby, Willie Stargell and Ted Williams.

“We’re heard from Indians, Pirates, Red Sox and Yankee fans and we’re stepping up to the plate to immortalize their revered players individually,” said Stephen Kearney, the postal service’s stamp services manager.

Sheets of stamps featuring single players will only be available at certain east-coast post offices, Kearney said.

Apparently Kearney didn’t know that we San Franciscans are pretty proud of DiMaggio too. (Yes, we know he was born in Martinez. He spent most of his childhood in North Beach.)

Good thing you can order a sheet of stamps featuring all the players online:

It looks like just 4 players for now. No mention of what players are planned for the future.

I won't be buying a Willie Stargell stamp. And, if by some odd chance I get one in the mail it will be burned in a private ceremony.

Stargell was a good player and such a likeable guy. Why the anger toward him, 61?

He played for the Pirates. Except for the Reds,Dodgers,Giants and Mets I can't think of a team I dislike more, not even the Red Sox. Even the team colors make me want to break something...LOL.
