Basically Gardner's replacement.

This isn't Ichiro circa 2005.

This is 2012 Ichiro hitting .262 with a tiny .288 OBP.

It's for 2 months and his 262 is about what Gardner hits. Granted Gardnre walks more but Ichiro puts the ball in play more. It's a wash for a couple of months

My issue was with Ratmann trying to tell me he could replace Swisher next year. You can't replace Swisher's production with a .350 slugging and a .640 OPS. I don't have a big problem with him replacing Gardy this year, especially since they didn't give up any important pieces. They'll need the depth. It's worked out well with Jones and Ibanez, but they're pushing it there.

Totally agree! He's no replacement for Swisher and I'm sure they let him walk at the end of the year but he might be just what the Dr. ordered for the rest of this year

I agree. He's never been a favorite of mine, but he should fit nicely in LF this season. I imagine he'll bat 9th like Gardner did mostly. I doubt Girardi will monkey around with Jeter and the top of the line-up.

I hope he leads off. This guy was a great hitter and to bat him 9th is insulting. I don't think anyone on the Yanks would have a problem with him hitting at the top of the order. Let him show he's not good enough to lead off.

Already a smart PR move by Ichiro

just heard on the radio ichiro is gonna bat 9th for the yanks , now that makes no sense at all.    btw if swisher isnt coming back next year then what would be so horrible with ichiro playing in rf next year?

It's too early to give any player 51. But that was a classy move by Ichiro. I apologize to him for calling him Ichi- arse in the past.

Lauren just posted that he will be wearing #51. I think it's appropriate as he wore it in Seattle in honor of Bernie.

Oh geeez I never thought about hitting him 9th. I'd much rather have him hit 1, jeter 2 and get granderson back down in an RBI spot at 6 or 7

We'll see what Girardi does.  Ichiro batting 9th would turn the line-up over nicely.  I'm not sure he's the prototypical leaflet guy now that his BA and OBP have slipped .

I think he said he didn't want 51 because it's Bernies number but I guess we will find out

I think he's going to be fired up. IMO it's a mistake to hit him 9th. If my boy Gardy was more consistent in the leadoff spot, I would have hit him leadoff

The last I saw, he said he is NOT going to wear #51 because of respect to the Yankees fans. He understands how much Bernie means to NY so he's going to choose another number, and make it his own. ------> Attittude FTW!

And Girardi plans to talk with Ichiro and will ask him where he wants to bat in the lineup, because he deserves it.
