Girardi explains why Granderson is the lead off hitter

IF they are lookin for a leadoff hitter, Ichiro is a darn good candidate. But JEter has had a great year leading off, so if it aint broke don't fix it. Having a .250 40homer a year guy who strikes out 120 times a season like Grandy leading off is a terrible idea. We need  to get shot of this idea and  put it back to where it was, its Nova's 8era sinse the allstar break which is the far bigger issue than our batting order.

Granderson is certainly not your prototypical lead off hitter with his low BA. With Jeter hitting into many DPs, Granderson should think of stealing when he reaches on base....

Girardi made solid points ... thanks for posting this lauren. Wink

For the one looking for Joe's reason for Grandy batting first. Bump.

Granderson is 2 for 2 tonight as in striking out. If this is a joke it is a sick joke. At this point 200Ks this season is a lock.

Is he in a race with A-Rod?

“Grandy falls in the category of he’s one of our higher (on-base) guys, so that’s why he goes there,” Girardi said. “Well, you could say, ‘Grandy is a power hitter.’ Well, so is (Robinson Cano). So is Tex. So is Swish. So is (Raul Ibanez). So you say, ‘Why don’t you move him back?’ Well, then who do I move up to the front with speed? You might say, ‘OK, why don’t you move (Ichiro Suzuki) up?’ Well, his on-base is not as high as it’s been in the past. So then you try to break up your left-handers with your switch-hitters and your right-handers, so it’s not easy for them to get through the lineup.

“If we had all of our hitters present, Granderson wouldn’t lead off. But with the injury to Alex, you have to make some adjustments.”

---------------------------------

Damn Joe has the worst reasons to do so. Ok i buy the obp thing..no sh*t, he acts like he's a genious and fans are stupid.

But, Granderson is the team leader in HR's, and double that of Swisher(same obp basically, but Swisher works the count alot better), and why bat a guy hitting 29hrs in front of Ichiro(who's obp is below .290) and Martin(who cannot hit above .200), why?

If Granderson get's his hr, it's no doubt probably going to be only a solo job. THIS is why you don't bat your #1 hr hitter leadoff, a guy who may hit 40+ hrs, does not belong in the leadoff spot. NEVER.

And his obsession for a balanced line up is just out of control. Joe, gets so stuck up with righty/lefty..everything!. He lacks a feel for the game, and always did. (he's great with the bullpen, awful with lineups/small ball..ect)

I guess Mantle should have batted leadoff ha? He had a high obp. What about Ruth? lol.

Oh and i like speed the top, but it's not like Joe makes Granderson steal anyway, when he does get on base.

Add on moving Jeter into the 2nd spot, where he's a major dp problem, as well as the #2 hitter gets alot of fastballs, and Jeter is not 25 anymore, as the inside fastball gives him trouble.

Oh..and now that Granderson is batting leadoff, just watch his hr's become few and far between, as he'll see alot off off speed pitches.

Nice try Joe, but you're logic does not work here.

(Yanks only leadoff hitter really is Jeter, with Swisher in the #2 spot, and Granderson #5)

The reason given for moving Jeter to leadoff a few years back was his hitting into double plays problem from the 2 spot. I still don't understand the thinking of putting Granderson into the leadoff spot, except maybe for Girardi to say that he's shifted the lineup around. Using his reasoning, why shouldn't Ibanez or Swisher be placed there?

Joe used the 'speed-at-the-top' point. Ok here's the speed he's talking about:

Jeter has 7 SB and was CS 2 times, Granderson has 8 SB's and was CS 3 times.

So how is this an advantage in speed? Jeter actually runs the bases as good as Granderson, even at his (old) age of 38.

Jeter belongs in the leadoff spot. Wow..Joe seems to be trying to reinvent the wheel here.

Joe needs to just accept this hr hitting team is indeed that, a hr hitting team. Best thing is to get Long to work with situational hitting.

Joe will use his argument of Granderson giving more speed. Trouble is Granderson has only one more SB then Jeter.

So that argument does not work.

btw: What are the odds Joe moves Arod to the 6th or 7th spot when he returns, and still is in a slump?
