Mars landing went 'flawlessly,' scientists say

(CNN) -- NASA's rover Curiosity successfully carried out a highly challenging landing on Mars early Monday, transmitting images back to Earth after traveling hundreds of millions of miles through space to explore the red planet.

Scientists praised the landing Monday.

"This is a stunning achievement. The engineering went flawlessly," said Scott Hubbard, who was the first Mars program director at NASA headquarters and is now a consulting professor at Stanford University.

The 10 science instruments aboard Curiosity are in "perfect health," and testing and calibration are under way, NASA said Monday.

Some rover team specialists are analyzing the data from the landing, while others are preparing Curiosity for exploring Gale Crater, where it landed, NASA said. On its first full day on Mars, the rover is tasked with raising its high-gain antenna, enabling it to communicate directly with Earth at higher data rates. The primary method of transmitting data is through the orbiters, because that is more energy-efficient.

This guy must work for walmart. He most certainly isn't isn't the flight director of NASA's Curiousity rover because the president killed NASA.

nobody cares about NASA - the world is broke, somehow a bunch of nerds putting remote control cars on another planet doesn't seem so cool anymore...  besides the landing didn't even happen - it's all done in CGI on that weird haircut nerd's iMac, it's all they can afford to do on O'Bummer's budget....

It's great to see that NASA still has what it takes. Now if only the American Auto Industry would hire some of those NASA engineers they would come up with an flawless clean energy auto engine, etc.....

Haven't you seen the movie Revenge of the Nerds? One day the nerds will rule. The link below shows another reason why we should be nice to them and treat them with the respect they deserve.

your guys around here cared when they ended the space shuttle program last year crying that Obama killed NASA.

Now granted the Curiousity program has only cost 2.1 Billion dollars compared to the 200 Billion the shuttle program has cost since it's inception but what has the space shuttle really ever done besides kill fourteen austronauts. Also Curiousity survived a trip and landing to mars, the space shuttles didn't even make it to the moon.
