If Ortiz is put on waivers....

...do you think that the Yankees would claim him?  It is unlikely any NL team would (though he was not a complete disaster at 1B during interleague play) and, of the AL teams, the Yanks would be the last ones to get a shot because of their record.

Of course, if they were to claim him, I think there is a better chance of my walking on the moon than the Yanks and Sox working out a trade, where Ortiz comes to the Yanks.

No.  It wouldn't get that far probably, and as you said, the Sox would be unlikely to deal him to NY even if it did.  That would be a PR nightmare for them.  Beyond all that, I'm not sure he fits anyway.  The Yankees are not set up to function with an everyday DH.

If he were to be put on waivers he wouldn't get to us.. I think the way it works we would have the last chance at clamming him ??

I think it works that all the AL teams get first crack before the NL ones do because he is an AL player.  But yes, it goes in reverse order by record so every other team in the AL would need to pass for the Yankees to have a shot.

I was motivated to ask the question because I have been enjoying all the "force Henry, Lucchino and Werner to sell the team",  "fire BV, "fire Cherrington" "get rid of every current player and play all the kids from AAA" threads on the Red Sox boards.  I guess it is not surprising that Ortiz' periodic whining about his contract has soured some fans on him.

Right.  The Yankees would get last priority in the AL, but priority before any NL team.  This still will never happen, but that's how the order would go I believe.

I would hope the Yankees would let him pass on to the NL if it ever got that far. Big sloppy got off to terrible starts the couple years leading into this year and he has been fantastic this year but look at him! He hasn't been in this good shape since the Saux first got him. Remember it is his walk year and he will want a multi-year deal and then smart money will be on a hugh size increase rather than a stay in shape for the good of the team.

I really doubt the Yankee would land David Ortiz.. The Tigers would have interest, so would the Angels who are falling way short of expectations, the Rangers could get in the mix and there is no way the Rays or Orioles would let the Yankees land Ortiz... And even if NONE of them make a claim and he falls to the Yankees (which I doubt make a claim considering they are getting good production from the DH role including a place to rest the older starters), I doubt the Red Sox would trade him to the Yankees...

So I dont think its happening any way you cut it.

Agreed there is no way the Red Sox would trade Ortiz to NY even if every other AL team passed on him.

espn.go.com/mlb/team/stats/splits/_/name...  says that the cumulative DH stats for the Yanks are .309/21/73 with an OPS of .896.  That seems hard to believe, but if true, Ortiz really would not be that much of an upgrade

why would the yankees want him, even if just for this year?  he doesn't fit the team and has health issues.  Being last in line in the AL, can't block him from going to an AL team and who cares if he goes to the NL?  A claim would be a waste of time.

doodle, I could see a few reasons to grab him fot the end of the seson but most likely it wouldn't happen. Get the oppotunity to block out other contending teams that could be a post season threat, things would have to be structured correctly, with the roster expantion for the additional 15 they would have the room, He can hit the crap out of the ball in Yankee stadium, only thing he's worth is pinch hitting role. Unfotunately I'm not a huge Popi fan and he's got baggage. A move of grabbing him really would be to take him out of play it just strategic.
