It was great! Don looked like a real first class manager yesterday. I do miss managers kicking dirt up onto the umps pants.

I also miss them picking up the bases and throwing them in the stands.

I've lost some respect for Mattingly as a manager because of the way he deals with umps.

61 nice to see you like some old school managing every once in a while (Earl Weaver use to be so much fun to watch have a tantrum) and Joe cool to add the video attachment for people to access it. Poodle, I mean doodle, just kidding with you. It would have been nice if you had given a little example in your post of why you feel that way about Mattingly.

good stuff from Donnie. When folks give respect, they get it in return. Some of these humps, I mean umps do not deserve it. Seems like in the last couple of years the current crop of umps have been more petty , take things personally and are quick to throw guys out. Lets not even bring up their awful game calling, strike zone has been all over the place with some of these guys this year.

examples?  In this case, the umpire heard them complaining and told them to knock it off.  Player immediately kept going and got tossed, so why does Mattingly need to throw a fit here?  He didn't just argue, he went nuts.  His player was wrong and he knew it.  How about earlier this month, Dodgers don't get a call at second (ump was totally correct), Mattingly throws a big fit when he was completely wrong.  This is why managers like this are called Rats.  They argue when they know they are wrong.  They take both sides of an argument just because it benefits their team - for example one night they want umpires to conference after a play to "get it right" (because it would benefit their team) but the next night on the same play they want an ump to stick with his call and not conference (because it benefits his team).  Spare me the "well duh why would he argue if it didn't benefit him?"  How about not arguing to begin with, or at least being consistent when you do?

'Old school managing" aka throwing a fit is not entertaining to me, it is sad.  A grown man acting like a whining baby.  What other sport is this allowed to occur?

doodle, I can respect where you're coming from. The manager does have to protect their players. I'm not sure of your age, but manager tamtrums have been toned down a lot over the years because a big fine is attacthed now to avoid the show. It is called entertainment for a reason. All sports are entertainment. I was curious why you'd lost respect for Mattingly. You really didn't lose respect for Mattingly you were disappointed in how he handled himself with the situration. Would you say I'm correct there? I'm sure if Mattingly was standing next to you, you'd love his autograph possilbly on a ball or baseball card. Also be thrilled to have a conversation with him. I'm sure you're a major Yankee fan like the others here. Grown men whining and acting likes babies, well, we get to see that right here on forums. We see plenty of blown calls. Remember last year when the ump blew a call that cost a pitcher a no hitter or perfect game. IMO: Mattingly going nuts was because he's got his team in first place in a close race and lost an important player for the game. He could have told his player okay enough I don't need you to get you getting tossed. Instead we got a show. You didn't enjoy Girardi mimic the umps call after he got tossed last week? Other sports you see tantrums from managers. Basketball, football and hockey. Bobby Knight tossing a chair. Really, he could have hurt someone by accident. I'm not a Bobby Knight fan either but it was entertaining. Thanks for sharing and I see this forum they bumped to the MLB area.
