NY Marathon is canceled/postponed. Ultimately, it's the right thing to do.  Get those generators where it's needed as efforts should be focused on recovery.

New York City Marathon Cancelled Amid Sandy Controversy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York City Marathon has been cancelled, the mayor’s office confirmed to 1010 WINS on Friday afternoon.

Earlier, Mayor Michael Bloomberg came under fire for pressing ahead with the weekend’s eventin a city still reeling from Superstorm Sandy, with some New Yorkers and many public figures saying that holding the 26.2-mile race would be insensitive and divert police and other important resources when many are still suffering.

However, Bloomberg released a statement Friday afternoon, saying the race had “become the source of controversy and division.”

At a news conference, Bloomberg defended his decision as a way to raise money for the stricken city and boost morale less than a week after Sandy flooded neighborhoods, knocked out power to hundreds of thousands homes and businesses and killed at least 41 people.

“New York has to show we are here and we are going to recover … to give people something to cheer about in what has been a dismal week for a lot of people,” he said.

He noted that his predecessor, Rudy Giuliani, went ahead with the marathon two months after 9/11.

“If you go back to 9/11, Rudy made the right decision in those days to run the marathon and pull people together,” Bloomberg said. He said the marathon’s organizers are “running this race to help New York City, and the donations from all the runners in the club will be a great help for our relief efforts.”

Giuliani said on Friday that holding the race is completely appropriate, even given the circumstances.

“It’s a great opportunity on Sunday morning for people to see New York City as the city that can handle something. We can do more than one thing at a time,” Giuliani said.

Always proud to be a Yankee fan.

the generators were provided by the racing association (or whatever it's called) and not the city so they're under no obligation to be used for anything else. That being said it would be a sign of good will to let the city use them.

It's about time. Idiotic to even think about having it with all the hardships people are going through. To even think about diverting any resources to handle the marathon was beyond stupid. This disaster wasn't isolated to one area like 9-11 was. Its spred throughtout the city , Long Island and New Jersey. What the hell was Bloomberg thinking?

Mike was just one of many moaning today about the decision to run the marathon, and rightly so.  Bloomberg's a **** just to entertain the idea after what just happened in NYC.  It's amazing to me how people vote for some of these hacks.

btw I think it's time that this thread be moved to the sport of politics. it's about three posts from the usual suspects from getting out of control. Also it has nothing to do with the yankees.

Clam yo'se'f, BRJ, clam yo'se'f.

Some of our friends got a smidgen outta han'.

It's a difficult time for everyone; and politics has both nothing and everything to do with it.

Everybody needs to pitch in and stop blaming each other's opinions.

sorry old man, not gonna clam myself. This thread has nothing to do with the yankees and since people decided to bring politics into it it should be moved to the political forum.
