Not defending Arod in any way. Just saying. Giving up steroids, etc. is alot more difficult than you think physically, psychologically and in every other way.

1. If you use steroids for a long period of time there can be a sort of physiological addiction or reaction within the body............mostly around the generation of cortisol, etc. Over time the body gets used to having this artificial stimulant and like anything else {they call it "yin and yang" in Asia} there are positive effects and deleterious effects.

2. Physically when you stop using anabolic steroids you feel weak because you do get "weaker." It isn't your imagination. It is like a balloon that has been blown up and blown up and blown up and now your helium has been taken away.......................and no. You can't just replace this by diet and working out harder. Sorry. Doesn't work that way. You can eat and sleep and work out 15 hours a day and so forth and so on but it doesn't replace anabolic steroids.

3. There is a tremendous psychological addiction or "obsession" and there is the physiological part as well. There is actually a sort of high or sense of well being that often accompanies steroid use. A sense of confidence and strength which translates into a persons daily life.

4. Most of the evidence in relation to anabolic steroids {as compared to say EPO for cyclists where you can show in a lab specifically the beneficial effect} has been empirical and not scientific. They still haven't been able to show specifically in a mathematical sense via scientific testing exactly how beneficial steroids are.....................but the empirical data {mostly from users themselves} is overwhelming.  Users of anabolic steroids will tell you it helps tremendously in their training, especially in recovery and in the ability to sustain longer and more intense training without injuring themselves. The retention of the strength and endurance gains as a result of longer more frequent and more intense training. 90% of athletes who've used anabolic steroids would tell you that their use benefited them tremendously............and then you can look at things like in baseball in a twenty year period the 50 home run mark was touched three times for one season in a twenty year time frame and at the height of the steroid era I think 7 guys hit 50 home runs in one year.

5. I remember when "they" said that Arod {I'm just picking on Arod because I'm familiar with his situation......this goes for all of them} had used with Texas but not afterward, I remember thinking. Hmmm. I'm not sure it is that easy to just be on and off anabolic steroids like they are vitamins or something. Instinctively that didn't make sense to me. I figured it was alot harder to simply give them up than people seemed to think.

6. I'm just curious. If I knew this {and I'm not a rocket scientist.} If I figured this out by simply being objective and not buying into "hype" then why didn't alot of other people many of whom are smarter than I am?.....................Why do you think we human beings "suspend belief" alot. We pretend that 2+2=5 or we don't want to know that 2+2=5?.............If I was the Yankees or the Red Sox or the Kansas City Royals or whomever. If I was going to give a player a 150 million dollar contract or a 200 million dollar contract or even a 100 million dollar contract I'd find out everything possible about that player. Everything. I'd be able to tell you who he dates, if he cheats on his girlfriend, how many times a week he goes out to a club, who he hangs with when he goes to a club, where he works out, who he gets his massages from, what medications he's on, who he "consorts" with in any way and who the people he "consorts" with "consort" with. I would be intrusive beyond belief. I'd know how many times a day the guy brushes his teeth {and if you're good at it I don't think this information is THAT difficult to come by.} I was a Social Worker for years. A big part of my job was finding out information about my clients and presenting it to the treatment team so we could make a determination as to the most appropriate method of treatment of going forward in their "case" or situation. I was pretty good at it....................I don't think it is really that hard when you have the resources of the Yankees or the Red Sox or the Phillies or certainly major league baseball to find out who is using steroids, who isn't, who is doing X,Y, and Z.  Many people would say, "oh, it is very hard to get that information." No it isn't. It isn't that hard at all. Believe me.

Very interesting and insightful post ... I especially wonder about #6 also ... I think you are onto something ... people inside baseball just didn't want to know what was going on.

Yes. I just don't think "information" per se is as difficult to come by {especially in this day an age} as people seem to think it is. If you put the resources and experienced people on any pro athlete I believe that after 3 or 4 weeks of intensive "research" they could tell you how many times the person made a right turn signal with their car during that time frame. I believe they could find out the most personal information including whether someone was using PED's or anything else.............of course in this country with the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution, and Lawyers and Agents and so forth and so on maybe what you could USE and the MEANS to getting that information would be severely "tested."
