Nothing moral about being racist or homophobic.

What's wrong with being homophobic?

It just seems odd that as a society we should legitimize a perversion. I'm not saying that gay people should be discriminated against, but, why should their behavior be glamorized and glorified?

I understand what you are saying but how does is this legalization impact society on the whole?

It literally changes the meaning of the word marriage ... when I married my husband it was a sacred vow between a man and a woman.  If gay people want to have a union it doesn't need to be called marriage ... it's not the same ... they are not a man and a woman ... they are the same sex ... should have its own terminology ... that's my only issue, the terminology.

ok, then we need to come up with another word...  how about instead of Marriage it's called Weirdage?  problem is that soon after liberal straight people will want to enter into Weirdage too....  it's an endless circle....

Civil Union works just fine ... just need to give those words the same assets and liabilities that belong to the word marriage ... then gay people can be just as happy and miserable as the rest of us. Smile

And what behavior would that be 61? My brother and his husband wake up,go to work, come home have dinner etc. One of my neighbors goes to work and spends the rest of the time caring for her wife of 40 years. Doesn't sound much different from straight couples to me.

As long as DOMA and other laws are still in place, people like the ones I just described ARE being discriminated against. As for the first part of your statement, thankfully that line of thinking is becoming less and less of an issue.

Gotta, they've tried that and well, seperate but equal has never worked before. Not to mention the fact that in many places where they've tried to pass Civil Unions, many people who claim they would been fine with that fight tooth and nail to make sure those don't happen either.

But the atmosphere has changed ... right now most people would be happy with Civil Unions having the same rights and responsibilities as a marriage ... just because something didn't work once, doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried again ... my feeling has always been that there should be a Constitutional Amendment that would be enforced in every State where a Civil Union would have all the same rights and responsibilities of a marriage ... these people shouldn't be forced to jump across different States just to have their Union recognized.  I don't want to hurt anyone ... but I also don't like what I did 30 years ago having extra meanings attached to it ... sorry, just the way I feel.

Gay marriage legitimizes the act of anal/oral intercourse between 2 men. Its a perversion and should not be glorified through "marriage". I don't want to know about it. I don't even want to think of my parents having intercourse much less the gay neighbors. Two married men simply doesn't compute.

That argument was tried during the Prop 8 lawsuit trial 61 and it failed miserably. Straight couples do it too so should their marriage rights be stripped away too?

Its not a perversion between straight couples. It is a perversion between gay couples.

Nobody wants your brother to be unhappy.

You hurt his cause by attempting to co-opt well established terms and redefine their meaning. If you said your brother and his partner want a civil union with all the rights guaranteed to married couples, you'd get little argument. Start throwing around words like "marriage" and "husband" and you'll meet resistance -- some of which is your own creation.

If the goal is your brother's equality and happiness, the terminology should be unimportant.

The terminology would be unimportant if seperate but equal actually worked. It doesn't and as it stand, most states don't acknowledge civil unions anyway.
