Well not to take anything away from Howe, who, I really didnt like..BUT.......he NEVER scored 50 goals in a season...that "50 club" when you mention alll time greats, well, you need to be in that club (I certainly figure him in the top 5--excluding goalies)...in fact, Howe scored as many as 40 goals I believe only 4 or 5 times..(Bobby Hull scored 50+ that many times)..thats a huge asterisk IMO for a guy who played as long as he did in the NHL....I dont count the WHA days b/c that was a diluted league talent wise when he got there as well as he was old. IMO, guys like Jagr, Lemieuz, Ovechkin would give him a real good run for his money if they played in the same era. Those guys are all big, very strong and fast, and wouldnt take any of Gordies shyt. Howe was decent sized when he played, even on the bigger side--- today, he'd be smaller than avg.

First of all Joe, in the Original six, it was a shorter season, second of all there were 6 teams, and all of them had Hall of Fame Goalies, along with the best all around hockey players of their time. You keep bring up guys like OV,  Jgar, Lemieux, and you could throw in guys like Cindy the Punk Crosby, even guys like the Great one along with great scorers like Mike Bossey, and throw in many of the 50 goals scorers of today if you want. But you fail to realize, in the days that Gordie never scored 50 goals, you took a beating to score a goal, and control the puck, they didn't blow the whistle when guys were mugged carrying the puck up ice, where there was no open ice, do you think guys like Crosby, and Lemieux, who hated to get hit, and would spend their entire career crying to the refs, when ever they got hit, could be as great as they were when they were playing, if they played in the days of the original six, where as I said you had to earn open ice, you had to pay the price to get open ice, you had to pay the price going to the net, or standing in the crease. As big as OV is, I don't think he could have handle those days,. These Euro players like him would get knocked all over the ice. They couldn't stand there like OV does, on the wing, with his stick up in a shooting position for a one timer like he does now, and no one can touch him, the stick would be put up his A$$. You make a lot of good points on the subject of hockey, and I respect you and your views, you know the game, and I enjoy talking hockey with you, but you have to realize, I have one big advantage over  you, all these guys now and then, I have seen play with my own eyes, and watched guys like Gordie play for his entire career, along with every player you have mentioned, and I will take Gordie over all of them. If Gordie could do what he did in those days, with completely different rules and penalties, against most of the best players in the world of hockey, and most are hall of fame hockey players today, when all 6 teams, didn't have a weak link on any line or defense, and goalie, can you imagine what he could do today. It's 2016 Joe, and they are still trying to break Gordie Howe's records.

Stick with me Joe, and you will learn what the real game of hockey  is all about LOL

You didn't mess with the likes of Gordie Howe

Well, lemme say this Tony.,...I'm MUCH older than you are giving me credit for....I saw Gordie play too....maybe not as many years as you but, I'm old enough for Bobby Hull to be my hockey idol...your assessment between the type of game years ago, as well as the original 6 has merit...I wil say this, todays players are bigger and faster and as far as whether or not they could "take it" years ago, I feel pretty safe in saying they could and would.  Now as far as using the game differences as an excuse for Gordie not scoring 50, I dunno I can agree with that. For one, Gordie was one of the guys DISHING it out, to guys standing in the crease. He was also one of the guys elbowing the shyt out of any D or wing trying to move him out of space in front of the net. So, he wasnt some young lil cub scout liek a Rod Gilbert who was getting beaten up by the big boys. Far from it. Also, Bobby Hull scored his 50s,(notice that PLURAL) playing in the same era as Gordie...He scored the 50s, Gordie never did..49 was closest...He also played games in the expansion era when he SHOULD have been able to notch 50 b/c of the weaker play....never did! So, I respect him, not in any way diminish his greatness...dont misunderstand me...I just think that when you talk about best of all time, there's other names that enter into the fray nowadays....One last thing, youre sounding like a Ranger fan when you "dis" guys like Crosby & Mario...cmon, youre better than that. Those are guys ANY Ranger fan would drool ever if they ever wound up in the Garden as Rangers.

Good to see some hockey talk even though some of you root for the wrong team!

Great names mentioned here but Gretzky truly is the Great One. He has almost 1,000 more career points than Messier who holds second place. Four, 200 plus point seasons. His numbers are surreal.

I think Gretzky, when asked, said Howe was the greatest ever.

At least we all agree that the shoot out sucks. So does 3 on 3 during OT.

Add to it...

Trapezoid for goalies

Increased space behind the net

No offsides pass

The increase in icing as a result

The lack of the D having to touch the puck on icings

...and the changes in game startegy that evolved b/c of all the above. I could go on til I puke....As a former Ranger fan, I have to LOL when I hear you guys yap,  as well as my friends....Youre in the same class as red sux and muets fans,....trash talk a lot, with NOTHING to back it up. I love it LMAO

I think Bettman feels he can increase NHL viewership with these incessant rules changes. I don't believe it has increased scoring like he hoped. The NHL has to stop screwing with the game. It invalidates the past achievements and all the records set over the years. No other major sport changes the rules as frequently and as drastically as the NHL.

Hockey will never be as popular as the 3 other main sports. Who cares. It's hard enough to get tickets to a Ranger game as it is. I can see why you jumped ship and became a fan of the Horned Ones. Tix are always available, even for PO games!

It frustrates the hell out of me Joe that the Rangers have won only one cup in 76 years. Last year was theirs and they blew it...again. But I'll root for these guys for as long as I inhale air and when that stops I'll still turn blue.

Joe When you say I sound like a Ranger Fan dissing guys like Mario and Lemieux, I don't know where you are coming from, but you sure sound like a Ranger Hater, now that  you are a Devils fans. But it doesn't bother me. I have the up most respect for all great hockey players, as a matter of fact, I admire most any player that plays in the NHL. Especially the players that played on the 4 time Stanley Cup Islanders, Oilers and Montreal. My point with Lemieux and the Punk Crosby, is valid, and I stand by it. Both are two of the best hockey players on their time, but I don't respect either because of the Cry Babies both of them were and Sidney still is, but he learned good from his tutor, Mario. You take a guy like OV, Messier, the Great one 99, and yes I loved Bobby Hull, and add him to many. They never took dives, and laid on the ice looking for the refs and begging for a penalty, that they would get on the next shift. They kept skating and playing until the whistle was blown, and then they would have their say, or just keep playing. If you are as old as you say you are, and been around that long, you have to have witnessed this, and know this about Crosby and Mario, it's a known fact. Doesn't me telling you my Idol as a hockey player was Gordie Howe, tell you something. And BTW, If I had to pick players I would want on my team, the first player on D, after Orr would be Scott Stevens. Like I said more then once, I love this game of  hockey more then any other sport in the world. But I am a die hard loyal Ranger Fan and I wouldn't change that for any other team, no matter where I moved to, IMO once a Ranger Fan, always a Ranger Fan. That's why I told you, there is no such thing as I once was a Ranger Fan. I admire guys like Bobby Hull aka the Golden Jet, and Stan the Man Mikita, and Glen Hull,. I can name many players on the Blackhawks without looking them up. I was at all the games in those days. Along with Hull, there was guys like Moose Vasko, the Balfour Brothers, Jack Evans, Ron Murphy, Pierre Pilote, St. Laurent. You want me to go on. If we saw each other in person, You could ask me to name players on any teams during the original six, then and now. So I am surprised you would relate my views to dising other players because I am a Ranger Fan. That makes me thing you are younger then you are, if you have been around as long as you say you are, and I don't doubt you, I expected you to see where I am coming from. But I still respect you Joe, just like I respect all players in the NHL, Fans of certain teams???????

But I love talking hockey Joe, and I do hope we meet up some day at a hockey game.

My best friend was a Ranger fan since the 50's. His brother would take him to the old Garden. He saw the 10 minute Eddie chant first-hand.

And now he's a Devils fan!

I just read that Nash might be asked to break his NTC. We need D. Girardi, Staal and Boyle are finished. Can we get Stralman back?

Not a Ranger hater at all bro...I just get sick of the trash talking and dissing that Ranger fans deal out whenever it comes to players or teams that have done what they havent---WIN STANLEY CUPS.  Listening to all the crying gets old too..So, I like seeing em lose so I can laigh at all the crying and beeahhtching you all do...LMAO...Gamesmanship always existed in hockey, and the players you mention arent the only ones who used it to their advantage including Howe. He was one of the WORST for pulling BS (most of it dirty) on players when the ref wasnt looking. Blame penalties that are acts rather than real on the refs, who fall for that shyt. I explained how I became a Devils fan and thats the way it is..I dont regret it for a second....If you were in my circumstansces or, one of your kids played for a differnt team than the Rangers, youd root like hell for that team. That said, I still love the Ranger teams and their players that I rooted for as a kid as much today as I did then. ...PS... about Scott Stevens, my wife and I were invited to the Devils black tie gala for their 15th anniversary in NJ....I was seated at Stevens' table. GREAT guy...Speaking of the Black Hawks---when I was in college we often played games in the Nassua Coliseum...Those games were on afternoons of Isles night games. Well, right at the buzzer between periods, I was robbed of a goal by a great save by the opposing goalie. As I skated off, a "fan" standing in the exit from the ice said "helluve a shot kid, that guy robbed you of one!!" The guy was Tony Espo....Wink

Just want to add one more thing about Gordie and the days of the orig 6. Unlike today with all the TV time outs, and team time outs, so guys can rest up in todays game, there was none of that in the orig. 6, the game was played without those rest times. A real mans game.

As I skated off, a "fan" standing in the exit from the ice said "helluve a shot kid, that guy robbed you of one!!" The guy was Tony Espo....

Thats a great story, and memory about Tony Espo Joe. Hockey players are special people in sports. Down to earth, real and sincere.

I remember when my son said he wanted to buy me an authentic Ranger Jersey for Xmas. He asked me what name do you want on it, I said if you are going to spent all that money it has to be someone who is a Ranger for ever. So I said number 7 Gilbert. First time I wore it, I was waitng for my son to meet me for a game at MSG, and was standing next to Cosby's leaning on a railing, and someone from behind taps me on my back, I turn around thinking it was my son, and Rod Gilbert says "Give Me a Hug"
