Well, let me start off by saying I have been a Ranger Fan, since the days I played street hockey as a kid in the NYC YMCA league, and during the days of the original 6 era. I use to get out of high school in Manhattan, around 2:30 PM, and run up to 49th street and 8th ave, to the old garden, to stand on line for the general admission seats at the old MSG with my School GO card, and wait till the Garden opened at 6:PM, and fight for the front row seats up stairs to watch the Rangers Play.

To me, there is no sport like the game of hockey where the athletes play for the love of the game.

IMO, the Ranger Fans, are the best and most loyal fans in all of hockey. That is why the rivalry between the Devil Fans, and mostly the Islander fans is so intense. Islanders accomplished one of the great stories in hockey, winning 4 cups in a row. And the reason Ranger Fans hate Islander fans (all 8 of them), is because they never deserved a team like that, Ranger Fans did. They were not hockey fans, they were people on Long Island that realized they had a hockey team in first place, and they all jumped on the band wagon, and they wouldn't have known the difference between a Blue Line and a Clothes Line. Right now they are in the 2nd round of the playoffs after many years, and you see all these fly by night Islander fans with their brand new Jersey's and Hats, with the price tags still on them. That's so, when, and if the Islanders get knocked out, they can go to Modell's or Dicks Sporting Goods and return them.

Now to get back to this season, and the state of this Ranger Team, first let me say, even at the beginning of the season, when the Rangers were on their straight win streak, I noticed and said, this team is not playing good hockey and if it wasn't for Lundqvist they would not be in the top 3 in their division. I have always said, during the days of the 1940 chants, if the Rangers want to win the Cup, they need a kick A$$ Coach, because this is NYC, and you need a hard nose kick A$$ coach, and a leader on the ice. When they got Messier, and then Iron Mike behind the bench, they had the best leader in the history of the Rangers on the ice, and the best leader on the bench. Something they did not have this season. This Ranger team lacked leadership on the ice, and on the bench. They were too soft, and in the first round of the playoffs, they had no heart, no grit, no leadership, no pride, and no intensity at all. How do you allow a guy like Letang swing his stick, knock 3 teeth out of Stallberg, laying on the ice, and no one did nothing about it. You are losing the game by 4 goals, the game was over, drop the gloves and sent him and the Penguins a message for the next game. It never happen.

I like AV, but he needs to learn to make players accountable, and he needs to show some emotions on the bench. You have a 40 goal scorer on your team Rick Nash, he scored 42 goals last season, was a plus 29 on the ice, playing with Brassard, and Zuc, and AV, splits them up the next season, and uses Rick Nash more on Penalty killing then on the Power Play. Ridiculous.

You have young guys like Kreider and Hayes, who should be big power forwards, and you have to make sure they tow the line, on the ice, and off the ice in NYC. I heard many rumors about Kreider beilng a party boy in Mahattan.

Rangers need to do what ever they can to keep Yendal. They cannot afford to lost this guy. I am not happy with McD as the Capt., I thing the "C" is too heavy for him. McILrath, can learn to play like a big time Buckaboom, something missing on the Ranger D for some time. But AV, like he did with Vancouver, loves to play the Vets over youth. That's what got him fired. Rangers have a good solid back up for Lundqvist. I had no problem with them letting Talbot go, for draft picks. He did a great job as back up, but when it comes to a number one, he still has to prove himself. Oilers didn't even make the playoffs this season.

And yes the Rangers can use a John Tavarse type player, but they are number 1 over all picks in the draft. Rangers in their history, have never had the number 1 over all pick in the draft, and that's because they never finished last, ever in their history.

I don't think the Rangers will get rid of AV this season, he has 1 more yr on his contract, and there is a new GM, so lets see what he does to make this team better. They have a lot of good young players coming up, and yes that Russian Kid is one of them.

Right now, in hockey, of course you have to say the Islanders are the best in NYC. (Screw  Em)

Remember this Ranger and Hockey Fans in NYC, Islanders won 4 Cups in a Row, and they had about 100 thousand fly by night fans standing on Hempstead Turnpike with Sparklers in their hands.

Devils won the Cup on a Saturday Night, and had a parade in the parking lot with the Seagulls in the Meadowlands and the next day no one gave a $hit.

Rangers won the cup in 94, and they are still talking about it. They had a parade down the Canyon of Heroes and 2 million Ranger Fans showed up, Even though there was a Long Island Rail Road Strike going on.

When it comes to Hockey in NYC, there is only one team, and one set of Fans, and that's The New York Rangers.

LETS GO RANGERS.

Yea they have a superstar in Tavares. Tough team. Wish the Rangers had a player like Martin.

I like Henrik but it hamstrings the team having that much money tied up in a goalie. As we see in the playoffs you can get a nobody goalie and win. It's more important whats in front of them. Staal and Girardis contracts probably kill them to.

You know more about this then me Joe with the cap and age on this team but I think they need to reboot. I like Yandel. Hope they can keep him. They have to hope Krieder turns into a star. To much talent to not be patient. Zuccarella should stay. Love his game. After that not sure who should be off the table. McDonough seems to be turning into that injury prone player.

After that I'm not sure who they can move and what they can bring in but this team needs changes. Penguins talent is on a different level. Caps to.

Hated to see them just give Hagelin away. Talbot to.

Do you know if the 20 year old Russian is anything to get pumped about?.

Sorry Joe I just read your a Devs fan. Probably still know more then me.

Hustle or Tony can probably give good answers.

As i said in other thread, their D is slow and sloppy. As good as Henrik is, IMO, in Rangers history, he's def behind MIke Richter, and MAYBE, behind Eddie. Eddie played in a 6 team, and fisrt expansion era, and IMO,the talent was very concentrated on fewer teams. MIKe R won a cup...maybe soem of the best goaltending Ive seen in a series. If not for Richter, the Rangers nver get past NJ, despite Messiers 'guarantee'.  I could go on forever on hocky but, with the rules changes over the years, (most bad imo) teams with crisp passing, speed, size, and disciplined position wise, will succed. Rangers in dexline IMO for going all in on Nash.  They thgt he was the answer....we now know better!

I don't agree with you on this Joe. Richter, Eddie and Lundqvist are all up there as top goalies for the Rangers and there is an argument for all 3 of them. Very hard to compare them.

First Eddie, was a complete different era, and the game was completely different.

Richter had a much better team and defense playing in front of him, and the rules were not the same as today, along with the goalie equipment.

Lundqvist, is a franchise player in goal, and you can almost compare him to the NY Knicks when they had a great franchise player, Patrick Ewing, and they just could not put all the pieces together to compliment him and build a championship team, both came close but never got to win it all. And right now that is the problem with Lundqvist, he like Ewing in those days, is getting older, and time wears you down in a physical sport. But Lundqvist was and still is a top notch goalie in the NHL, and like all great players time is catching up on him. If I had to pick one of them, I would go with Lundqvist, but you can make an argument for all 3 of them, but you have to look at the overall picture.

And like your views on Mike R, you can say the same for Lundqvist, the past 5 season, without Lundqvist, they would have never gone as far this year, or the past two season under AV and with Torts when the won the Presidents Trophy, without Lundqvist in the nets. Rangers would have never made the playoffs this season without Lundqvist in the nets. He won more games in the nets. And there were times the Rangers won games, because Lundqvist was the only guy on the ice to show up for the Rangers.

And lets not forget, all the games that Lundqvist won in shoot outs, when the Rangers were lucky to even get there. But many games they played for the tie, because they knew Lundqvist would win it in a shoot out. He was one of the best one on one.

Mike R won a cup....means alot...AND, for all your praise of Lund, he's still eons below the best that ever lived in this area..or in the history of the NHL for that matter.....marTAN,...I'd even go as far as saying he cant hold Billy Smiths jock either.  Despite your harsh words about the Isles (THEY DESERVED EVERY CUP THEY WON...you KIDDING?) they are the only true hockey dynasty this areas EVER seen. Easily rank up there with the great dynasties of ALL TIME! For the last 40 years, THE hockey teams of this area (in terms of results) have been the Isles and Devs Tony...like it or not.

PS....as far as "shoot outs"....worst thing NHL ever did...3 point games are a joke.

Joe, you are not even reading what I said about the Islanders, I had no harsh words for the Islanders team, just their fans. I admire what the team did, and said that their phony fans didn't deserve a team like that, and I explained why. And I will tell you more about their fans. First of all when the Islanders came into the NHL, you could go to any game, any time and the pick any seat in the house. They had no fans, the place was empty. But when they were on their way to winning their first cup, these phony fly by night fans who didn't know $het from shine ola about hockey came out of the woodwork, for 4 years, after they stop winning and were not in the hunt for another Cup, the only time they sold out was when they played the Rangers, and that's because there were more Ranger Fans then Islander fans. And I will give you another example. When they were going to retire Denis Potions Jersey the Islander players, Nostrum, Gilles, Butch Goring were at the Hicksville LIRR Station giving out free tickets to the game, so they could get a full house to come, at that time the Islanders weren't even in the playoff run. Well I took a ticket and went, and there was about 5,000 other people there. Where the heck was those die hard phony fans when they were winning 4 cups.

And I will go one better Joe. I use to take the LIRR to work in those early days of the Islanders, and their was these 2 loud mouth Islander Fans, that I would argue with, and they said they were die hard Hockey and Islander Fans. Well in 75 when JP Parise scored that great OT goal to beat the Rangers and knock them out of the playoffs. Well the next day, those 2 guys, one who was Italian, came on the train, looking for me and he had and Italian Flag. I said what the h ell is that flag for? He is screaming and waving the flag in my face and yelling J P Parise. I said you dumb SOB, the guy is not Italian, he is French Canadian, and can't even speak English, he speaks French.

And as far as Billy Smith goes, there isn't a goalie in the NHL today that couldn't win 4 Cups in a row with the team the Islanders had, and as good as Smith was, he couldn't even lace Lundqvist Skates. You want to talk about great Hall of Fame Goalies, you need to talk about Toronto's Johnny Bower, or Montreals Jacques Plante, I love this game of hockey and watched some of the greats play this game, including the best over all player to ever play that game, The Great Mr. Hockey himself Gordie Howe, no one better then him. And that includes 99. It's 2016 and they are still trying to break Gordie Howes Records.Gordie Howe was 50 yrs old playing for the Hartford Whalers and scored close to 30 goals.

And trash talking Lundqvist as being over rated, is typical of a Devil Fan. LOL Just like I would say, Marty, aka Fatso, was the most over rated goalie in the NHL.

Now go home and get your f ing shine box Joe. LMAO.

Hey Tony.

I didn't like Billy Smith but he was a great clutch goalie. I never saw a goalie have a better Stanley Cup then he had in that last Cup win against the young Oilers. The Oilers totally outplayed the Islanders that series. They were flying all over the place and the main reason the Islanders won was because of Smith. He was unreal that series. The start of the Oilers dynasty who blew them away the next year.

I remember that JP Parise goal to. I was in shock they knocked off the Rangers.

I started watching the Rangers in the early 70's. It was a different game then. So much faster now. I thought Eddie was great and remember that home coming game. I think all 3 were real good but winning a Cup is huge. Tough call.

Well JoeG and Yankko, no matter who one may root for in hockey, its just great to talk hockey. Like I said, I go back to the days of the orig. 6 when hockey was played the way it was meant to be, not like today with these garbage shoot outs, and these 3 on 3 OT in the regular season. Hockey has always been, and IMO, will always be a team sport, and not a sport that games were to be decided by individuals. After a hard fought 60 min game the games were not designed to be won by an individual, it was played to be won or lost by a team.

The way this game was supposed to be played in the regular season, at the end of 60 min, if the game is tied, you should play 1 full sudden death OT, and if at the end of the period the game is still tied, both teams get a point. If a team scores in sudden death, that team gets 2 pts,, and the other team gets nothing. Why should a team that loses a game be rewarded with a point.?

The game is much faster today, because the game is played like, you can't touch me I am sterile. They did away with the 2 line pass and the red line, so guys get a full head of steam. You can't go near a goalie, you can't go near the crease. It the great game of hockey during the orig. 6, you wanted open ice, you had to earn it and pay the price, You wanted to stand in the crease you had to pay the price, the goalie came out to play the puck, he paid the price. This is not the hockey I grew up  playing and loving.

They think they are trying to get more fans, When it comes to hockey in the USA,  there is no in between, you are either fanatic, like I am, or you can give 2 $hets about the game of hockey.

Oh Joe, I can name many more goalies, like Glen Hall, Terry Shawchuk, Bernie Parent, old time hockey and Ranger Fans like myself, what we forgot, you younger guys, especially you Devils fans, you have to learn. LOL.

And while we are on goalies again, as you know Joe, I was brought up in Astoria Queens, and the goalie on my team was Sal Messina, aka, Sal Red Light Messina. Who was the house goalie for the NY Rangers, and if  you or Yankko are too young to remember what a house goalie is, I will tell  you. In the days of the orig. 6, each team was only allowed to have 1 goalie on the team, and every team had to supply a house goalie when you were on home ice, he would sit in the stands dressed to play, if any of the goalies on either team got hurt and could not continue. The original house goalie at MSG was Schafer, then Sal took over. No team wanted to use a house goalie, I can remeber games when Chuck Rainer was the goalie for the NY Rangers, and in those days they wore no mask, Well he got hit in the face with a puck and needed stitches, they would stictch him up in the net, so the house goalie wouldn't come in.

And BTW, this old time Ranger Fan, had season tickets from the 50's and gave em up in 1996, but I was there in 94 to see the Rangers win the cup. And I still go to games. And I never miss a Ranger Game. Now if being a die hard hockey and Ranger Fan, makes me a loser, I am proud of it, and consider my self the best loser in hockey. Now as far as you and the SwampRats and their fans, like I said, they won the cup on a Saturday Night, and Sunday Morning, no one gave a $het. So Let it Be written, So Let it be Done.

Tough call.

The games faster today Yank for a variety of reasons,,,,players? Yes......rules? BY ALL MEANS! getting rid if the red line for off sides passes sped the game up and also slowed it down timewise due to the increase in icings,,,,,,,youre 1000000% rifht about Billy Smith.  Tony.....Old time Ranger fans are to NY hockey what Mets fans are to NY baseball......LOSERS! Lmao ....and in your zeal to dis Marty, the best of all time, you fail to mention, Roy, Hasek, Dreyden, Espo and a host of other greats.

Dude dude dude.....im way way older than you think bro....and as far as forgeting more than all us 'younger guys', that just made me LMAO....roller hockey?  Sure its ok....when you can play on REAL skates, on ice that is, then you can talk to me about what 'real hockey' is.....i have to admit, my finest college memory was the day i played in MSG for the first time...( i was a Rnager fan then) it.was also pretty kewl playing in the LI Coliseum which was always, on afternoons b4 Isles night games. Got to meeet some greats from both the Isles and their opponents...Enjoy golf til Oct. Wink

Joe my friend, I am sure you know I was adding some humor to our debate, no. disrespect meant. I wish I had the chance to play hockey in college, like you. But I had to go to work in my days. But don't think for one minute I didn't lace em up and play some ice hockey. We had a tough time getting ice time, but we found the time. BTW, what team did your team the Devils play in the first round? Oh so sorry Joe the Devils didn't make the playoffs this season. Guess you beat me to the golf course. And one more thing Joe you said when you were a Ranger Fan ? What, when you were a Ranger Fan? No such thing as when I was a Ranger Fan, once a Ranger Fan, always a Ranger Fan. BTW,I still have my Bauer Ice Skates, and my Northland Hockey Stick. Stay well my friend.
LETS GO RANGERS

Ok.  So, this is how i became a Devils fan. IT was impossible to get Rangers tix....so one day iwas picking up some concert tix at the Meadowlands arena and took a Devs schedule. MY thought was, Id get tix in NJ when my teams including the Rangers played there. I wound up splitting seasons tix with my sectys hubby. At almost the same time, the Devils became my client. Long story short, when you see a team on a season ticket basis, and theyre your client, you become a fan. I have been ever since. My skates were/are Bauers too. In HS inused Northland sticks. IN fact, I used to go to Gerry Cosbys in NYC and Id buy all of Arnie Browns rejects. HIs curve and lie were exactly what i liked. IN college, when i could order what i wanted, i switched to Kohos.
