Mariani Rivera NEVER blew a 3 run lead in the 9th.

This was clearly on Betances.

You can say April this or Miller that, but the fact is, they are where they are and they need to win every game.  Betances doesn't look like a closer to me.  He excelled in the setup roll.  Real closers are a rare breed.  It may still remain to be seen, but he doesn't seem to have the consistency or the makeup of a closer.

I have to believe Chapman will be back next year, unless he wins the WS where he is, and they give him a ridiculous sum of money and years.  Which, is quite possible.

That said, can you blame Girardi?  Not sure how.... they stranded a bunch of runners with 0 or 1 out and runners in scoring position (including 3b).  Maybe you switch things up and run out Clippard, but how was he supposed to know that?

Agreed, not Girardi's fault. Betances is the closer and if they are going to be successful he will have to save games. If you pull him last night, you send the message that he can't cut it.

I know everyone thinks Chapman will be back next year and I hope he is but it's clearly not a done deal. He said he liked his time in NY but that is a far cry from signing a contract, especially when your services will be in demand for a half dozen teams or so. I could see the Cubs,  Tigers, Giants and Red Sox being big players. And don't forget we have an owner reluctant to spend money.

To be honest, I don't care what message that sends.  Get the win.  Let the kid pull himself up by the bootstraps and "man up".  Otherwise, get the win.  The players need to realize it's about the team, not being coddled.  -Not necessarily saying he was coddled... but it's a team effort.

Was Severino unavailable last night?? I think he would be a better closer than Betances.

Severino's value as middle relief has been priceless.  I wouldn't mess with him right now, especially since he's still quite young and the goal is to make him a starter.

Always go with the simplest fix... If necessary, move Clippard to closer and Betances to setup.  This is not the time to reinvent the wheel.

Girardi took his ACE out with 92 pitches UP FOUR!!. They could have used Warren for the 9th. Tanaka owned them all night. Betances has been worked like a dog all year.. it's amazing this guy who used to catch burns out every single one of his top relievers year in and year out.

So, you're saying Betances has been worked like a dog, but you want to work Tanaka, whose elbow is hanging by a thread, like a dog??? You have no clue how Tanaka felt, and Girardi said in the post game, he admittedly was out of gas. He leaves him in and he implodes and you would be second guessing that decision too.

Hev to agree with Bronxzoo. This was 100% Girardi not being a good manager throughout the game. Getting too cute. 3rd day in a row with Betances, who also blowed v the Dodgers. Girardi, didn't blow the Dodger game. But blew this game. Tanaka, could easily have stayed in for the 8th, he put on a clinic, and Warren the 9th. Backed up by either Layne or Blake, if Warren had got into trouble in the 9th.

Giradi, blew it by himself. Not the 1B blue who missed the checked swing on Ramirez.  This really sucks, probably end of Wild Card and division hopes right here.

The Managers fault today, not the team..

Right, Girardi himself left 10 men on base and prevented having at least a 9-2 lead going into the 9th. Gotcha!

Who ever decided Betances is a "curveball/off speed pitcher is to blame. Whether it be Girardi, Sanchez, Betances, whoever.  He is a fastball pitcher that should use the curve as a strike out pitch. If I remeber correctly at least the last 2 blown saves were because he threw 90 % breaking balls (mostly for balls) When he was good, he threw fastballs, got ahead and finished with more speed or a big 12 to 6 curveball.
