Clearance from MRI exam.....Bird is good to go for Wednesday with Archer on the mound

Greg Bird likely dodged another injury bullet

Greg Bird was held out of a second straight game on Tuesday after receiving an MRI exam on his ailing back, but the first baseman said he felt improvement and expected to be able to play on Wednesday.

“I think I’ll be ready to go,” Bird said before the Yankees lost 2-1 to the Rays at Citi Field. “I feel a lot better.”

According to manager Joe Girardi and Bird the MRI exam showed no structural damage and they were encouraged by how the symptoms subsided from Monday when Bird was scratched.

Bird said the discomfort was between his lower and middle back which began Sunday, when he went 0-for-5.

Following Monday’s game, Bird said he would need “a few days off,” but was more optimistic on Tuesday.

“As the day has progressed, I’ve been better,’’ said Bird, who also received treatment on Tuesday. “I was just frustrated [Monday] night, I think.”

“He feels better today, so I think that’s a pretty good sign,” Girardi said.

Bird has been plagued by injury woes for much of his major league career. He underwent season-ending shoulder surgery last year and was sidelined from May 2 to Aug. 16 this season with a bone bruise in his right ankle.

In 14 games since returning from surgery to remove a bone in the ankle, Bird is just 9-for-42 (.214) with two homers. He likely would have sat against Tampa Bay lefty Blake Snell on Tuesday, but right-hander Chris Archer will start on Wednesday.

Girardi didn’t have Didi Gregorius in the lineup Tuesday night but there wasn’t anything physically wrong with the Yankees’ best all-around player.

“If I am going to give Didi a day off it’s going to be against the left-handers,’’ Girardi said of the shortstop who started the previous 26 games at the position.

Gregorius was replaced by Ronald Torreyes and took a seat batting .421 (8-for-19) in the last five games.

Gregorius grounded out for Torreyes in the seventh and remained in the game.

Brett Gardner and Rays second baseman Danny Espinosa exchanged words during Monday night’s game when Gardner was thrown out attempting to steal second base in the eighth inning of the Yankees’ 5-1 victory.

“I asked him why he was blocking the base,’’ Gardner said before the game. “He said he wasn’t blocking the base.’’

Gardner then said that Espinosa had a foot placed in front of the bag leaving him no place to touch the base with either hand on a head-first slide.

MLB rules prohibit players from blocking bases and home plate if they don’t have the ball.

Always proud to be a Yankee fan.

Yes, he dodged a bullet but seems to have a lot of nagging injuries that keep him off the field.. I don't like that, his tolerance of pain must be pretty low.. If he's going to be our future, he needs to stay on the field..

Losing a full spring training often causes problems both physically and in production through the whole season, even for veterans.  I'd say that his fragility has pretty much guaranteed that we keep Headley this winter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't we still have Garrett Cooper? That kid can hit! Who says our first baseman has to be a lefty? I say platoon him with Headley at first, and we'll be fine!

We need a lefty bat.  Cooper isn't a MLB player.
