  • C Anthony Seigler, this year’s first round pick, has not played since July 4th UPDATE: Norris says Seigler has a minor hamstring issue. So there you go.
  • C Josh Breaux, this year’s second round pick, is injured, however. He’s been out since July 11th with a minor hamstring injury and is day-to-day. Breaux’s not even on the disabled list.

Justus Sheffield lone Yankees prospect on Keith Law’s midseason top 50

Earlier today, Keith Law released his midseason top 50 prospects list. Curiously enough, only one member of the Yankees’ farm system cracked the list. Justus Sheffield, the club’s top pitching project, ranked number 12.

Law talks up Sheffield’s velocity and plus slider, as demonstrated at last weekend’s Futures Game. He’s skeptical of the southpaw’s changeup usage and offered remarks on his generally poor command. Still, he gives the Yankees’ top minor league arm a positive outlook. “He’s very close to major league-ready, however,” Law writes, “and has all the elements of a future No. 2 starter.”

The 22-year-old has pitched to a 2.53 ERA (3.13 FIP) in 57 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. He also had a brief stint with the Trenton Thunder, where he pitched well. Sheffield has done a fine job of racking up strikeouts and preventing home runs. The Yankees reportedly made him off limits during the Manny Machado trade discussions.

In a way this isn’t surprising. Heading into the season, only Gleyber Torres and Sheffield cracked Law’s top 50. Estevan Florial never made his top 100, and an injury hampered 2018 would not do much to help his cause. Both Freicer Perez or Albert Abreu landed on the back-half of the top 100 list back in January, but both pitchers have struggled with injuries this season.

Josh Norris (no subs. req’d) has a good write-up on RHP Yoendrys Gomez, who the Yankees signed for $50,000 two years ago. Here’s video of his most recent start. “Two scouts in attendance came away impressed with Gomez, particularly with the feel for his secondaries and the overall ingredients for someone just starting his path up the ladder,” said the write-up.

Ezequiel Duran was impressive in spring training, he has struggled with Pulaski though. But he is making progress in his development.

  • 1B Brandon Wagner has been promoted from High-A Tampa to Double-A Trenton. Wagner hit .270/.376/.510 (154 wRC+) with a farm system leading 20 homers in 87 games for Tampa. Nearly 5,000 players have played in the minors this season and only 18 have more homers than Wagner. Thirteen of the 18 are older than him.
  • C Keith Skinner has voluntarily retired. He was the team’s seventh round pick in 2016. Skinner hit .218/.298/.267 (68 wRC+) in 72 career minor league games.

  • RHP Roansy Contreras and RHP Luis Gil have entered MLB.com’s top 30 Yankees prospects now that RHP Dillon Tate and RHP Cody Carroll have been traded away. Exciting write-ups for both. “Contreras’ fastball velocity has increased from 89-93 mph when he turned pro to 93-97 mph this season,” and Gil is “regularly working at 95-98 mph with his fastball and topping out at 101.” Huh.
  • The Yankees have released OF Terrance Robertson, reports Matt Eddy. The Yankees gave him an overslot $170,000 bonus as their 12th round pick in 2015. Robertson hit .212/.331/.266 (87 wRC+) with no homers and 28 steals in 42 attempts in 130 career games, none above rookie ball.
