Yanks have to tell him he will get the opportunity to hit and pitch, bottom line. if they are in the middle, he will not sign with them.

Yeah I forgot about that. That pretty much rules out every NL team too. We have an empty DH spot so it shouldn't be too tough to give him what he wants.

He has played the OF in Japan. While I havent seen a whole game of him playing the OF, according to stats he only has 4 errors in his lifetime playing the OF in the 4 years of pro ball in Japan.

It's essentially up to Otani where he signs. Several teams will post the $20 Million for a chance to negotiate with him. The only other teams that I would have worried about would have been the Dodgers but they only have $300,000 to offer, same for the Astros. NY should be an easy choice for Otani. Tanaka is here, it's the biggest stage, we went deep into the playoffs andhave a good core of young talent. He'd be nuts to go anywhere else.

Yea glad the Dodgers are out of it. It seems this kid wants the big stage. He could have waited and got a bigger payday. Now we could be wrong but it's no comparrison between the Yanks and Rangers. If he wants the big stage there is none bigger then here. With all the good young players, 2nd most money available, no full time DH, Matsui and Tanaka to recruit him the Yanks should get him. Hoping this happens. Scouts love him.

Yeah I hope so- he's on top of my very short want list. Mike Minor is the other guy I want. The rest of the openings can be filled from within.

Yank, do you really believe the Yanks willlet him pitch AND play the outfield or DH? I might be wrong but I don't see it. Throw 80 pitches on pitch day then go deep in the corner in left to make a throw to 2nd the next or even 2 days later. I'd be surprised but I've been surprised before I guess

I think they'll let him DH. If we had a large contract hanging around that needed the DH spot free I could see them passing on him, but since we don't have a DH right now it's a good fit if the kid can hit.

As they say, it only takes one.  I do believe there is at least one, possibly 2 or 3 that would let him do both, though I also think it is more likely to be a team that needs to put fannies in the seats and his novelty willl do that, at least at first and so long as he does both reasonably well.

He comes dirt cheap so not much financial risk.   If they were looking at a Tanaka type contract, yeh, probably no way they risk it if they think he is a pitcher first.

I think they do New . If they feel he can do both well I see it. I think the Yanks have to give him the option to sign him.I think its a huge draw also, what better team then the Yanks to have the Japanese Babe Ruth.. He wont cost much so it's not like they are paying him 20 mil per and have to worry about this huge investment.. I don't think he plays the field, just DH and probably just against some righties. It wont be everyday . When he pitches he wont hit, other days they will use other DH's. If he doesnt do well at both then they can go to what he's best at. From the scouting reports he's an athlete , he can run so it's not like he's another Wong getting hurt on the bases.
