He has a “partial strain“ on his UCL. Tanaka has a partial tear. Both could eventually lead to TJ surgery according to reports. Still, they paid the guy practically nothing to get him. i Would think teams would still line up. Makes you wonder though if teams would of been willing to give him the big contract if he was presented as a free agent, rather then having restrictions.

It is not so much an issue of what they paid him - meaning Ohtani.  Rather they have to pay some huge commission to the Japanese baseball organization - something like 20 mil - to get a player from them.  Given the salaries and or commissions these teams play, I am surprised they do not require an MRI as a requirement of the deal - sort of like the way companies require pre-employment physicals.  MRIs are ridiculously expensive and no one in "normal life" would ever order one for this purpose but they are non-invasive and without radiation exposure.  That being the case, I suspect money talks.

According to reports, the scan that revealed the issue was given to teams who where in contention. The scan that came up with it was actually given to him in Japan. So teams where willing to give the 20 million regardless.

Hiw could an unknown and untried individual possibly be worth 20 million?  It seems incredible to me.

Because he's not unknown, and 20 mil in baseball is the equivalent to 2 nickels on the ground

Really? I'll gladly take those two nickel equivalent...

As long as we are talking about 20 mil being no big deal in baseball, I am curious about something.  Where does all this money in baseball get made?  Is it the ticket sales?  The TV rights?  What?  For sure the post season games are sold out and, then, for big bucks but during the regular season, it looks to me like there are a whole lot of empty seats in the various stadiums.  I am guessing the cable companies pay big bucks for the license to broadcast the games and we, in turn, pay high cable fees.  Where does all this money in baseball come from?
